Shall We Play a Game? 40s Mixed Sectionals Preview...

I am always amused that for a game nobody likes (including me), it gets more attention than any other topic.  Also, since we are winding down and there is little else in the line of news to discuss until playoffs, I decided to make a little (and I mean a little) research into how our boys and girls (older boys and girls) will do on the first real quest for nationals for 2015.  I opted to ask the WOPR who would win this weekend and this is what I got...

9.0  We are represented by a Fretz/Lallier team.  Looking at the roster, the best player is Justin Huffman.  He is a consistent producer and a tough matchup for anyone.  At 40+, he has as good of a serve as you will find.  His issue is not him on the court but he has a 5.0 rating.  That means he gets to play with a 4.0 woman.  Looking at the results, his 4.0 women are not the kind that are about to get moved to 4.5.  The other 5.0s are Blake Whitaker and Marc Resteiner.  Both are good players but they too must play with a 4o woman.  Their best hope lies with a 4.5/4.5 combination.  Williams, Laselle & Ramos are all good 4.5s but not the very top.  I hate to say it but I am not sold on this team getting out of sectionals.  Their competition is Austin, Houston, NOHO and Fort Worth.  All are known to be pretty good.  It will be tough but 40s is not quite the same.  I hope I am wrong but see them finishing in the middle of the pack.

8.0 We are represented by the always formidable Springpark/Abbruzzese squad.  I believe they are our best chance to win sectionals.  Alan's 3.5 women are usually better than manyof the other team's 4.0 women.  They are helped a lot that their 4.5 men of Eugene Davis and Voldemort Kelly are better than anyone else's 4.5 men.  Donnie Pollard is right there with them.  Alan is sitting proudly with his 4.0 rating means he gets to play with women better than his usual opponent.  Their team is probably too much for anyone else.  I'm not seeing where other teams can get two lines.

7.0 We are represented by another Springpark/Abbruzzese squad.  This team appears to be a contender but not as stacked as Alan's 8.0 team.  They have Zackary, Clark ad Pearson as 4.0 men.  Similar to Alan, Wiley is sitting with a 3.5 rating so he gets to play with a better woman.  Their 3.5 women probably won't be as strong as the 8.0 or Alan would be playing them at 8.0.  Regardless, you don't beat everyone easily unless you have some players.  I'm not as convinced but they should be competitive with anyone.

6.0  We are represented by Greenhill/Alzuro.  To be honest, I didn't even know there was a 6.0 team until today.  There aren't a lot of teams and I don't know anything about this team so I am going to pick them to win sectionals.  I could try and analyze it but I've never heard anything about them.

I'm really hoping we go 4 for 4 and make a statement.  I don't think we get shutout but going 4 for 4 is asking a lot.  Good luck to all of you.

    3. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? MIXED BLOGS NOW??? amazing what crap SP has done to this city with their mixed domination. I would have thought hell would freeze over before I have seen so much mixed attention. And why on earth feed the ego of Kelley by calling him "'Valdemort", "he not to be named", etc... I even saw one post that referred to Kelley as the "Stanimal" (referring to Stan Wawrinka) because Kelley has worked on coming over his backhand. That is throwing gas on an already burning fire. Seems everyone says mixed is a joke but SP steals the headlines and blog openings week after week after week. Absolutely unbelievable. Alan A should run for president because his ability to market a product is better that anyone in Texas tennis, period. He has taken a small club and made country clubs look like day cares. wow.

  10. Carlos Aguilar moved to a 5.0 (from a 3.5)
    Ryan McClanahan moved to a 5.0 (from a 3.5)
    Jorge Aguilar moved to a 4.0 (from a 3.5) - should have been 4.5
    Now Tony's team is just a bunch of 4.5 tankers - Sectionals will be a good fight between him and Freeman

    1. Jorge evidently played Tennis on Campus but did not play in the playoffs so that's a 4.0 rating on the chart. With these two losses it looks like it should be Freeman as the favorite again.

  11. Now lets look at Tony's team:

    Tony Le - 4.0 - maybe a 4.5 but 4.0 is nothing too crazy
    Shawn Acaria - 4.0 - right rating
    Owen Wilson - 4.0 - should be a 4.5 - tanked extra in spring (0-5)
    Ryan DelaPaz - 4.0 - should be a 4.5
    Tim Newman - 4.0 - right rating
    Andrew Alarid - 4.0 - should be a 4.5
    Victor Tran - 4.0 - should be a 4.5
    Mo Mahmoud - 3.5 -
    Doug Voss - 4.0 - right rating
    Ryan McClahan - DQ
    Stephen Bennett - 4.0 - ok
    Carlos Aguilar - DQ
    Jorge Aguilar - 4.0 - should be a 4.5

  12. I think if you asked Tony he would be happy to really only lose two ringers. He is still WAY ahead of the game.

  18. Murray, redo your opening blog. SP not going to win sectionals at San Antonio. Confidence shattered and now just a has been team. The run is over. beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow... Like I've done before with the blog. I'll answer each person.

    First, give credit to Greenhill. They have a solid team. They won. We didn't choke. They won. If you look at all my post this year, I said this is the toughest 8.0 league we have had in years. I don't think that team will finish the season undefeated. We will see them again in playoffs and if they beat us again, I will congratulate them and wish them well at sectionals.

    Second, Mike won 3-1. He didn't get his ass kicked. I know it doesn't matter because the team lost, but he won.

    "Confidence shattered" REALLY? We are all fine. It was a Tuesday practice match. We've been beat before. When we won in 2010, we were best twice that year. It's really no big deal. We will still try our best at sectionals. And if we get beat, we get beat. Again, we've been beaten before.

    Finally, one tiny shot at Greenhill spectators. Which they had a few. Well more like spectator. My initials are AA. Maybe you should look up what else that stands for. You may need it getting that drunk on a Tuesday night and acting like a total bitch. I won't name names, but when your own team wins and then apologizes for your actions, you may need professional help.

    And again congratulations to Greenhill. They played great and there was no issues on the court. But, don't sit back and enjoy it to long. It's a tough and long season. We will be ready for round 2 at Briokhaven.

    AA

    And addiction is a disease, get some professional help.

    And please post some names. I I like to know who I'm talking to.

    1. Look at Alan come to board and let everyone know he is "OK", but then go on and whine about some spectator. Classic little bitch move.

      Keep on tankin' Alan...it fits.

    2. Greenhill had the same problem at men's 40s cities. Don't know if it was the same guy but at 40s cities Greenhill had a non-playing spectator who was drunk, heckling during points and cussed some players as they came off the courts. Their captain apologized several times after it was all done but no one said anything to the drunk during the match. Pretty embarrassing.

    3. I'm so sorry. I just found out that the person I referred to as an alcoholic was not drinking. I guess that's just her personality. I

    5. Beating Gene Davis is impressive.

  20. Impressive win by Greenhill, but it won't matter. Davidson will be playing at cities and he's even better than Kelly.

    AA is out of line with a personal attack of that nature against a spectator, though. Many Dallas players dislike SP due to their constant tanking, this just adds fuel to the fire.

    ReplyDelete
  21. alan is totally spot on. Total lack of class on part of Greenhill spectators. Oh well, when you mix alcohol and luck anything can happen. Oh, and Sam Hyunh does not tank? You people are clueless. Go look at his history. He loses to Bob Simabut 0 and 1? Huynh is a bigger tanker than even Kelley is and that is saying something.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If I really wanted to add fuel to the fire, audit told you who it was. It wasn't just a spectator. It was somebody on their team.

  25. You are right , kelley sux. he should be a 4.0.lol. he has won more than anyone of you could dream about. He must be doing something right as he just keeps winning. When you win you are hated. Btw, Ashby played a great match. He is a friend of mine so don't take anything away from him. That was a huge win.

    1. Agree with above. He just keeps on winning even after teams add a player at the last minute thinking they will do the job. Don't like kelley but the guy is pure clutch. 26. Analysis of Tony Le's 7.0 Team (guys):
    Jorge Aguilar – 3.5 – is probably a 5.0 player but at the worst a top level 4.5 player – see history below
    Tournament history from 2014 in Open division:
    - Cotton Bowl singles – won 1 match and lost 2nd round match
    - Cotton bowl doubles – lost opening match – pleayed with Jean Nguyen
    - Charlie Weaver – lost opening match; won one and lost one in consolation rounds
    - Looks to have played Boys 18s tournament in 2009;
    League history from 2014:
    - Played on Oak Creek/Erbe 4.0 division – Played 4 doubles matches with Carlos Aguilar – Lost all 4 matches – scores were 6-4,6-4; 6-1,6-4; 6-0, 6-2; 6-2, 6-1;
    Carlos Aguilar – 3.5 –Now Carlos is not on the team but most likely he will join – he is definitely a 5.0 player – is currently the #2 ranked player in Men’s Open Doubles – see history below
    Looks to have played Boys 18s tournaments in 2010;
    Tournament history from 2014 in Open division:
    - Charlie Weaver – Open Doubles – Won the Doubles title with Ferny Avila
    - Played in Poke-Jos Top 8 Mens Open Doubles – won 1 match – no other matches played
    - Cotton Bowl – Open Doubles – won 2 matches lost 1 match – played with Ferny Avila
    - Charlie Weaver –Open Singles - won 1st round match and lost in 2nd rd
    League history from 2014 – losses I mentioned above and singles loss 6-2,6-2;
    Ryan McClanahan - 3.5 - it looks like he might have played for something called Tennis on Campus while he was in college at OU. So must be a younger guy. His team seemed to be good and they seemed to have gone far in USTA competition. For him to be playing USTA recreational tennis while he was at OU, he must have played in high school and was probably pretty good. He probably wanted to keep playing competitively. He is most likely a mid-level 4.5 player
    Victor Tran – 4.0 – is probably a good 4.5 player
    Tony Le - 4.0 - probably 4.5
    Mo Mahmoud - 3.5 - lots of 6-0,6-1,6-2 defeats in 4.0 in the fall - however regained form this year - its a miracle; probably a 4.0
    Thanh Tran - 3.0 - this is a straight up joke - Thanh won Brookhaven Mixed 4.0 doubles (4 matches); he is most likely a 4.0
    James peter burger – 3.5 – was not able to find much on burger – plays mostly 3.5 and mixed – has a lot of wins but nothing out of the ordinary –probably a top 3.5 player
    Chuck Lee – 3.0 – was not able to find much – he played in one match at #3 line and won – anytime a guy is self-rate 3.0, we can call bullshit on that – let us be conservative and call him a 3.5 player
    Jose Aguilar – 3.5 – not much history on Jose
