Dallas League Tennis – The Way It Should Be

So with the season wrapped up, and the QT around the corner, let’s have a recap of the season.

First, my predictions at the beginning of the season, followed by the actual winners :
(Flight winner, followed by 2nd place team going to QT, 3rd place in parenthesis)

 Predicted:                                                                 ACTUAL:

Flight A – GTC, Eldorado                                         Eldorado, GTC  (LB Houston 3rd)

Flight B – 3 way tie Brookhaven, T-Bar &             2-way tie - T-Bar, Oak Creek
                 Oak Creek                                                (Springpark 3rd)

Flight C – HP, Fair Oaks                                             Fair Oaks, HP

Flight D – Canyon Creek, Royal Oaks                    Canyon Creek, Royal Oaks

Flight E – McKinney, Greenhill                                McKinney, Greenhill; (Huffhines 3rd)

With the exception of my dyslexic calls on Flight A & Flight C, you have to admit that was pretty good.  So the question begs to differ, out of having 45 teams and close to 700 players, has regular season play in Dallas tennis really become this predictable?  I only know a handful of players and made speculative guesses on many of the flight calls.  But to get it this close before a match was played?

What I liked about this season is that the top 20% of teams and players are pretty well equal and competitive with each other on any given day.  What I got wrong was not giving enough credit to the core of Dallas tennis, and giving too much credit to the leaders of the past.   Congratulations to Eldorado for beating Sisk and team Corey for defying the odds and beating Le.  (Looks like Terrell earned his pay for those 2 Miller Lights.)  What looked like was going to be a flawless season for Bazan in Flight E , was disrupted by Hackberry with an end of season spoiler and raising concerns with some of their doubles strength.   The only team to emerge having a flawless season with no losses was the boys at Canyon Creek.  Congratulations and well deserved.  While impressive, enjoy things while they last, because I don’t think it will be that easy for you come Cities.

So what appeared to be a foregone conclusion (a city finals with Sisk & Le) now turns to the battle in QT with only one of those teams emerging.  That is, if one does emerge.    While each of those teams have a handful of exceptional players (Le has Weimer & Glasgow; Sisk has Flora & Baker), they aren’t stacked.  The remainder of their rosters (while seasoned) appear to be on equal footing with other team rosters coming to the dance.  This was proven to us throughout the season by other teams with no hired guns on their roster able to take lines from each of these teams.   Also, the late additions to both of these rosters by both captains tells me they are still needing depth.  Sisk added a couple of self-rates so not sure if their losses are real or planned.  Le has recruited additional computer rated players, going as far west as to Fort Worth.  My question is why?

In addition, will all of their players be available for the QT weekend?  I am sure when the season began the QT was not on either of these captain’s calendar.  This is an unexpected weekend they are having to play, and having to get their top players clearance for two straight weekends in the midst of summer vacations might be challenging.  The question is will Sisk need to get clearance from any parole officers for his newly recruited self rates?

Even if one of these teams does emerge, it is a difficult task taking a team through 4 matches in the QT and then playing the following week in Cities.  In fact, I do not know of a team in the past that has won the QT to go on and win Cities.

What becomes even more interesting and a topic of debate  is how the DTA will determine the flights.   I know I was disappointed this year with Roland Garros seeding 1-3, 2-4, which gave cause for the true final occurring in the semis.  The US Open did the same seeding.  However, if you look at the Australian and Wimbeldon, they seeded 1-4, 2-3.  In looking at years past of Dallas City Playoffs, I don’t follow any pattern.  If you look at the last time there were flights in City, which was 2011, it appears they seeded based on lines won, not matches won since two flights only had 7 matches as opposed to the other 3 flights having 8 matches.  That year, they were flighted 1-3, 2-4.  If you look back to 2010, it is a bit more confusing.  All but one flight had 8 matches.  If you look at matches won, they seeded 1-2, 3-4.  If you look at games won, there is no pattern as 2-3-4  were all in the same flight.  Rumor has it that they have been known to do “blind” draws if some teams had unequal amounts of matches.  Perhaps that’s what they did in 2010.  This year, all teams from all flights played 8 matches so I don’t think that would be the case.    Regardless, if you look at matches won or games won, it still seeds Le as 1st and Sisk as 2nd.

To make matters even more interesting, this is the 1st time they have given 3rd place teams a seeding in the QT. The  QT has typically been round-robin with no flights, so there is no real precedence here.   Given the wacky Fall play-off format we had, I think any seeding is possible.  What if the DTA actually tried to level the playing field some and for the QT seed 1st and 2nd place in the same play-off flight, followed by 3rd and 4th place in the opposing flight?  I’m not saying that is going to happen (although that’s how it was flighted in 2010), and would be surprised if it does, but that would mean you would have the GTC/HP showdown before Sunday.  Now wouldn’t that be amusing.

My understanding is that schedules won’t be released until the week of play-offs, so we will all be in a quandary until then.  If it is 1-3-5-7 and 2-4-6-8, it will be Le, Ohl, Brauer & Walters in one flight and Sisk, Head, Parsons & Prather in the other. Regardless of how the flights are determined and seeded, the difficult part is calling a winner.   Whether in the same flight or not, I still believe we will see a GTC/HP match.  Given the recent roster adds, with Sisk having a few self-rates as unknown commodities, and Le’s added computer rates while good but not overly impressive, I have to go with Sisk winning.  I think Ohl makes honorable mention, if not for finishing 3rd, at least for keeping me hydrated out there watching.  Greg- your cooler is safe with me!

As far as Cities, we will look at that once we know the QT winner.   I think this year it is anyone’s to grab.

Good luck to all teams playing in both events.

  1. Good write up, but despite there being 700 players only about 200 are 4.0. So yes, it is that predictable.

  2. Glasgow and Flora both win in single unless they draw each other. Wouldn't that be interesting. Edge to Glasgow since he actually plays some singles. Newman and Rios just destroyed two of Freeman's guys in the Tyler MZ final. As long as Tony doesn't screw up his lines he's looking good.

  3. Newman and Weymer locks a second line with Glasgow. Don't think Sisk has 2 lines that strong.

  4. I give the edge to Kelley and the Hackberry crew.... He will somehow find his game come playoff time! With the likes of Rios, Barta and Jeng they will be tough in doubles and Kelley a guaranteed lock in singles ..

  7. Assuming the DTA does seed the 8 teams in the QT, then logic suggests that the #8 seed would be in the same flight as the #1 seed, along with the #4 and #5 seeds. Common sense is not always common, especially when predicting what the DTA will do.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Everyone gave the flight to Sisk and Le. Now everyone is giving QT to them. You see what happened last time. I'd bet one of them gets beat by someone else in QT and I'd bet its when they decide to go with their second string to get them some playing time.

  9. The way USTA does tournaments and I would guess league playoff is they seed 1-8 and put 1 and 2 on opposite sides. Random draws place 3 and 4 in opposite brackets, likewise 5-6, and 7-8. They do this so in every major tournament 1 doesn't play 4 and 2 vs 3 every time. Makes some sense.

Tough to say who will win as one day you will have to play 2 matches and in the heat singles becomes difficult to dominate.

    2. Le doesn't hardly talk at all. Sisk does have his moments. As the post says, it's their players and isn't that what the blog is for? But one of them will be very disappointed shortly. Still think they have two of the best three teams in town. They should be embarrassed about not getting the captaining job done.

      Delete
    3. And who do you think has the third best team?

      Delete
    4. Bazan, but only if he doesn't play himself

      Delete
  23. I dont think anyone would trash talk from our HP team. I think it is someone else pretending to be an HP player. Almost all of the guys from the HP team have been in the playoffs and have zero need to trash talk. Did we expect to win our flight, yes. But are we humiliated that we didnt? That is funny. We get to play another weekend of tennis. If we are not good enough to win QT, then we would not be good enough to win cities and make our way to sectionals. It is that easy. Some of you are obviously obsessed with Le, Sisk, and Kelly that you need to keep bringing them up. You maybe need to look in the mirror to see who the ones talking trash are.

    3. no one on that team tanked. If you look at the scores most were 3-2 and many had more than one 3rd set loss. If you look at the team most came from teams that were "sectionals or bust" for years. I was told this was a "have a beer after the match" team rather than "sectionals or bust". They probably weren't ever going to make citi's but they were only a few points here or there from being middle to upper middle of the pack.

  46. When will ESR be released. Tankers need to know.....

    ReplyDelete
  47. ESR will come out that Monday or Tuesday after QT, but before City, if the DTA's schedule holds true.

QT seeting looks to be good as well as scheduling. They have top teams in each flight playing each other last on Sunday morning, before having to play the finals. Should cause the captains to think twice and decide if their singles can go 2 matches back-to-back. This is where depth is key and upsets can happen. If your Greenhill or Oak Creek, you go full guns. Question is does Le and Sisk use their best there or try and save them for the final.

Plan on skipping church Sunday morning (or go Saturday night). This should be a good one.

  67. Twas the night before QT Finals , all quite on the courts
With Brandon and the DTA all out of sorts

Their 2 favorite contenders to make Sectionals on line
But only 1 team from this bunch will make it this time

All pre-season planning and conniving has come down to this
With a QT face-down of Tony Le and John Sisk

With a commanding yell, both leaders did say
Sent out their last line-ups with total dismay

“On Glasgow, On Newman, Arcaria and Weymer”
“This ain’t my first rodeo, I’m no first timer”

And to Tony’s reply Sisk belted out
“I’ve got you matched”, and then began to shout

“I’ve got Flora, and Baker, Corcoran and Brown”
And then the smile on Le’s face turned into a frown

“My frown is not of fear”, Le began to say
“It’s of Weymer hungover and not ready to play”

And with Teturude out of town and no back-ups in place
The frown became a grimace of disgrace on his face.

Then Sisk feeling guilty began to blush
Realizing his back up Wiley was drunk as a lush

Then they both started to chuckle before starting to play
“Let’s both retire and screw DTA”

As they knew deep down what mattered most
Was a great team representation of Sectional’s city’s host

But that’s not the fate for this year’s play
And the boys at CC think they might have another day

But the hopes for Nationals from their recent 3.0s
Is just that, a hope, because in Sectionals, Freeman then shows

“You guys are just amateurs”, he will flippantly say
As his 5.0 tankers will begin to display

But all that’s for naught because further down south
The Caribbean lies and has conquered throughout

Nine of 10 years, these cheats have won
So why bother now and destroy each one

So Sisk pulled out his cooler, and Le his dim sung
And they both agreed “Let’s just play, and go have some fun!”

So play they did, and friends they became
As they realized their visions were both the same.

Work hard, play hard, and live life to the fullest
Value good friendship, and ignore the rest of life’s bulllshit.

So once rivals, now friends, from QT they departed
Knowing the best tennis lies ahead….
    Then Sisk just farted

(Only thing that rhymed. Sorry Big John!)

    Stay thirsty my friends!

  76. Will seeding for cities be 1,4,5 and 2,3,6 or will it be 1,4,6 and 2,3,5? Any know, Cory?

  77. Looks like QT turned out to be pretty uneventful. Lets hope cities is a little more exciting.

  81. So ...Eldorado, CC, FO, Bazan,T-Bar, and Le's team in cities. I watched Le's team some this weekend and I think they will run away with city. Who is the second best team?

    ReplyDelete
  82. We will not run away with anything. The teams in cities are all tough. Flights are Bazan/Eldorado/Tbar and HP/CC/Fair Oaks in the 2nd flight.

    1. Well even though HP was the 6th team into the tournament they got a great draw. Friday at 6pm and saturday at 10am. They dont have to play two matches in a day, and both matches will be played while it's still cool. Fair Oaks and McKinney got screwed.

    2. Whine whine whine. Just play the matches.

    3. Great draw? They got #2 & #3 seeds. I'm sure the Canyon Creek team is bummed. There goes their chances. Should be good flight play with CC/HP match up and McKinney/Eldorado match up.

  83. The teams playing 2 matches on Saturday definitely have to manage their singles. The QT this weekend had a couple singles guys who had heat exhaustion after only 1 match outdoors. To think a singles player can go 2 matches outside is not smart.

    1. That was my point about HP getting a good draw. I don't care who they are playing. The fact is they only have to play 1 match a day. FO and McKinney can kiss their asses goodbye having to play 2 matches in a day. It seems like the two worst seeds in each flight should have had to play 2 matches in a day.

U r kidding right??!!! I played against him in a pro am in Ft Worth 3 weeks ago and he held his own against some 5.5 college players.. But u r right, he is not the same player he was, he is BETTER....

  87. I still think El Dorado looks very good here. By the way, anyone notice the guys that got bumped down? Some questions there! But.. Tanking in the spring? Thoughts?

    1. The best thing eldorado has going for it is they aren't on Le's side of the bracket.

  88. Eldorado does look good. But their close 3-2 win over Garland doesn't look as good as Le's sweep. HP still looks better.

  89. Bazan wins that flight.

    1. Unlikely since they have to play twice in a day.

  90. Does no one think Fair Oaks has a chance to beat HP again?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Off course Fair Oaks has a chance to beat HP again. HP probably has the best team, but they are not that much better than many of the teams in Cities.

    1. They are 5 lines better than Garland.

  92. Availability of players in the playoffs is always a factor. Some teams could have key players missing.

  93. Tony Le was dominant. He didn't have to use Teterud. He will be unstoppable with his big gun.

  94. Tiny Le is best captain in Dallas... Should have been trilevel champion....
