Potluck post

Well I hate too many postings it just seems messy and I am a neat freak. So too much to think about I will just throw it all in one post.

First thanks to Brian, OC BL and Darth Prather for coming out last night as well as Trae and Leonard as they geared up for their showdown in the early AM tomorrow. Marc was the man of the night as he came back from 7-5 to beat Brian and then get revenge on Prather. We did have a warm up set where he had to carry me in doubles and we lost 5-7 to Brian and David. I took the big zero on the night but happy to report my knee is back in action and I am ready to play some more tennis. That means you Sisk!

We might need beer next time, for Marc especially he has too much energy and we need to slow him down.

Tyler starts tomorrow, the biggest winner so far is DEFAULT who keeps taking out people with double bagels. It should open up the draw for some new faces to do well so it should be interesting. Good luck to all of you heading to East TX.

4.0 wraps up this weekend with some spots to be decided, some good matchups are taking place and I do think their will be an upset or two.

3.5 is a little boring this weekend but those are the weeks when someone can slip up and drop into the QT or worse out of the playoffs entirely but don't see any trap matches like that.

4.5 is all but decided except for positioning but the difference between 2nd and 3rd means one less match to go the DCC so that is a big deal.

And finally Anonymous posting won the vote and will stick around. I know some of you get worked up but I generally ignore idiots but like having them around, they are fun. And who knows everyone once in a while that idiot might be me. To the person who said that everyone should post bad things about me until I take off the anonymous posting remember I am celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary this July 4th, I doubt you can insult me more on a computer than I have dealt with over the past decade of marriage. (oops, please don't tell her I said that.)

  2. Cary,
Congrats on 10 years!! You do a great job running the blog. I've been out of the blog scene but I caught up recently and it was quite entertaining. Good luck to everyone as we approach the playoffs and what is up with the 4.0 format??

  3. Are you sure u are old enough to have been married 10 years? I can't believe you got married at such a young age, and their wasnt a shotgun in your back.

Seriously, congrats though. That was fun.

  5. Icepick,
Level 4.0 City Championship is horrible _ no round robin. Most teams will only play 2 matches. Also this won't work out well if the top two teams are placed in the same bracket. I know a couple guys that called the DTA to complain, but the DTA just blew them off _ as usual.

  6. yep I think that will be the most interesting thing to come out of the weekend to see out of the big 3 at 4.0 (Spk, HP and Lakes) who will get the flight by themselves. I think HP and Lakes can handle a tough flight better than Springpark because of their depth. So I am thinking they will be going for a 5-0 sweep of Brookhaven this weekend. Sorry Burt hear comes a smackdown, will we see Gene and Mitch or will they watch on TV at home.

  7. you can talk about my mom but not my backhand. ARGH!

  8. Who needs depth when you only have 2 matches that count and they might not even be the same day. Will it help HP that they have 8-10 good players who might not get to play? Pick the team with the best 4 players and you will pick the winner.

  9. very true this format does kind of work against having a "deep" team, that won't come into play until Sectionals.

yet another reason not to like this format.

  10. what is up with the usta tourney site, no results for tyler yet

  11. Round robin would really be fun because you have the opportunity to play all the top teams. I think the three teams everyone mentions, HP, SP and the Lakes are very close in talent and on any given day one can beat the other depending on matchups. Win or lose, it's a blast to play the other top teams and players. Last year, I had the opportunity to be destroyed by Jason Kern in the sectional finals. Great guy and player that taught me how far I am from playing at the 4.5 level. Maybe I take another beatdown this year but it only makes you better in the long run. See you all on the courts

  12. Most of the tournaments don't update throughout the day. They will probably update early in the morning each day of the tourney. I know Jason Warren is playing Chris Leach in the main draw tomorrow morning. Other than that, I don't know. I think Dustin may have beaten Griggs.

  13. Re: Trae v Leonard 4.0

It's kinda Bullshit that you have to play a 8am three set match then play the #1 seed at 11am who got a bye.

Hope you guy do well in the dubs to make your trip worth wild.

I'm still having a hard time seeing where these Major Zones are fun.

  14. That's partly why I've stopped playing. They were more fun when I was the seeded player.

  15. Playing doubles is fun. I don't see why anyone would want to play 5 or 6 singles matches in this heat.

  16. Cary,

  17. I think you're right Keith. You don't have to start until the afternoon, you aren't killing yourself physically, and you have somebody to share in the glory or misery after.

  18. I frankly love the fact you have someone to blame all your losses on. It couldn't ever possibly be my fault when we lose.

I have to agree from my one and only real tournament of the year, I enjoyed the 4 doubles matches a hell of alot more than the 7 singles matches.

  19. I guess I should hop on the Tuyen bandwagon. Good win over Trae. I thought that would be a good match up for him, oh well.

Curious to see how the next round goes for Nguyen since his opponent took out Matt Ellis pretty easily.

What about Feuille and Blumberg just about dropping double bagels on their first rd opponents, that should be a great match tomorrow.

    Sisk,
the odds of my driving 45 miles to the hood to play are slim. But email me and we will figure out a day/time/place that works for everyone. Although beating you in the GTC might be very satisfying.

  20. All my 'final four' singles players are still alive in the round of 16! Man, if this was a NCAA pool I'd be counting the money :). I'm sure I'll be crying in my cheerios after they post the results today.
Icepick, you can certainly compete in 4.5 as there is not a huge jump from top 4.0 to average 4.5. However, as there is in every division, there is a HUGE difference from top 4.0 to top 4.5. It's a ton of fun playing 4.5 and I'm sure you'll enjoy it next year but it is a lot of work to compete.
As far as being BS to have to play a 3 setter and then the number 1 seed, that's why you get seeded. It's a huge reward and more a function of how many tournaments you're willing to travel to (see Ratana racking up defaults and points... just kidding...kinda) and that all important 'luck of the draw' you all want in Dallas :). Tuyen is a quality 4.0 but nothing like what will be at Sectionals so its not a terrible draw. I'm sure Trae would have rather played Tuyen than Forest.
To me all these factors are what make playing the tournaments fun and challenging, you never know what is going to happen over a three day period. Unless of course you can predict the final four like me. Ok I've got my comments in before my picks fall apart. Enjoy your weekends.

  21. Blumberg defeats Forrest in 3. 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

  22. very true, I don't see Tuyen beating Blumberg or Feuille but I have been wrong already so who knows. I never do well in the NCAA pools.

Definitely agree about move from levels. I haven't had shock moving up to 4.0 until I see a top level 4.0 and I realize how far I have to go. Same goes for the 3 guys that played on Wed, Marc, David and Brian, they are rated 3.5as of today but on July 15th they will be 4.0s and shouldn't have any problem competing at that level, in fact Brian already does OK up at 4.0.

Seems like at all levels it is more about intellgence rather than how hard or well you hit the ball as shown by Sarosh Ahmed getting beat by a player described as having a cake 2nd serve.

  23. impressive, that is the earliest exit for Forrest in EVER. Wow, well he should be back to play tomorrow on the Lifetime team.

Good win for Blumberg he is now the fav to win it all.

  24. Trae B here reporting about Day 1 in Tyler,

It was a little weird driving 125 miles to play a guy I hit with all the time and have played a little doubles with but it is what it is! We had a good match that started off with me still asleep in the 1st set and Leonard hitting every line known to man.

The 2nd set found me up a couple breaks and playing my preferred aggressive style and taking him out then the 3rd was a classic back and forth set with me putting together a couple more shots than he did.

My bigger problem of the day dealt with the courts that we were assigned to play Nguyen. My game plan against him was simple but I thought I could pressure him and bully him off the courts but the Tyler tourney people assigned 8 matches to the worst tennis courts known to man at a local high school. The court's nets measured correctly at the net but some idiot decided to pitch the courts down to help with drainage so at the baseline it seemed like you were hitting over a net that was nearly 4 feet high!!! Nguyen is even more "vertically challenged" than I am and I could only see the the top of his head over the net when we were both on the baseline. This made flat 1st serves nearly impossible and approach shots that would normally be 3 feet in are now 2 feet long! Anyone who knows me know that I am not the most patient player in the world so hitting moon balls to a guy that runs down everything didn't seem like a good idea. He adapted better and took me out so I will just have to take one of these #1 seeds out so I can quit having to play them every tournament (4 tourneys - 3 #1 seeds)!

Forrest played his match on the same courts and took his guy out in 35 minutes 0,1. Blumberg played on the court next to me and he played an effective "moon ball" cat-and-mouse game to advance to face Forrest.

My man Trevino had a rough day. He was plagued by the dreaded "4.0 pusher" in both his singles matches then gad to scramble to find a doubles partner because his partner pulled out. So three rough losses for him.

If I was a betting man, my money would be on Forrest to take this thing but I think Blumberg will make him work a little more than usual.

4.0 Doubles is a crap shoot. Leonard and I played a decent match last night but we let our opponents back into both sets but we are going to try to make a little noise and sneak into the Sunday and the semis.

    SIDE NOTE:
A lot of the Houston guys are reading and keeping up with Dallas tennis thru this blog.

  28. good for him, I will have to meet the woman that can be with John for 18 years.

wow I am bored waiting on tennis results, I think I am going to make dinner.

you are right though Corey not the norm in this age, I know the statistic is around 50% but out of all my friends that I went to college with about 4 have stayed married out of around 20. One of those has been separated twice and probably should get a divorce. Ok enough Oprah talk going to get some Chinese food.
