On to Sectionals 5.0 and 3.0 Preview--The Big Boys and The Small Guys

In 5.0, there is never a wildcard but I was hopeful.  Dallas has some great 5.0 teams this year.  Perkison's Village People are in a 5 team Round Robin to compete for a chance to make it to Nationals.  As usual, this is some good quality tennis.

5.0
The teams with us are San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Fort Worth.  With only 5 cities fielding leagues in a section as big as Texas, you would think the USTA would understand our fear and loathing of going to 5.0.

Dallas:  We already know the Village has Loren Collins.  He is formidable against anyone.  Johann Jooste is another very formidable player but a little rusty from his Baylor playing days.  Still, if he is practicing some, that is a mighty pair that is hard to get by.  Tyler Jiminez is pretty strong too.  Should be fun and good luck

San Antonio is anchored by Juan Carlos Moreiras.  I can't say I know him but he is a Self Rated 5.5 and if that not a great tennis player name, I don't know what is.

Austin is always tough at 5.0 and above.  It helps to have a VERY LARGE flagship university in your town.  Universities of this size Club Teams and Greek System can field a competitive D-I roster.  The have Eric Cohn as their 5.5.  I think he played for SMU some years back.  At least Juan DeKruyff isn't on this roster to torment us again.

Houston has no 5.5 on the roster.  I see Craig Bobo is on the roster but he is getting older.  I can't say I know much about this team from a quick look.  The did beat Freeman's Hurricanes team who finished second.

Fort Worth (aka West Dallas) comes out of River Crest. They have Jon Stitt and Rafael Omana.  They also have Tristan Stitt but he is playing for the real Dallas 4.5 team.  I see Jack Seider on the roster as a 5.5 and if memory serves me, I think he is a former TCU player.  They have another 5.5 of Zach Nichols.  He too may have played for TCU.  This may be a sleeper team.

This level is so hard to pick.  There are only three lines and everyone is really good.  A bad day by a player and only three lines creates upsets.  I am going with a homer pick of Dallas.  I am not certain in the slightest.

3.0 is a 6 Team Round Robin.  The participants are High Point/Bender with Austin, NETX, Fort Worth, San Antonio and SETX.  Analysis is extremely tough on 3.0.  First, I know extremely little.  The players have very little history.

Dallas with Bob Bender has won a number of these titles.  He has 13 players on his roster and the only name I have ever seen is Robert Bender.  I am still confident he will do well.

Austin They were 6-2 in their flight to win it.  While that may not mean anything, it may mean it is an entire flight of beginners.

NETX comes from a two team flight.  Once again, it is difficult to tell anything.  I don't know a name and with only two teams, I get skeptical if the matches were ever played.

SETX can be a mirror of NETX.  2 Teams without a known name.  They were 8-1 in their flight over the other team and didn't even play one of their matches.  One has to think they would hold them off in that last match.

Fort Worth has another 2 team flight.  If you read either NETX or SETX, you already know more or less what I am going to say.  It is easier to just look up at those.

San Antonio has a huge flight and a playoff.  A team out of Sonterra emerged.  Sonterra usuallyhas good teams so this could be a tough match.  I suspect it will be between Dallas and San Antonio.

In the end, I am going with the homer pick again.  Also, I am going with a captain that has been there before.  Best of luck to both of you.

I started with these two because there is a lot less to preview.  I will be putting something together for the other levels later this week.

  1. Tony Le had another DQ. Brian J. Gilson. Doesn't look like one so must be a grievance.

  2. interesting DQ, think it might be a Dynamic DQ from self-rate not a grievance, since he was only 4.5 7 years ago

    1. It may be. I thought you had to self rate at your last rating. I guess he could have appealed.

    2. you do self-rate at last rating but you can appeal down half a point, but you are subject to Dynamic DQ

  3. I can promise it was a grievance. Tony is being made an example of and they are now going too far. Leave the freakin guy alone, DAMN! Gee, I wonder who is behind it? One guess.

    1. How many DQs is it now?
      Ryan McClanahan to 5.0 Grievance
Brian J. Gilson to 4.5 Dynamic or Grievance?
      Carlos Aguilar to 5.0 Grievance
Jorge Aguilar from 3.5 to 4.0 Grievance

We haven't got to sectionals. The Monday after sectionals and he may not be able to field a nationals team.

    2. Doesn't he have to win sectionals to get to nationals?

    3. Winning sectionals is easy. Getting our guys to nationals isn't.

  4. Since kelley stopped playing mens they must find a new example to hound and abuse. Absolutely unjust and wreaks of bias. They had no right in dq'ing Gilson. That is an absolute unfair dq.

  5. Absolutely agree. how does he get dq'd?????

  6. this has to be a Dynamic DQ otherwise DTA looks like a bunch of idiots (I know hard to believe), many times they will close grievances 1-2 weeks before a championship, that no one filed one previously seems ridiculous and nothing in his record seems out of place, he did not play league for 7 years and was a 4.5 so what he self rated as is not out of line with what many do every three years when they choose to sit out.

  7. As I said, this is a total witch hunt. We have seen this before. Just different complainers and whiners going to Todd than "you know who" got moved up without merit last time. Tony has unfairly been singled out.

    1. Tony put a great team together and Todd is just taking care of his buddies in Austin and Houston.

    2. Tony has the best 4.0's in town and assembled a great roster. He has been singled out and that is absolutely unacceptable. No other captain has EvER been scrutinized like this before. Cant wait until next year when Sam hyunn and others kick ass.

  10. Gilson shows as a dynamic rating. Means he reached his third strike. Two of his wins were against 4.5 bump-ups.
Must have self-rated, been given 4.5 and then appealed that to 4.0.
he was bumped up mid-year which indicates his dynamic was over 4.5. Any self-rate that happens to is risking being disqualified by playing additional matches.
They only DQ after the event. If anyone is DQ's at sectionals, it won't affect sectionals results, it would mean that they can't play if Dallas makes 4.0 nationals.

  11. Tony - he so funny. He go himself as computer rate and tank by getting beat up by low-rate computer rates in Fall. He has his other computer rates do same thing.

Then in Spring, he let his self-rate play high end computer rate and have close match. Let them get set wins like 6-0 and 6-2 against player who are high rated 4.0 and get bumped to 4.5 mid season.

He so funny! He wonder why system DQ.

I think he just want to scare his opponent and add players to roster that he know don't belong and let them get bumped. He now just has roster of computer rates who sand bag. He so funny!!!

You can't call him cheater now. He too funny. Or is he too smart? Or is he too stupid??

  12. I thought Tony was supposed to be Somabut's prote'ge'. but with all the self-rate faux pas, evidently not.

    2. What kind of a wise ass question is that? Don't get how the Dallas tennis community cuts each other down. Everyone seems courteous to every one during match play. But behind the name of Anon, the bad side of people are revealed.

Not a 3.0 and not a 5.0. Just curious why the post on those two levels which have the least amount of players.

    3. Normally agree with you that behind Anon, bad side of people comes out. However, if you had just read the full post then you should have seen this at the bottom of the post:

"I started with these two because there is a lot less to preview. I will be putting something together for the other levels later this week."

    4. I'm not 2:28 and I am not Murray but the thread did say "I started with these two because there is a lot less to preview. I will be putting something together for the other levels later this week."

It isn't like Murray gets paid to do this. You might be a little less demanding.

  15. Your post was a little snarky. I am sure Murray will get to your level too.

  16. wasn't meaning to be "snarky". All this political correctness. After all the mud that has been slung on here and we are getting "snarky"? Not sure what that means but can't be near as bad as the bashing done on these teams and players that try to make a run at something beyond city. Hope everyone goes and supports our teams we have at Sectionals.

    1. Have you ever been to sectionals? Almost no one shows up for sunday after they've been eliminated. It would be great if everyone had to watch the semis and finals because it would eliminate a lot of the bitching. When people realize that that guy who beat them in flight play that they cried about - got beat by some guy at cities and he cried about it - and that guy got killed by some ringer from Houston. People have no idea how good 4.0 and 4.5 gets by they time sectionals sunday rolls around.
