2014 Tri-Level Preview

Looks like outside of Alzuro, there is no longer an interest in the Junior Tri.  They should probably just eliminate it all together given last year’s Sectionals was the best of 3 matches played against 2 teams (Dallas and SETX).  Why bother, and looks like that will be the case this year since Dallas has no teams.

So the pursuit of real Tri -Level

First, to clarify why there is such a pursuit of putting together a team that can advance.  As other tournaments, the winner of City goes on to play Sectionals.  As far as the USTA and ratings are concerned, that is it.  It is a misconceived perception that Tri Level goes to a USTA Sanctioned National event.  IT DOES NOT.  That is why you will never find anything in tennislink beyond Sectionals for Tri Level.

There is a National event, but it is sponsored and run by the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, completely independent and outside of the USTA, called the Tri-Level Invitational Championships.  Well, I say independent.  Acutally, the players are chosen by taking the Sectional winners from the  USTA Tri-Level Tournament, and our local Section helps support the team and their registration.  But it is not sanctioned, and it does not count towards ratings.

Tom Fey, IWTG’s Tennis Director, runs the tournament and does a fabulous job.  He sponsors the event during the final weekend of the BNP Paribas Open, and provides players with tickets to the Quarters, Semis, and Finals of the BNP Paribas matches.  Nice little perk.  The winner is then acknowledged center court in-between matches if network scheduling allows (which is not always the case).  This is IWTG’s way of marketing directly to the top recreational tennis players around the country, and saying thanks for being a part of the game.  Now you see why teams are vying to win this thing?

Now that that is clear, who will be going and representing Dallas?

In prior years, Dallas typically would have their 2 strongest teams go, as Fort Worth Tri-Level was used as an outlet to have another Dallas team make.  This year, Dallas has all of their guns playing locally.  Dallas typically gets a Wild-Card so that means the two top teams will go.  Or does it?

From the looks of it, I have to give nod to Pickett and Le for having the 2 strongest rosters.  However, what happens if they land in the same flight?

From my understanding and past discussions with the DTA, it is a blind draw when it comes to tournaments like this.  You could possibly have a flight that has Le, Pickett, Sisk and McHugh all in one flight.  I would say those are the top 4 teams, and it would be an injustice to the tournament to have them all flighted together.   However, it could happen.

What it does do is open the door for teams playing out of Fort Worth.  Looks like Pickett was going to initially go that route (registering for a team) but elected to play Dallas.  Le has also done so in the past, but has decided to go head-to-head in the Dallas tournament.  Fort Worth’s tournament isn’t until December, so plenty of time to get a roster together if you want to make a trip to Houston for Sectionals.

That leads me to my next question, will it matter who wins Dallas given the strength of Freeman’s 4.0s and 4.5s ?  Personally, I still like Dallas’s chance because I think our city has stronger 3.5s, and like it or not, that is typically the determining line.  4.5 and 4.0 is so competitive and close, anything can happen and usually wins come down to 3rd set breakers.  With 3.5 secured, it makes a tri-level win much easier.

Those our my thoughts.  What are yours?

  1. Each of the top teams has strengths ands weaknesses at different levels. Pickett has Kelly, which is a great starting point, but his 4.0s are suspect. Le has the best balanced team. McHugh has good balance but just a half stamp back on the talent. Should make for a fun event. And if the DTA is listening, Pickett and Le will have the best teams so don't screw this thing up.

    1. meaning what on DTA screwing up?

    2. They are trying to say that they should be put in opposite flights so they can both make the finals and get a trip to sectionals if there is the usual wildcard for Dallas. Random draw of teams should be done with captains allowed to watch the draw publically. There are no seeds.

  2. Pickett team wins 4.5 line, LE wins 3.5 and 4.0. My money on LE to win 2-1

  3. Le wins 4.0. Pickett wins 3.5 and 4.5 is a tossup. Pickett will be missing Jason Moore.

    1. Not having Moore does hurt but he did lose a match at sectionals, not having Kelly will kill them. Looking at last year looks like he won every city, sectional and national match he played.BTW, what is junior Tri????

    2. Junior Tri is the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 Tri-Level. It only advances to Sectionals. The winner does not get to go to Indian Wells. In prior years, it would draw 5 or 6 teams.

  6. Last year Pickett was a lock at 4.5 & 3.5 but not now. You don't ever bet against Kelly but without Moore it will be a lot tougher. Le should win the 4.0 line unless he gets talked into playing the wrong guys.

  7. I think LE will win this year. At some point w the law of averages Kelley will have a bad match. The streak he is on is pretty amazing but has to come to an end and I think this will be when it is broken. LE 4.5 team is unbeatable.

    2. This doesn't count towards your ranking, Kelly won't get beat. His team may, but he won't.

    3. Negatory - Tri-level counts towards year-end ranking.

    4. That would be new. Never counted before.

    5. Counts this year. You should not be able to play the year after you win it all.

      Delete
    6. Tri-level has always counted. It is combo that hasn't counted since you are having players at 2 different levels play together. In tri-level, each doubles pair is at the same level playing the same level, thus the computer picks it up in the ratings.

  13. Not sure who win last year. But Le or Sisk win this year. You people think Kelley will go undefeated at trilevel this year, just like last year, just like combo last year, just like combo this year, just like 18 and over mixed, just like 40 and over mixed. No way he can go 6 leagues w out dropping a match. Go Sisk!

  14. I am not sure how Pickett trilevel team will fare as his best 4.5s Kelly, Takashi, and Hai can't seem to win any of there matches this season. They must be in really bad form.

    2. The DTA definitely has their friends and enemies list. I have to believe both are on the enemies list.

      Delete
    3. Why would they dislike Le?. He has not won anything?

      Delete
    4. You're right. It is the Texas Section that doesn't like Le. Having players make up scores at Sectionals and having another player play under someone else's name doesn't set well with Tosha and Todd.

      Delete
    5. Why then would he be allowed to enter a team again?

      Delete
  20. Didn't Pickett win Tri Level Nationals last year?? Why would the DTA not want him representing Dallas and Texas? He has the best chance to take down Houston with the lock at 4.5. I agree Dallas will be tough because he has to qualify so many players. I never understand why Pickett has such huge rosters. I do think Le takes it this year but Pickett would do better at Sectionals and Nationals. Le has much better "subs" than Pickett. The large roster will cost him a match in a tough Dallas tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The question to ask is who can beat Houston. The DTA knows only Le or Pickett has a chance so why put them in the same flight. If the DTA hates Pickett then he will draw Le in flight play. If the DTA wants Dallas to beat Houston then they will have Le and Pickett in different flights. Pretty easy. We will find out soon.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Point well taken. If Pickett plays with a few less guys he wins it all again. Le can win cities but going to sectionals w out a lockdown player like Kelley will not work out too well. Pickett just trying to have fun and get everyone qualified. I personally think Kelley should bow out and cut the 4.5 roster down. He has won it once, what a jerk move to take a roster spot.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think Joel asked him to play. Joel is the one with the big team. Wouldn't Joel be the jerk that invited everyone to be on his team.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No, there are plenty of other players that have not been to nationals that should at least have a chance to go. Kelley should have declined to play.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nationals without Kelly??? Let other guys go??? How do you beat Houston without a Paul Kiron or Mike Kelly??? Le has a shot at the 4.5 line but no lock. Freeman has been knocked out by a Pickett influenced team for 3 years. I doubt he is just going to give to Dallas. I do know from the past that Freeman and Pickett are good friends. Freeman basically laughs at the competition from Dallas if Pickett or Le aren't involved.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why would he care about Le? He didn't have much problem this summer.

      Delete
  26. I am not saying let Freeman have it. Just saying take another 4.5 who can replace Kelley that still gives u a chance. He has gone to Indian wells and won it. He is not the only one in the area that gives u the best chance.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Is this Freeman or Le? I can't believe anyone would be this pathetic. If there are better players, then get them, beat Kelly and quit whining.

  27. I thought you could only have 12 players on a tri-level roster. Have the teams have more. Is that wrong? Maybe they can take Kelly off the roster.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If the limit is 12 Kelley should take himself off, but he is too arrogant

    ReplyDelete

    1. You may be right. It has to be Kelly talking about himself. Nobody could be this infatuated. He is probably out here jerking everyone's chain to see his own name.

      Delete
  29. This is idiotic. Why would anyone pull their best player? As for giving everyone else a chance to go to nationals, they can't get there without Kelly anyway. He's taken seasons off in the past. Did you go to nationals that season?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ironically, the only year he took men's league serious his team went to nationals. In the case of trilevel I think if you win it one year you should have to sit out the next.

      Delete
    2. Yes our trilevel team went to Nationals a couple years ago when Kelly didnt play.

And all this talk about Kelly not playing because he has been there before and Joel should find someone else to replace him? Are you serious. Joel is only here to win and that is what he should be doing. If he is friends with Kelly and he is available to play for him then he should play him, period. Joel has a great 4.5 line and props to him for recruiting those guys.

Dallas Trilevel will be a battle this year and very competitive. Im sure a few key matches will come down to 3rd set breakers on a deciding line.

Lastly, please stop with Kelly obsession. There is no point. Im sure it is probably 1 person, maybe 2. You obsessing on this blog day after day is not going to change anything. You obviously like the blog because you post almost daily on it, well all this Kelly talk is only killing it and less people will even pay attention to it because of all the Kelly non sense.

Just one man's opinion but looks to me like Pickett dominates Le at 4.5, 4.0 is a toss up Picketts 4.0s Hsu and Justiss appear to be a little stronger than Le's 4.0s of Weymer, Newman and Glasgow. At 3.5 Le has Pak and nobody else and Picketts guys look to be much stonger.

    5. I wouldn't expect anything until after the "roster deadline" of November 10 has passed. First, there should be no roster deadline (what is injury occurs). I think the set-up was better before (as a league not a championship) then a championship only after the flights are played.

    2. Hello All,
In response to the numerous inquiries regarding the TRI schedule, we will have that out soon. We are currently running literally millions of scenarios in which the Pickett team has the hardest path to winning. Possible ideas are chaining his players to the back fence or hanging steaks around Kelley's waste and releasing hungry lions during the point. Another idea was to make him play w his 3.5 female mixed partner but we felt that was not enough of an edge for his opponents. Please be patient as these schedules will be out by this weekend.
      Sincerely,

My 8.0 partner and I have played some 9.0 tournaments. We usually get beat in 3 sets. Not to many wins, but it's a lot of fun. I think mike plays 8.0 because I do. I think he likes playing on my teams because we always have a great team and we have a lot of fun. Our teams practice together and actually enjoy each others company. We except everyone for who they are and what they can do for the team.
We have talked about next year and I think we are going 9.0. As one blogger put it, "so brookhaven and canyon creek have a chance". Brookhaven is always tough and I like and respect Brad for the teams he has put together.

  74. Interesting draws. I know Chavez and Perez were handpicked to dethrone Kelley last year and were even coached on how to do so. How did that work out? Who is the one that dethrones Pickett this year?

  75. How is Kern a 4.5 now? Is the USTA granting every appeal made?

  77. I'd focus on winning Dallas before I worried about Houston. 99% of this blog won't need to worry about Houston anyway.

  78. I got an e-mail from the DTA for 40s Mixed. They are opening registration after year end ratings on 12/2 and you have to have a full roster by 12/11. Seriously, WTF is going on over there? I guess they want fewer teams.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They don't want fewer teams, they want DIFFERENT winners.

      Delete
    2. Actually, they want the same number of winners. It is just who they want to win and they all come from their own little circle.

DIFFERENT winners is about making Dallas worse.

      Delete
    3. By all means lets not have the best players win. More important to keep the wanna be clubs happy

      Delete
    4. And I wonder why Houston laughs at us every year? Alan A is the only Captain that consistently gets the better of Houston. He makes teams to win nationals while the others make teams to get a wildcard to sectionals.

      Delete
  79. My teams ready.

    Alan

    ReplyDelete
  80. Well of course your roster is ready Alan. They have been tanking on their mens & womens team for a year to be on your roster.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Nope. A couple ladies were bump ups

    Alan

    ReplyDelete
  82. Whoever is bumped up can say bye bye to playing on your team. Highly doubtful you will play a lady bump up. The truth will come out. Your rosters are based on who can keep their ratings down.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's based on who can win. If all you had to was keep your rating down you'd be on his team every year.

      Delete
    2. I don't care who wins on his team. The only person I wish ill will and no success is Kelley. Maybe he will tear an ACL... Lol

      Delete
    3. ^^ Pathetic. At 10:34, that is funny. There are quite a few people who would fit that mold.

      Delete
  83. Why do you guys keep harping on Alan and his teams???? Without him Texas has no representation in mixed, ever. He is headed to Hawaii and Tucson and nothing on here but garbage talk. Bottom line, success breeds jealousy. It always will. Good luck at nationals in Hawaii and Tucson.

    1. Don't know Alan but all the people I know that have played for him loved it. Don't meet hardly anyone that likes the CC mixed crowd. Several of the CC men will tell you they only play because they don't want the CC women bitching at them. At least they bitch at everyone. They need to just play a club league and leave the winning to the big kids.

      Delete
  84. It's more like - AA constant bragging breeds comments...
Of course we want Texas to go to Nats - just would be nice if Texas could be represented with class & not constant brash & bragodocious that comes across on the blog.

    1. Yeah, because Canyon Creek and Brookhaven ae SO classy. What a joke

      Delete
    2. I'm not bragging,I'm answering questions with my name attached. And as far as representing Texas with class, the only issues I have ever had in league play is in the local Dallas league. In sectionals, everyone we played had no bad feelings towards the team. Sign your name to your comments.

    3. Brash and bragodocious??? Who knew the CC women were actually on this blog???

    4. CC and BH have been complaining about mixed teams for years. I've never heard anything about one of AA's teams. The worst I hear is Mike Kelly is too good. CC/BH teams have been complaining about everyone for years.

      Delete
    5. You've never heard anything about AA's teams? That's comical. Bash the private club members who step up in Board positions and require their teams to play within the rules, that sounds about right.

      Delete
    6. Where did I bash. The only thing I said was I thought oak creek had a stronger team. It's just an opinion.

      Alan

      Delete
    7. I'm not 8:41. I've heard about AA's teams but not about them complaining. The country clubs are always the ones complaining. CC is the leaser in that category but Brookhaven isn't far behind. I have to hear them complain in TCD. They think it is their right to rule mixed. I know they complain about the men's and women's leagues too. I'm not as close to the DTA as I used to be but I remember all of the complaints and where they came from.

      Delete
    8. Alan- the word for you was "brash" not "bash"

      Delete
    9. Sorry. Just glazed over the post. I completly agree with that statement then. Sorry again. It wasn't my intent to sound brash. I guess it comes out they way on "paper".

  85. So what is everyone's thoughts on the flight breakdown? It doesn't appear to be random and looks like DTA put some thought behind it. If you rank the teams like Captain Fantastic did with Picket being 1, followed by Le, Sisk and McHugh, the seeding is 1-3, 2-4. Pretty good for a "random" drawing. I wonder if Brandon had anything to say about how the draw was determined.

    ReplyDelete
  86. After the roster deadline it looks like the (J)CC/McHugh team has been pushed back to number 6 or 7 in the seeds. Relegating them into their normal position of: Hey guys, what about us? We're good too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Looks like each flight has a clear #1 and #4 seed. The other four teams make up the middle. I'd say they did a pretty good job with the flights

  87. Looks more like Sisk is the clear #1 going by the poll results. Surely can't be that this blog is mostly stalked by Big John's boys.

  88. Doesn't really matter. Just pulled up Freeman's roster. Dallas will be playing for fun.

Amazing how Kern appealed his 2012 year-end rating after playing half a season at 5.0 and playing at Championship level the prior year. Surprised he wasn't benchmarked. I guess that shows that tri-level doesn't count, or that Freeman has some good connections.

Funny how Houston just has 3 tri-level teams. I guess the city doesn't bother knowing they have to go up against Freeman. Not much play time until they get to Sectionals. At least Dallas makes a go this year with a full 8. Will be interesting to see the participation rate next year. Hope this doesn't turn out like Junior Tri has.

  102. Nope, they started at noon I think. Great match to watch. Kelley just has another gear, mentally tough and a very very smart player. Keron played well to. Kelley somehow comes up w shot after shot and just keeps you on the defensive. Pretty remarkable really.
