Something New

Not too many volunteers to take over the blog.  That creates a very boring blog, and reason for me to vent when I decide to drink.

Accordingly,  you now will get my limited insights via Tennis-Link and a very limited patience of perusing through what I might find of interest.   Of course, I have to have a bit of a buzz going to encourage the writing.    It was a tough, cold and wet Monday, so the local brew had my name calling on the way home.

I guess the first thing to cover is this past weekend Sectionals of Tri-Level.   Quite frankly, I will have to say what I saw was a disappointment.  First of all, I was disappointed to see that Dallas didn’t get a wild card.  Out of all the years I have played Tri-level, Dallas has always gotten a wild card and has sent the top two teams.

No shame in saying it, but I was really wanting to see Mc Hugh and Co. make a debut at Sectionals.  I watched  their match at Cities against Tony Le’s team on Saturday and was more than impressed with his 4.5s of Reiman and Hix.  Not sure which one was which, but the dude sporting the beard had game.  It was a shame he didn’t have the same line-up on Sunday against Kelly and Kiron, but even with the Sunday loss,  I truly thought he would get the wild card.

No love affair with CC, but in all honesty, I think deep down they are a good bunch of guys.  Just misunderstood.  I actually can say I beat McHugh back in the days of 3.0 land.  Yes, McHugh was a 3.0 and I played him with an old high school buddy of mine and won.  That was back in 2006 and I believe Robert was just coming back to tennis from an injury or something.  Needless to say, he continued to get better, and I stayed average at best.  Since no one is claiming the rights to the blog,  I guess it is fair for me to throw in my 2 cents worth of accomplishments over the years.

Anyhow, seeing Dallas have only one team, I was hoping to see them pull it off against Houston.   The 3.5s did their part.  But that was no surprise, as those two guys were the bedrock of our 3.5 40+ National team, and a tough pair to beat.

Given all the debate over Kelly and getting him back to 4.5, I was surprised to see him not even make the trip.  ( My Bad.  I stand corrected -- He made the trip and played the first match against Austin.  I told you I was just using Tennis Link and out of the loop.  I jumped straight to the final and straight to conclusions.  -- given further credence to the following statement....)  But given Picket’s and Freeman’s relationship over the years, it doesn’t surprise  me, as Dallas has had teams that have gone the past 3 years.   I guess Freeman was in the rotation this year, and it really didn’t matter who Dallas had.  (Perhaps Joel was making a statement not playing Kelly??)

In terms of 40+, I'm still waiting for the big match ups at 4.0 with Wiley and McHugh.  At 4.5, I was shocked to see Rossouw lose to Brookhaven but appears Durten had to retire.  I didn’t realized his cohort in crime, Brandon, was on the opposing team.  That is drama in and of itself (at least on paper).  But I refrain to go there.   Sweeney and Wagner don’t go after it for another several weeks, so will refrain from making any guesses there.

I guess I should mention 3.5, but that has become pretty boring.  Bender has no challenge getting out of City and will be surprised if they are tested at Sectionals.  I'm not sure how much fulfillment there will be for some of those guys in their quest for Nationals, as several of those players have been there before at 3.0 and 3.5.  From what I hear, it is also back in Tuscon, so they miss out on the luxurious LaQuinta Resort in Palm Springs.

Then there is Mixed to cover, but I don’t want to lose my buzz………

In other news….Kelly is a 4.5 !!!!   Does anyone really f**ing
care???

I could go off on how the system is broke, but I am waiting for Pickett to take me to MiCocina for some Mamba Taxis before I tackle that one.

  1. You need to get your facts straight. Kelley made the trip and won his match. Reiman and Hix don't beat Kelly and Kiron, not even close. And yes the system is flawed, but was corrected.

    1. the system is hardly corrected. Whether Kelly should have been "manually" bumped to a 5.0 can be debated I suppose, but it is absolutely a fact that the current algorithm needs to be tweaked so that the tankers can not continue to abuse it.

    2. You are right. My bad. Presumptuous of me just jumping to the final. Like I said, limited patience in going through Tennis Link and no longer in the loop.

Never said Reiman and Hix beat Kelly and Kiron, but it would have been a much better match to watch than Reiman and Resteiner.

The system is flawed, and always will be.

But since you are obviously better than this than I am, CONGRATULATIONS!!! - You can take over the blog!!

    3. Don't put too much stock into some anon that expects you to know everything and everybody. You are the only blog contributor. Why does anyone expect a guy who plays 3.5 to know anything about 4.5 is ridiculous.

We need a 4.5 contributor now that Rossouw is in exile.

  2. The real question is where was Kelly for the final? and why?

    ReplyDelete
  3. As Kobe Bryant once said, " I wish we knew." Anyone know why he was MIA???

    ReplyDelete
  4. heard Kelly was in Memphis wrapping his arms around Querrey and Young consoling on their craptastic showing in Davis Cup, then proceeded to work out with them to prepare for the tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  5. He was in Memphis watching the matches bec a friend of his is a hitting partner of Donald Young. Hey, if I was given free tickets and got to hit w those guys for a bit I would go too. Maybe he will stay there and never come back. I am sure Memphis tennis not quite as talented as here.

  6. Nobody on this blog cares where he is or who he hits with. Stick to something that is important like another way to rid this guy of playing tennis in Dallas.

  7. Maybe we can test him for PEDS and get him disqualified!!!!

  8. Kelly and Elvis are playing doubles at the Graceland Open

  9. So a few competitive matches still to be played at 4.0 before the 4 team round-robin playoffs. Who's looking strongest out of: McKinney/Peterson, Greenhill/Kayser, Brookhaven/Tarangiloi, HighPoint/Wiley,, CC/McHugh, and TBar/Beckner? One thing is certain, matches will be played this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hopefully that includes some make-up matches as well. Some teams are two matches behind.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Why is there a five week gap between the end of the season and the play-offs?

    ReplyDelete
  12. After what was done to Kelly and Jean Nguyen in total manipulation of their NTRP computer ratings because of a personal vendetta, there is no way to be sure ANY rating is correct and factual.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Personal vendetta?? Really? That Oak Creek team clearly tanked all Fall season. They brought it on themselves.
What is amazing is that the rating system is not setup to detect it..

      Delete
  13. Clearly tanked?? I don't think that was a roster to win the Fall league. Hence the word "Fall" league. It's for fun and nothing else. Give up the Mike Kelly talk. He is almost 50 and I'm tired of reading about his old butt. He will be playing seniors soon. Move on.

    ReplyDelete
  14. He didn't play the final because he had to get back to Dallas so he could play (and lose) his 8.0 mixed match for Greenhill/Zackary. There's only a couple of weeks left, and he needs a couple of matches to qualify for playoffs. You all know he prefers to dominate 3.5 and 4.0 women in mixed versus playing men's, where there's a larger chance he will lose at the Sectional or National level.

    1. Completely inaccurate chronology. Once again showing your willingness to post things that are wrong and you have no knowledge of.

  15. Lol... No chance to win at men's sectionals or nationals??? Hilarious. I would rather have nobody in ONE match for all the marbles than Kelly. Love him or hate him he is absolutely clutch, period.

    ReplyDelete
  16. "Larger chance" is not the same as "no chance." You should probably re-read the post above and try again.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ok, will try again. I decided to look into his "larger chance statement" to lose by playing mens so I researched his history. The last time he took men's 4.5 serious he got his team to nationals. He has not lost a trilevel match in two years, including winning nationals. I also looked at combo last two years in which he is undefeated as well. I compared this to all his mixed matches, only counting sectionals and nationals (w/ one national event he has yet to play it seems). Including sectionals and nationals in both events he is 49-3 and no losses when team in finals of either sectionsl or Nationals. Men's winning % at sectional or national level is 94.7 %, mixed winning % at sectional or national level is 98.4. So yes, he has a "larger chance" of losing at men's.

Your timeline is absolutely wrong so quit posting what you think happened. People on this blog now ripping a guy because he prefers mixed bec when he plays men's sectionals or nationals he has a better chance of losing??? !!! But when he does play men's you wished he wouldn't???!!! Are his TCD matches going to be scrutinized next? Wow!

  18. Agreed, to the poster who has no clue on Kelley or his "schedule". He was out of town watching tennis Saturday and Sunday and actually had dinner w Donald Young and Mardy Fish. Would be a good idea to get facts straight and not blog on hate and what you think happened. That kind of thinking has already shown it can be appealed.

  19. Who cares? 8,0 mixed a joke. When he goes at 9.0 then I will be impressed. He will then have been at EVERY level. Until then, not impressed.

  20. Kelly played 9.0 Mixed Nationals in 2007. Impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not impressed until he wins cities or sectionals at 5.0

  22. Not impressed until he wins the Dallas Challenger wildcard draw and beats Alex Bogomolov in the first round in straights. Then I'll be impressed.

  23. To 4:08 pm:
Looked up just for grins to see if he ever went to mens sectionals in 5.0. He did in 2007 on greenhill team in which he played w Bartzen. Lol he beat Brookhaven there as well. He did win cities and went to sectionals at 5.0. Not a fan of his but the guy has been to sectionals or nationals at EVERY level he has played and won in every final he has played to advance. Pretty damned impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What a freakin waste of time lookin that crap up! When he wins at the open level then get back to me then. He will NEVER win there and he wouldn't even win a league match in the open level. Simply just a decent recreational player. Those are a dime a dozen and in every major city in the US!

    ReplyDelete
  25. 4:38 poster - that is what you call a "decent rec player"? someone that has been to numerous sectionals and nationals in men and mixed - as a 4.5 & as a 5.0. If that is a "decent rec player", than what are you??

    ReplyDelete
  26. I am open, played in college and have a division I resume. Not wasting my time w 8.0, 9.0 and leagues. Not even sure why people blog about a "country club " level player. If he played his age division of 45/50 he would get slaughtered as these guys are tournament tested and actually played in college. Any local 5.5 or teaching pro would make this guy look like the just above average player he is.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Let me get this straight. You're an open level players with a D1 resume. You don't waste your time with 8.0, 9.0 or leagues at all. But you creep on a blog exclusively devoted to local usta leagues? Sounds like you have plenty of time to waste.

  27. Not creeping idiot. Someone on a san Antonio team told me this guy from Dallas was supposed to be the real deal so I googled his name and results and I see no open tourneys. Just leagues. No offense but there are 200,000 league players that can't hang w open players.

  30. What's to talk about? Which 4.0 team is going to win? Damn near the whole opening rant about ( rhymes w Belly). If you don't want to talk about it don't open up the blog w it. Or we could talk about mchugh not making Tri. Yep, good try. Maybe next time. Seems like a deep team. 3.5 and 4.0 solid. Strong 4.5"s. will be a contender for years to come. Great work ethic. Leaders of men. Good clubhouse comraderie. They play as a unit. None of them have won anything but they have potential. Good bunch of guys. No jerks like K***y on that team. Great captain. One problem, will never beat ( rhymes w Jelley). Doesn't matter , it's not if you win or lose, it's how you play the game. " Kum by yah my lord, Kum Ba ya........ " oh lord, Kum Ba yah"

  36. You want to help the tanking issue then eliminate Fall scores from counting towards a rating. The playoffs are still following the spring so who cares what happens in the Fall. if someone is going to tank they will need to do it in the Spring and at least wasting 1 year tp hopefully get back.

Right now, guys win in the Spring, lose in the Fall and get back to their desired rating.

Eliminate the Fall ratings to start.

    1. Why can't everyone just play tennis? Are we really back on this?

      Delete
    2. I heard the DTA is doing something about it. With the assistance of some very concerned players and captains, they are turning over anyone who beats those concerned players and captains over to Todd Reed. Todd will then use the power of the keyboard to change it so those concerned players and captains can take their very ugly mixed partners and get beat at sectionals mixed instead of city mixed playoffs.

      Delete
  37. That Is spot on. The DTA lost round one but rest assured those players and captains tired of losing will continue to rid " unnamed player" of 4.5. In the meantime, play in ft worth w a million people on roster and hope to win until backup plan #2 takes effect. Not fair unnamed player been to nats 9 times while others none, something must be done.

  38. 4,0 play-off spots:
    Flight A: Greenhill/Kayser and winner of Brookhaven/Tarangioli and McKinney/Peterson
Flight B: High Point/Wiley and TBar unless Canyon Creek can beat High Point

    Predictions???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. High Point will lose 3 - 2 to CC, and they will both make the playoffs. The grand scheme will play out as designed, when in the deciding match, Sampson (a CC plant currently playing for Wiley) will throw his line so that CC can take the win.

      Delete
    2. Isn't there a match both must play before they play each other? I think you should be worried about that one before you worry about the one after it.

      Delete
    3. HP easily beats McKinney/Landrum and is ensured a play-off spot.
Brookhaven statistically alive, but barely. If CC wins out, they make the playoffs.
