Not much time to do an elaborate post here but got tired of scrolling down 300 + comments to see whats been posted.  Actually took me a week to figure out and find the "Load More" option.  And heck, I'm a blog contributor.  Must have been heck for the common Anon out there.

Anyhow, ratings should be out Monday with lots to talk about.  Also thought would try a new look with the blog.  Feel free to say you like or dislike.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving day.  We all have plenty to be thankful for.

    Change it back.

  2. I like the new format. Looks clean. I can't wait to see everyone yell and scream about people who don't get bumped.

  3. Who should be bumped to yell and scream about?

  4. It's different so everyone will hate it, or not, or who cares. Most of the big bumps were at year end but hope springs eternal, particularly for those who don't do so well in the fall. You want to know who's worried look at their results.

  6. Mike kelly is 5.0
biggest travesty is the old guys who have to play 4.5 all over 60
    Buddy Jordan
    Renee Grossman (he's 75)
    Jim Walters
    Dick Theimer,
    Mike Gendron

  7. Absolute joke moving mike Kelly to 5.0! Obviously not based on his results but rather on a bunch of whiners like Tom Jun, Brandon Myers and Russo. Total manual override of the rating system. Funny none of the ft worth team headed up by Russo got moved up. Too many petitions and people in the ear of DTA pres and they folded under the pressure. Brookhaven members, board members and canyon creek members will be rejoicing for a long time. Almost as long as it will take for Dallas to get back to a national event w out Kelley. There were countless players who had better records than he did and stayed 4.5 and in some cases got moved DOWN. Unbelievable. Just goes to show that if enough people whine and cry so that they want a chance to win too the Texas section will listen and cave in. Kelley got screwed. Took 4 years to get him bumped up so those heading that charge should rejoice! You now have a chance to win.

  8. Not only did Kelley go to 5.0 he went to a bench mark 5.0. Wow! I wonder how he went 7 and 42 in the past 3 years in men's 4.5 and got benchmarked at 5.0???!!! Obviously there was a lot of insider fanagaling going on inside the DTA. I venture to say this is an unprecented move. If he were to win a few matches at 5.0 he would go to 5.5 pretty easy. Must be a lot of haters toward him.

    1. I am sure this had nothing to do with MK destroying everyone in 8.0 and 9.0 the past few years, his tanking finally caught up on him. Now get the rest, even though the ratings are an utter joke this year from what I have seen. Guys going 18-2 and 15-1 including 7-1 and 5-0 at Sectional level across two brackets and not getting bump but going 2-2 gets you bumped.

    2. Mixed doesn't count

  9. You have got to be kidding right? Yes I have contacted Todd Reed and highlighted the Tankers by name! Here and the fake scores posted in Houston! It is obvious and it is wrong. You cannot try to defend them. Why don't you post your name behind your posts? Because you are a coward and realize that you are condoning cheating and don't want to stand behind your "position" flimsy as it may be. You can throw all the rocks you want at me (I have no idea who else has also brought this BS to the attention of the USTA) but I am very happy that finally something is being done. MK, Jean Nguyen etc have been making the usta ratings system look like a joke. Well no more. Congrats to Todd Reed and the usta for getting it right!

    1. And how many of those hypocrites are on your roster? I would be embarrassed to admit I was the city's biggest tattle tale. Who died and made you the conscience of Dallas Tennis? You make your teams out of Ft. Worth and load it with known tankers and then you cry about it... The hypocrisy of of Canyon Creekers know no bounds.

    2. Why don't you tell us all of the players you highlighted to Todd Reed? I bet you lost your lunch money a lot at school.

I'm serious, I want to know if was tattled on too. I can't be the only one wondering if you became a new visual verifier. For those of us that have been around, ratings used to be by visual verifier and now we have you. Just curious who all you pointed out to Todd.

    3. That is crazy. Pretty sure that match was never played or it only took 30 minutes for all 4 matches to complete.

    4. Fellas... I don't read your blog that often, but this thread involving our team was brought to my attention regarding our double defaults recently. We had some rain-outs and decided we didn't want to make them up... that the Fall Season was over. Whether we should record anything or not, I am not sure. I will contact Todd & Tosha for clarification. All I have been told in the past is that 6-0, 6-0 matches don't count in the ratings. They are an anomalie and as a result are thrown out. As a result, we were just making it fair between both teams by giving each other 2 lines and calling the match even and the Fall Season over. We don't have any tournaments that have direct entries from the Fall Winners, so many times we fade out at the end of the season and call it quits. We had entertained the idea of playing some make-ups in December, but decided against, because everyone just wanted a break. To my knowledge we didn't affect anything and had no intentions too. Happy Holidays & Best to you, Craig

    5. Fellas... I do not read your blog often, but this situation regarding my team and the scores entered was brought to my attention. I take ownership of them. I have been told that 6-0, 6-0 matches do not count for nor affect ratings. After a couple rain-outs and the cold weather, we simply decided against make-ups, and just wanted to give both teams 2 matches each and call it quits. Our Fall Season in Houston has no direct entry to a Spring or Summer tournament, so some times we just fade out and call it quits. The 10.31 match in question, should look like the last one of the season on tennis link where each team has 2 defaults, which the system automatically posts 6-0, 6-0. However, the system didn't allow me to correct it. I talk with Tosha often and know Todd Reed as well, so I will bring it to their attention and ask how we should close out any unplayed Fall matches. Fellas... At my age their is no motivation to go any higher... heck I'm barely hanging in 5.0 now, and I'm not a tanker and do not run my teams that way. Speaking for myself, I'm going to try to play as high as I can in the USTA Leagues until I naturally come back down, which will be one day very soon my friends with all of these young flat-bellies on our tails :)

  12. This is on the DTA.org website. Deadline is now 12/18 for 40+ rosters. Still a short window but much better.

    Captains,

It was brought to Brandon Myers’, VP of Leagues, attention that the reduced registration window was the primary concern for captains. In an effort to assist you with the later league start dates, please note that we have revised dates for the 2014 league season to offer captains and players more time. Please note revised dates:

12/18/2013 - Team Rosters on TENNIS LINK (originally 12/9/2013)
1/3/2014 - League schedules published on TENNIS LINK (originally 12/20/2013)

    1. That was not the primary concern. That was one of many and that one was secondary. This is total BS. Nice and magnanimous of them to give an extra five days.

    2. Am I reading this right? I am not 40 so this doesn't affect me but ratings come out today and you get a total of 16 days to get a roster. You wouldn't even know who was available until today. This is ridiculous. It looks like a ploy to punish certain captains and reward CC and BH that already have built in teams. It is still about 6 years until this affects me.

    1. He is just an embarrassment to Dallas tennis. I used to think the whole Canyon Creek whining thing was just the women; now it is official that the men have vaginas too.

  14. It is very simple people. Canyon Weak and Hookhaven (and others like Gleneagles) knew they would win nothing as long as Kelley was a 4.5. The DTA sent a message to Kelly and Pickett w an unjustified bump up of Kelley to a 5.0 benchmark. His results did not get him moved up. Just the fact of other teams whining that he was in the way in Dallas knowing when he wanted he would win. Cc led the way w the bitchin w Russo driving it. He is now complaining about Houston. Maybe he should just be given a trophy or at least move down to 4.0 where he should be. Not sure he or his team wins there either at the national level. Eventually he will complain enough where he might get a shot to advance once everyone else is deemed out of level if he can't beat them. What a shame reed and co caved in to him.

    2. The great thing about this blog is that you get to write with out checking any FACTS!!!!! For those of you tanking like MK yes you too will be bumped. This was a message that simply states.....tank and others will ASK those in charge to look into. If you think Rossow got MK bumped you all are so wrong.... Rossow had to take a number to register his complaint then when you look at his scores you will understand why MK AND OTHERS got bumped. Morale of story is that hopefully cheaters never prosper......they do get caught.

      Delete
  15. Should you be MAD if you put together a team just to tank. It was so Obvious, loosing to a 4.0 bump up and not even trying. SILLY! We play to have fun and compete, not waste our time. Nobody get's paid to play so play your level and have fun!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Sad thing is the ft worth team he led still couldn't win w tankers and not even playing in Dallas. After that he decided it was best to go after players he couldn't beat. Funny thing is CC people are distancing themselves from Russo and his antics. Guess trying to win is that important, although one obstacle in Kelley is now gone. Better find a new player to trash now.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Why would russow bring Houston into this and denigrate them too??? Who will he criticize and tattle tale on next ? Answer: the next player or team that is a threat. Him and Myers should get everyone out and just play w themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I for one applaud Roussow and his efforts to stop the most blatant of the cheaters. There is always going to be people out there that afraid to compete at the level that they should, but until enough people stand up to the tankers nothing will change. Kudo's to Todd Reed and the folks in Austin for finally doing the right thing!

  19. Rossouw = Commissar of Dallas NTRP. Comrade Rossouw, can you please dole out the NTRP ratings as your wise and all knowing Canyon Creek Party sees fit? We are certain that the Ministry of Ratings will continue to happily use their citizen 'see tanking tattle tanking' squad.

If anyone sees such heinous behavior at clubs outside of Canyon Creek, please call 666-ROS-SOUW. Commissar Rossouw will ensure anyone not on his truth squad will get the rating he thinks they deserve.

    1. Absolutely hilarious but sadly true. The clubs should just have playoffs w in themselves. That way they can restrict outsiders they can't beat. Then all the crook haven members can vote on who gets to advance every year. If you keep the clubs from winning and/or have tried to go to Cowtown and lost in sectionals there as well, you just pay your way to nationals. That way everyone happy. Spread the success around to make it fair to all. Teach little Johnny that everybody wins!

    1. ^^^ This! When people complain to get individuals tossed, it leaves a lot of potential for abuse. Especially when Marc has several teammates that are just as guilty as Kelly. Considering the DTA is full of Canyon Creek and Brookhaven people; they are the ones that would go to Todd Reed. Those clubs have axes to grind with several players and captains in Dallas.

    2. Well said ^^^^^

  21. A lot of anger on this thread. A very vocal minority that thinks Kelley deserves a 4.5 rating.
There is nobody in men's league that would defend they way he games the system (outside of a few teammates). And I'm not even sure his teammates would defend him with such anger.

Is this one of his mixed partners that now has a broken heart?

Maybe the computer has gotten smart and now disregards "outlier" results, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  22. And Marc is getting the blame for Mike Kelly's 5.0 rating because......?? Marc has no influence over a 100% computer-based system and neither does the DTA or Brandon Myers. I'm sure the DTA could ban him from 4.5 league play if they wanted to. But Austin makes new ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hmmmmm... A very objective opinion from Corey. What a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Corey if u really believe there was no outside influence in Kelley's bump up you are either ignorant or under gunpoint from Russo to type that crap. Absolutely 100% manual override of the computer from constant complaining for 3 years. Please Corey, spare us your opinion and stick to facts.

So let me get this straight. It is a FACT that this is a manual override but Corey saying rankings are computer-based is opinion? Holy cow man, what world do you live in??? Is there an O by Kelley's ranking that stands for override?

      Delete
    2. There is not an O by Kelly's name, there is a B by Kelly's name - which stands for B-slapped by Russow

      Delete
  25. So, what happens next year if, I mean when Kelly goes 0-16. Will he get bumped back down or will he stay a 5.0. Then we will know if there is an override button. And stop complaining about Marc. He finally got rid of Kelly and he'a teams still won't win.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great point on both. Russo did get rid of Kelly but his teams still a non factor. When Kelly goes o for whatever and doesn't get moved down Austin will have to explain why. Believe me they are dreading this. Do you realize had he been taking men's seriously and most likely gone undefeated the past couple years he would be a 5.5 based on their assumption. If he is a 5.0 at 6-42 in men's last few years what is he at 48-0

    ReplyDelete
  27. I looked into his mixed record last 4 years and the Texas section made an example out of him using results other than men's, I promise you that. He hasn't lost a combo or Tri level match in two years. He was 102-4 in mixed last 4 years ( one of those losses a match that was decided already and the other a no ad set in the dark instead of regular scoring). 3 national events in a calendar year also didn't help. I am just an observer but I am not sure there are any 5.0's and very few 5.5's that could be placed in his same position and go 126-4 when you include mixed, trilevel and combo. So no, the computer rating for men did not get him, outside pressure from others did.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Bottom line the clubs and DTA board members got what they have been wanting a long time. The drinks will be flowing tonight all over town and in other Texas cities that Kelley is gone. Carpe diem. Also known as you better freakin win now while you have the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Rossou admits he is a tattle-teller, wonder if he will also admit he is a hypocrite?? Not too long ago, I remember Rossou having Kelly with his 4.5 rating ON his combo team.... Rossou would have more creditability with tennis peers if he wasn't such a hypocrite.. Funny Rossou started complaining AFTER Kelly won for him and wasn't on any of his teams anymore..

    1. Hey now, Rossouw was clear, he tattled on a lot of people on other teams. I wonder how many times he made it to lunch with his lunch money. You know that boy had to take some ass kickings as a kid. If you are tattling like this at. 55 to 60, you can only imagine what he was like at 12.

      Delete
  30. First of all, and I am pretty indifferent when it comes to Mike, his success, and his tanking, but it's KELLY. MIKE KELLY. Not Kelley. I can understand why some would misspell ROSSOUW, as Russo, Rossou, etc. But he posted above and the name is right there for your reference. At least try to get the names right.

Second, Mike is a 5.0, and should be rated a 5.0. Any speculation of "manual overrides" or some sort of covert operation or investigation that occurred is silly. And who cares anyway....he's a 5.0, and he gets to play at the appropriate level. I hope that he will actually play and try to succeed at that level too (and 9.0 mixed, etc.).

But, alas, I am sure he will be right back at 4.5 this time next year. Lather, rinse, repeat.

    1. That is pretty amusing. I don't think too many people care about Kelly being rated 5.0 but the thought of a grown man taking it upon himself to the NTRP Truther doesn't sit well.

    2. Above poster was spot on. Bec Kelly did not play for Russo he was out to get him. Had he played for him no doubt Russo would be his biggest supporter. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. Pretty unbelievable someone would tattle tale and do whatever it takes to get a guy moved up. He is not the only one however, there are many other cry babies involved as well. There were numerous letters and calls made complaining about him. Rather than do that they should have gotten someone to beat him.

      Delete
    3. I think the message being sent is pure and simple folks. TTA is watching. If you speak up enough on people that are blatantly cheating something will be done. In the case of MK please lets move on to someone lets obvious. His record in LEAGUE PLAY is basically a 3.5, yet for some incredible reason at Sectionals he is basically undefeated. Incredible

      Delete
    4. Doesn't sit well with who....the Overlords of High Point and Lifetime Tennis otherwise knows as a few shit-hole blind wannabe national champions that think getting past sectionals is the only real tennis being played in the nation. You give us a f-ing break and get off your high horse......if you really think supporting a manipulation of the system that these tankers have been pulling off for years is legitimizing our RECREATIONAL sport (correct me if I'm wrong, but no one pays you to play tennis to they?) ....then I'd have to wonder to what standards you live the rest of your personal or business lives. You think Rossouw is the only supporting the fact that some guys are finally going to have to play at an appropriate level, you are dead wrong. You shit for brains, panties in a wad jerk offs are in the minority......so just suck it up and try to enjoy playing the sport against other guys with similar skill sets, that is what the ratings system is supposed to accomplish now isn't?

      Delete
  32. The real problem is the DTA and Austin's hiding behind the veil of secrecy. You can't get a straight answer out of any of them, Brandon Meyers included, and the BS answers they do give just make them look stupid. If they really wanted to make an example out of Kelly they'd admit it was a manual adjustment and that might get people thinking. Kelly aside, no organization screws it's customers over more than the DTA.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Exactly - who cares what Kelly is rated. It is much more bothersome that Rossouw takes it upon himself to be the police of ratings for the entire city of Dallas AND Houston yet he doesn't police his own team.

    ReplyDelete
  34. So many post without names.... First of all, Corey, I have no beef with you but you're wrong in saying that ratings are 100% determined by a computer. And you're wrong in saying the DTA didn't have anything to do with Mike Kelly and Jean Nguyen getting bumped to 5.0. Have you ever worked for the DTA?? I have and the DTA can make an example out of whoever they want. I respect you as a Captain, player and man but have to disagree with your post. Plus, you actually post your name. :)) Most of the guys who played for Rossouw in Ft Worth and made it to Sectional Finals didn't get bumped up. Feldman, Eddie and Featherstone were bumped up because they played singles and beat great players at Sectionals and in tournaments. Feldman beat an Austin player who had never lost and Featherstone might have beaten the Houston guy in a superbreaker. The "system" will not change a rating if a guy works hard, beats great players, and deserve their chance at 5.0. Congrats to those guys... BUT the "system"/"people" can manually bump up players to a level that will not win an appeal. The bottom line is the DTA and everyone else in Texas knew where we were making a National run in 2014. And where we were going to make that National run...Dallas. And who pays the stipen for Dallas teams?? The DTA. The money the DTA gives to teams who make Nationals has been decreasing every year. So many teams from Dallas winning Sectionals and costing the DTA a ton of money. The men and women who won Tri level sectionals last year were from Dallas. 3.5 adult and over 40 men. Over 40- 4.0 men. 5.0 men. And I think 3.5 ladies. 8.0 mixed. These are just the teams I can think of off the top of my head. Trust me, this is about money, money and money. The DTA doesn't give a rats A$$ who wins Sectonals and they definitely can't afford to keep paying out all the stipens. Over 40 leagues have saved their a$$ financially. With this being said, Rossouw is the hypocrite who takes his teams to Ft Worth to make sure he can win and get paid more for Nationals. Yes, Ft Worth pays much more for their teams that make Nationals. Oh wait, Rossouw has never been to Nationals so he wouldn't know this fact. I guess you just go to win. You shouldn't have called out a great captain like Freeman. He will destroy you everytime unless you try your lack of skills at over 40 where you might have a chance. As for me, maybe I'll take the easy road and go to Ft Worth to save the DTA money. Brookhaven, Gleneagles and Canyon Creek have a legit chance to now make Sectionals in mens and mixed. I applaud the Canyon Creek peeps for wanting Rossouw OUT. Well haters you can stop texting me and asking my opinion on everything. I put it all on here and if I forgot anything then I'll post it later.

  37. Mike has played and succeeded at 9,0 nationals already and went to 5,0 sectionals the only year he played. That is not the issue. The issue is his record does not back up his getting bumped. Right or wrong, the facts are his rating was not a computer rating bump up, it was personal. He is now a benchmark 5,0 and won 9% of his 4.5 matches?. He definitely was made an example of. The right people complained long enough and the higher ups cratered to their demands. Many people are applauding Texas section bump up of Kelley but if you go by the raring system he got screwed.

  41. Joel - You were making a run at Nationals in 2014 by using the most blatant tanking methods (by multiple people). At least the top 3 tankers in all of Dallas, way beyond what you might even speculate about other people. They don't even try to hide what they are doing.

And you get mad/defensive when TTA does something about it? TTA did the same thing several years ago with the SA guys that named their 5.0 team - Danny 4.5 and tanked every match.

Why do you think you should be allowed to put together a team that cheats the system?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I hate to say this, but you have to cheat the system to win nationals. I had a solid 10 team in Kyle and Anna and they were beaten easily by a team from New York. It's was 5-0 in a matter of 15 minutes. Yes I'll admit Anna is a solid 4.5 and Kyle is a beast. He plays #1 for mid western and made it to the quarters of men's open at the cotton bowl last year and I believe he will have a good shot to win it this year. You can win cities and maybe even sectionals without out of level players, but to win the whole thing, you better have some players who are not rated correctly.

I know it sucks, but it's the truth. Don't worry, this season I'm doing member only teams and I will have fun weather we win or not.

I hate to admit but keep the class you have deserved in the years and get off the cheating bandwagon. You know darn well that the MK and others flat out cheat. I am confident you will field a team that will go to nationals and represent Dallas with class. People that blatantly cheat WILL GET CAUGHT!!!!! When you are a jerk (MK) and a cheat OTHERS and lots of others will cause the TTA to look into things. That is the case with Mike. Seriously now, his record in LEAGUE matches rates him a 4.0 yet in Sectionals, etc. he is almost rated a 5.5 if you do the LEGIT ratings. Move on Joel you have too much class to fight a battle that you know is wrong. Couple of the people you recruited are flat out cheats. Go after others, have class and represent Dallas well.

  42. What Joel said is absolutely spot on concerning the bump up ability of the computer. There WAS a manual override in Kelley's case. The DTA was also sick and tired of paying out for nationals as Kelly, Pickett and Alan have pretty muck bankrupt the stipends. What is most alarming in my opinion is the fact we have a snitcher in the ""kellygate" watchdog saga who is close to the DTA and all their cronies. This whole end of year rating business wreaks of pure politics. Senator russlow reported to PREZ his findings and got his puppets to write letters and petitions as well. As the old saying goes, "If you can't beat em or he won't join you, get em kicked out". Then get on a blog and say yep, I did it. Oh, but I did like him when he played for me. But now that he has knocked me out of trilevel, mixed and combo I am going to do a 180. Nice!

Btw, as more and more is coming out about getting rid of Kelly why would Tom Juhn try to petition Kelly out also? Gleneagles will never win anything. I guess it's monkey see, monkey do. The thing to do is jump on the bashing bandwagon.

    2. He may win Ft. Worth but he will get embarrassed at Sectionals. His 3.5s are bad; his 4.0s are meh and he is a 4.5. He put some great big roster together. If I was going to put a roster together that big, I would put at least a top player at their level on the roster.

  46. Do you people not realize the kind of DTA representation we have? It is horrific. It is a pure cult society made up of Brookhaven people and country club elitists. Then Kelly comes along and upsets their applecart by beating them time and time again. They cry foul and get him booted out bec he has been to nationals 7 times and that is not fair. Then they go to ft worth while serving on Dallas board bec they have a better chance. Absolutely pathetic is right. There will be people coming out of the woodwork to play this year knowing one big obstacle in Kelley is gone. This town is a laughing stock of tennis representation. It is ridiculous we have supposed DTA brass playing out of another city. What a proud organization running the circus. Totally embarrassing.

    1. You should feel bad for Russ and Brandon. Evidently Rossouw was going to air all their dirty laundry if they didn't play for him so they had no choice. You want to rally around something? Everyone stop playing for Rossouw. If you ever leave him he'll turn you in to Todd Reed so just don't ever get started!

      Delete
    2. I don't know Russ that well but I can say with 100% certainty Brandon is not an elitist. I appreciate your opinion Joel and I like that you posted your name. I don't know the facts on why Kelly is a 5.0 but he is. I think the amount of hoopla over him being a 5.0 is silly since he is obviously a legitimate 5.0. I'm also not saying it's impossible that the DTA had Kelly moved to 5.0 but if they did, it was likely to improve the integrity of the league which in turn would get more players to play. I do think it should be public knowledge if that was what happened though. Good luck to all this season!!!

  47. Anyone who plays for Russouw will be desperate, to be quite frank. However, there will be a bunch of guys who sign up to play with him. He has never been to nationals but his team will proclaim themselves the best. It will be interesting to see who signs up for him after he pretty much showed his true colors. It is absolutely clear that most people would run from him as captain, moreso after all this. There will also be others playing out of ft worth out of desperation to try and get to nationals. We will see whose ego takes over their dignity.

  48. There is no reason to play here, just take the Dallas money in and play elsewhere. The 40 and over is a cash cow for the DTA I assume. What I don't understand is why they would shun the people they are suppose to be benefitting from their leadership and say see ya. Gotta hand it to Sisk and Pickett, at least they support Dallas leagues knowing they will be tougher than ft worth and still playing here.

    ReplyDelete
  49. DTA president, Russ Johnson, and the DT VP of leagues, Brandon Myers - not even playing Tri out of your own market that you "represent" as Prez and VP but out of another market???? This is embarrassing... Word of warning - remember Russow supported Kelly's 4.5 rating when Kelly played for him - then tattle taled on Kelly when he was no longer on Russow's team. Now Russow has Johnson & Myers already not representing who they "represent"... what will be next...

    ReplyDelete
  50. As stated earlier, playing out of cowtown boosts morale and confidence, plus it cakewalks you to sectionals. Not sure why people are surprised though. Myers and Johnson dont win in Dallas either so why not try elsewhere. I just cannot believe other board members sit idly by while they take their team to fort worth. After he bagged on freeman and getting quite a bit of backlash for his antics, Russo best play in another city anyway. Do we really want this guy to be a rep for Dallas tennis? He was just smug enough to think he was gonna look like a hero for his tattling and policing. I think he is now realizing he doesn't have the backing he thought he had. His only hope was to brainwash Myers and Johnson .. Oh, and Todd reed

  53. There are obviously some strong opinions about Kelly and his bump. I thought it would be interesting to look at it strictly from a numbers standpoint. See http://computerratings.blogspot.com/2013/12/throwing-matches-in-usta-league-does-it.html

From a strictly numbers standpoint, based on what his dynamic rating was at the end of the year, he should have been a 4.5. Yes, other factors come into play for year-end calculations, but his playoff results weren't good enough to have his year-end rating that much higher IMHO.

However, if you look at the whole chart, one can see how some of the accusations about throwing matches to manage one's rating could be supported. Most players will have a variance in their match ratings of around 0.4 to 0.5. In this case we see a variance of a full 1.32. While there could be extenuating circumstances to explain such erratic play, it is very suspicious looking. And when you look deeper at which leagues had which results, one could argue the suspicions should be heightened.

So it would seem that the 5.0 rating would have had to be a manual override of some sort, but one can also see how a decision to do that would be supported by the data as if true, throwing matches is not in the spirit of the rules and the USTA's goal of promoting competitive play.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very interesting analysis. Does your model factor in mixed doubles or other matches that don't impact ratings (combo, etc.)? I'd like to see the variance within each classification (counts / doesn't count) and then the variance between them.

      Delete
    2. This analysis only looks at the leagues/matches that count towards his year-end rating. Since he played enough men's matches, mixed was not looked at. I can calculate what mixed-exclusive ratings would be as part of my offerings though.

But by league, the ranges are:

      2013 18+ Fall - 4.13 - 4.48 (these after 2012 year-end came out)
      2013 40+ 4.5+ - 4.07 - 4.71
      2013 18+ 4.5 - 3.69 - 4.96
      2013 18+ 5.0+ - 4.08 - 4.70
      2014 18+ Fall - 3.64 - 4.15 (these before 2013 year-end came out)

      Delete
    3. Don't know who the blogger is that posted the info but looks as if this wreaks of a manual override. Looks like russow got what he wanted.

      Delete
    4. Remove Mike K and Marc R. from the conversation and take a look at it from a pure numbers perspective. If you have a variance that is that far out of whack and there are no plausible extenuating circumstances to explain away that variance, shouldn't there be a manual mechanism for the USTA(when this type of variance is flagged) or something in the algorithm that would bump a player?

      Delete
    5. There could be and probably should be. Golf handicaps address similar issues by using your best 10 results from your last 20. Something similar could be done with match results. Or simply look for out of whack results and ignore them.

The challenge is that unlike golf, there are 1 or 3 other players involved and a bad/low result for one is going to affect the others ratings too, e.g. the winner when someone throws a match is going to get a very high rating for that match. So determining which are the matches to ignore can be tricky as it depends on the perspective you look at it from.

      Delete
    6. The analysis really only touches on the core problem. Sure Kelly's variance was high in Men's matches where he decided when he wanted to win and when he wanted to lose (and the level of his opponent(s) didn't matter). Check his variance in Mixed matches where he went 34-1. It will be quite low - but at a substantially higher level than his men's rating.

      Delete
    7. Thank you. Hate to admit but first answer worth acknowledging. No personal feelings just pure numbers.

Also, if you don't like the tattle-tale and constant bitching from CC, be sure and get your best lineups out against them when you play. They got Kelly bumped because he kept beating them, now they'll have to get half of Dallas bumped to win anything.

When all you have to do is complain and a guy gets booted, everyone should be concerned. CC could theoretically collude w Myers and Lame duck pres Johnson to discard whoever they want. That is absolutely shameful and should be looked at. But again , all the members of the board are Brookhaven people so it does no good. What is even more shocking is nobody really polices these types of moves and there are no checks and balances. If you win all the time YOU could be next.

  77. I guess the statistical analysis of the person in question was not good enough. Let people tank so the computer is 100% the reason people stay and go. Gosh then the blog would be all over why the COMPUTER is bumping/keeping someone at a level. I think the human element with consideration to "un normal" swings should not be considered. Great ideas all. Tank your matches so that you can only try for the important matches.

A few other 5.0 caliber players with an obvious history of tanking and records that can't justify 5.0, being manually placed at 5.0. Appears to me that they're being lenient on granting appeals, in the absence of evidence that players are not competing in good faith. This is progress - but they should use a distinct rating designation for these manual modifications, perhaps T.
