Midpoint Season Review

Interesting weekend for Mother’s Day.
4.0 is scheduled to play on Saturday and will have to put any weekend plans for Mamma on hold.  Out of 5 flights of teams, the first place and second place team will be playing each other in 3 of the 5 flights.
Flight A is between Garland and Eldorado – When you look at up-to-date stats, each team has 22 wins, 3 losses, 9 sets lost.  Eldorado has fewest games lost at 128.  On paper, it makes up for a great match.  In reality, neither team has really been tested, and I have to favor Sisk with a 4-1 win.  Eldorado should secure 2nd for a trip to QT.

Flight B  Springpark/Walters and T Bar/Snow – T Bar stumbled to Oak Creek a few weeks back and could be an indication they are not as tough as Springpark who beat OC.  They still have Brookhaven/Bartlett  to face although not sure what is going on with Brookhaven having lost to Fretz/Jayaram 1-4.   Springpark should finish out the season taking this flight, with a 3-way fight between Brookhaven, Oakcreek and T Bar for 2nd.
Flight C  - High Point/Le and Fair Oaks/Noel face off as well.  Both teams are undefeated and both teams very close in stats like flight A with same # of wins and losses.  High Point has fewer sets lost by 1, but Fair Oaks has 12 fewer games lost.  Again, like flight A, it’s one thing on paper, but another story once they hit the courts.  Neither team has been challenged, so the numbers to this point are meaningless.  However, if Le doesn’t have his top 8 and Noel has his, I think it becomes a closer match than one would expect, but still take Le with a 3-2 win.

Flight D – no drama this weekend for this flight.  Canyon Creek/Dawson leads the pack followed by Gleneagles/Fults.  This flight will have their showdown the last week with these teams facing each other.  I still go with CC taking this flight.
Flight E – McKinney/Bazan and Huffhines/Prather are both undefeated and face off each other next weekend.   Bazan has won 2 matches 5-0 and the other 2 matches 4-1.  Prather has won all of their matches 4-1.  Can Greenhill/Ohl provide an upset this weekend and knock Huffhines off their undefeated path?  Just depends on how many beers Greg has in his cooler and if they hit a few before they step on the court.

So with Mamma to please, will enough of the boys get a hall pass to play and each team come stacked with their best rosters?  Or will Mamma, tired of the Sunday Brunch buffet, demand that the weekend is tennis free, and matches get postponed or teams exposed to vulnerabilities?

Post your thoughts…..

  1. Huffhines will be lucky to win a set over the next two weeks v. Greenville and McKinney those two teams are a step above the rest of this weak flight

  2. Nice update..may be an interesting weekend since some teams may have players out due to Mothers Day travel.

RE: Flight D, CC/Dawson already played and defeated Gleneagles/Fults earlier in the season.

  3. Flight A is over. Eldorado has weak singles and LBH had their best singles player dq'd. Should allow big John to get each of his 42 players their two matches. Le only has to get his guys out for one match and his average lineup still beats FO. Better question is can someone else crash the party at sectionals.

    1. Sisk has weak singles too. Le can roll out whoever he likes and beat Fair Oaks. Bazan has the best team as they quietly sit over in Flight E and let everyone worry about Le and Sisk. It is a 3 team race for 2 seats at sectionals and Sisk will be left without a chair when the music stops playing.

    2. Has Bazan ever made it to sectionals? (Honest question) I will put my money on Le & Sisk to make sectionals.

      Delete
    3. Bazan has the best team? comical.

    4. If Le rolls out characters like Romero, Teterude, Bennet, Pak, Ho & To, he could easily drop 2 lines.

      Delete
    5. Yeah as long as he plays his 4.5s he'll win 5-0 easily.

      Delete
    6. Romero is terrible, he would definitely lose versus Fair Oaks.

      Delete
    7. We can roll those guys out and win 5 lines.

      Delete
    8. So at least give us credit to be able to win one line!

  6. El Dorado / Sisk could be an intersting match. Glen going to make an apperance on a singles court anytime soon? Never saw any good ranking of top singles across all flights. Weymer better than Flora probably? While we're at it, who are top 3 dubs lines?

    1. Weymer/Partner is the best. Glasgow/partner is second. Newman/partner is third.

    2. That good huh? With that sort of fire power they should win Nationals.

      Delete
    3. Anything less than nationals is a failed year.

      Delete
    4. That's a lot of failed years in a row

      Delete
    5. Weymar really? The guy has the strokes but sets off too easily. Doesn't play smart enough to win when it counts. If he had it upstairs he would be playing 5.0.

      Delete
    6. If he has 5.0 game, then even as a bit of a head case, he should do fine at 4.0. I've seen him play, he is the best 4.0 in the area and maybe anywhere.

      Delete
    7. ...plus he's only a decade or so out of his high school playing days in Plano, which makes him a kid compared to most of us.....and with more tats than Tipsarevic, you know he must have a bad a@@ game....why didn't he last at 4.5 though, must be a reason

      Delete
  7. 12:58pm has it spot on!!! And whoever said Romero isnt that good as clearly never talked to him about it! Fair Oaks might have a little suprise for you HP boys!

  8. So Craig Weymer went undefeated in nationals in 2009 at 4.0. He plays fall 2010 fall 4.0 where he also goes undefeated. Then he goes 2-1 in 2011 spring 4.5.

My question is how is he still a 4.0? I know he didn't play every season, but damn.

  9. As weak as flight play is this year it's lucky for Le and Sisk they have tough matches this weekend. Give them a better idea about who should be playing in the playoffs. We'll find out who can deliver when it matters

    1. Yes, it will tell Tony and Sisk who he can rely on in the playoffs. It will be interesting because both will be trying to get their best out.

      Delete
    2. Neither team needs their best to roll those guys.

      Delete
    3. True. Who does either team have that would concern Sisk or Le.

  10. Shoot - Le will sweep, not dropping a set. Anything less would be a total failure.

    1. We like to think of it that Fair Oaks beat High Point. I guess Le should have wanted a few more of us instead of old Somabut guys.

      Delete
    2. Wow, someone definitely wanted to play for Le is a little whiney bitch that he wasn't. Fair Oaks needs to learn with a little class. Le should be happy he does not have any of you playing for him. You would have thought they won cities or sectionals. Who cares if you beat Le's team, there are a number of other teams you will need to play at cities, unless all you care about is making cities.

      Delete
    3. I have no idea who posted as 6:45, but it wasn't me. I know we were pretty excited, but why shouldn't we be? Le's team is mostly Somabut and Arcaria guys who have been to sectionals every year I have played. According to this blog they had one of the two best teams along with Sisk. It was mother's day so I have no idea if their best players were out. Either way it was an upset. We might stumble and they could still win the flight, but I like our position.

  16. What? Are you kidding me? Tony Le's team lost? Why isn't it posted in tennis-link yet? A little embarrased??

After all this smack talk about being the greatest team and can roll out any 8 players and sweeep, and you lose?? What a joke.

I guess Tony couldn't make up the scores and hand them in to the USTA official on this match!!

Can't wait to see which players of Le's team couldn't get the job done.

May 11, 6:35 PM Poster -- no you won't be fine and win your flight. If Fair Oaks goes undefeated, which now looks to be the case, you my friend will be playing in the QT.

    What an EPIC FAIL !!!!

  18. Word is Le offered up some big monies to get a Fair Oaks line to change their scores but Nancy was having none of it. Karma is a bitch.

I'd bet big dough that either Arcadia or Bennett were one of the losses.

  20. Why can't I comment from my I-pad ?

I can't believe Garland doesn't have their scores in either. Wonder if they have something to hide or if they have played all of their lines.

Why is OC now a threat? They already have 2 losses. It does look like their single players have been rolling. But just because the mighty Teterude got thumped by their singles player doesn't mean they will roll us. Oh yeah, I forgot, Teterude is a 4.5. Fair Oaks better have a game plan.

  22. its always about the singles but this year it seems like the best players aren"t playiing singles. Who's gonna man up and deliver? It's too easy for so,e of these guys tp play doubles and blame their losses on me. I don't need their help to lose.

  25. Doesn't he hurt is shoulder every week and still go win. We almost went a full week with out talking about that a-hole. The 4.5 sectionals is in September and Greenhill has some solid doubles teams and a couple of ok singles guys. The question is will Kelly try and win and I still don't know about Alan A. usually gets beat in men's yet has some huge wins vs some top 4.5 players in the past few years. I guess he has some good 3.5 ladies.

    1. I just looked at Kelley s record, undefeated when it counts in 40's, trilevel cites ,sectional and nationals and 36-0 in mixed last few years. He will do whatever Alan a ask him to do.... I do not think he will try in 40 and over, nothing to gain. He has plenty of national titles

      Delete
    2. I hope shoulder injury puts him out for a long time, he may play hurt but he won't be able to win.... Lol

      Delete
    3. The real test will be how he does at an invitation only 45 and over grass court tourney in November. Was asked to play so let's see how fares, my bet is his shoulder heals rather quickly!!!!

    4. I thought he was getting a wildcard at a different grass court tournament

  27. I'm not bragging about my team. I just thought it was very typical of the blogosphere to anoint Le's team as city champs less than halfway through the season. They have a long way to go just like we do.

  28. Corey, are you working at Rockwell golf and athletic club now?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Le will win.... No questions asked, just like he did in trilevel cities

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Won Ft Worth or is that not a city?

      Delete
    2. How can you even compare tri-level to regular season play? Tri-level is a weekend tournament, you go to Fort Worth to face weeker competition, at Sectionals your thrown in a flight with your "B" team that played Dallas and got LAST PLACE because the other teams couldn't make it, your unbeatable 4.5s lost to Austin and then got schooled by Kelley and Moore. Shut your trap. The more you talk, the more stupid you appear.

      Delete
    3. Did not get "schooled" by anyone. Moore solid as usual but Kelley treed out of his mind and our guys had a bad day , we were one match from going to nationals if Kelley hadn't lucked out and played do well. Where was your team? Sitting home!

      Delete
    4. 6-2, 6-4 sounds schooled to me. I notice Kelly frequently trees out in matches he actually wants to win.

      Delete
    5. Well it was closer than the score , our guys could play Kelley 100 times and win probably 80 percent but they were tired and not used to playing a guy who never comes to the net, that is not classic doubles!

      Delete
  30. We won ft worth and should have won sectionals, we had the best doubles team in existence, they just played a bad match in the finals, we would have gone to nationals had they had won

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We had the best team ever? We lost twice at sectionals and wouldn't have even been in the finals without creative captaining.

      Delete
  31. I wonder if Tony knows you can use tennislink to enter scores. It appears he uses Pony Express to get the score to USTA corporate.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Cities will come down to who can win the most third-set tiebreakers and who has the most of their top players available as it does every year. With my luck we will be missing several of ours as we are most playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Nancy - You have every right to brag. You deserve it. Job well done!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Scores are out boys. Looks like it was another captaining blunder by the City's greatest captain. Looks like he under estimated the competition and didn't go with his strongest guns across the board. Who the hell is Sudarshan? Zeller in his top 8? Didn't he get bagled by Houston at Tri-level? I bet Teterude wished he would have played singles. Could have he had been a difference maker??!! (not)Can't believe Arcaria & Fogiel lost to Schultz & Terrell. Nice upset boys.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Four of those lines go as expected but Arcari & Fogiel losing had to be the swing match. Never know until you actually play.

      Delete
    2. Well the big key to that line was that we played it early so we changed our whole lineup going into Saturday.

      Delete
    3. That is what good captaining is all about!

      Delete
    4. But at the same time if we lose that first match we probably lose overall 4-1 or 5-0.

      Delete
  35. Maybe that is Tony's top 8.

    ReplyDelete
  36. HP wins if Weymer and Newman play on different lines? Three lockdown players in the line-up should win a match.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, switch Newman and Zeller and they win. Oh well, live and learn. Maybe Tony just wants to get his players more matches in QT.

      Delete
    2. It might unless two of them play together. Their three lockdown players all won.
