2009 Dallas Fall Preseason Adult Team Tournament

This is a one-of-a-kind event that caters to men’s and women’s USTA teams who want to prepare for the 2009 Fall season and have fun, competitive matches in a playoff-like atmosphere. Buffet and beer will be included at the conclusion of the event for all participants!!!

DATE: Friday August 21 and Saturday August 22. Every team will play one match Friday evening and two matches on Saturday, guaranteed!!!

ELIGIBILITY: Any USTA men’s or women’s team that is going to compete in the fall season (of any level) is eligible to sign up for this event. Only players who are officially signed up on your team are allowed to play.

SITES: The main site is Fair Oaks Tennis Center and additional sites include Huffhines Tennis Center and Village Tennis Center.

PARTY: Party for all participants will take place at the Village Tennis Center on Saturday August 22 at approximately 6 p.m. Kegs of beer and a buffet will be available for all players.

FORMAT: Teams will sign up as a team and compete as a team in their appropriate level. Only players signed up on a team’s USTA roster will be eligible to play. Each team must have a minimum of 8 players to compete in 2 singles and 3 doubles matches every round. Each team is guaranteed 3 matches (win or lose) and teams will be divided into even-numbered flights. A USTA official will be provided at each site. All USTA rules apply. Matches will play regular scoring, two sets with a third-set tiebreaker being played in lieu of a third set. Teams will be divided according to their level, although levels could be combined if draws are small, just like any other tournament. Teams will be able to warm-up 30 minutes prior to the match and lineups must be exchanged at least 10 minutes prior to the match start time. Draws will be distributed via e-mail to all captains.

COST: $27.50 per player paid by team captain or team representative. Once the captain determines how many players he/she will have available, he/she will pay for the entire team. Your payment is your entry so, once we receive the check, your team will be entered in the event. There is no limit on the number of players you can have on your roster, but every team must have a minimum of 8 players.

Make checks payable to Rains Tennis Works, Inc. and mail to:

Fair Oaks Tennis Center

7501 Merriman Pkwy

Dallas, TX 75231

This should be a great event and a great opportunity for teams to get prepared for the start of the regular season. This is also a great chance for teams that don’t normally make the playoffs to compete in a team competition.

Contact Corey Noel at 214-670-1495 or fairoakstennis@netzero.com with any questions you may have or to sign your team up.

I will also answer questions about this event here.

  1. Fair Oaks sucks and Steve Franklin does a poor job running tournaments

  2. WE ARE GOING TO SCRIMMAGE WITH ANOTHER STRONG TEAM AND SAVE THE $28 PER PLAYER.

  3. I think Steve Franklin has learned his lesson. It could be fun and the beer afterwards is enticing.

  4. Interesting concept,
But I would like to see smaller teams,
Like 1 single and 2 doubles,
and drop the having to be a USTA team requirement, just have it go on NTRP rating.

  5. Reaaly like the idea.

  7. sounds interesting to me. Not sure my crew would be up for it but possibly. I hope to make it out at least for the beer part of the event.

  8. The $$$$$ is way too high.Fair Oaks is trying to make a killing on their idea.Team scrimmages would be much cheaper!!!!

To the anon who posted this, tell us how would this work? Just have it go on NTRP rating?? Can you tell us genius?

  10. 10 players x $27.50 = $275.00
Way to much. Who the hell do they think they are _ the DTA???

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1 singles, 2 doubles sounds much better. I agree the entry fee is high for this. So how would having it go on NTRP rating work?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Off of your USTA rating, fuckwad!
That way if you want someone from brookhaven and LB houston of your team you can,
    like the tri-level,
This is a non usta event so why bother having usta teams.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Look the players up on the USTA website to verify their level.

    ReplyDelete
  14. This looks like a waste of time and money.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It's going to be interesting to see how many teams sign up for this. I doubt many. There's no incentive like sectionals so why even bother.

    ReplyDelete
  16. non usta event?? no record of your wins??? forget it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. this is a really dumb idea

    ReplyDelete
  18. All this is a way for Corey and Fair Oaks to screw the players out of their money. No real incentive except to drink beer.

  19. I expected these kind of instructions. I just spent $51 to play in the FW major zone and I'm guaranteed three matches. I'm guaranteed three matches in this for almost half the price, and I get a free meal and beer. The buffet alone is costing us $10 a person so I would love to see how we're making so much money.

On a sidenote, Steve Franklin has no affiliation with this tournament.

Also, I have already had about 10 teams sign up within the first 18 hours of e-mailing captains so obviously some think it's a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Responses I meant. Not instructions. Also, all we have heard about for the last month is how nobody gets competitive matches. That will not be the case for this weekend since the teams will be divided by level.
I think when you factor in the amount you would pay in court fees and balls for 3 scrimmages, you will be paying a similar amount. Especially if you were to go out to eat and drink after.

    ReplyDelete
  21. BTW, DTA would be $330 for 10 players, with no food, drink, court fees, or balls. I think the price is very reasonable.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree and like the idea, 2 doubles and 1 singles would be the way to go and forget about usta teams. Allow players from different clubs to create a team as long as they all have the same rating.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am not ruling anything out. If we are struggling to get teams I would be willing to let players from different facilities play together. The idea of the event is too prepare your team for the regular season though. I know for me as a captain it is like pulling teeth to get my guys out to play before the season starts. This will at least ensure that they get two or three quality matches in before the season begins.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sounds like a great idea - but you need to let any 8 man team enter. Seems very odd that you are wanting to constrain this to current USTA teams

    ReplyDelete
  25. yep, 1 sgl and 2 dubs. but let's insist that each team has at least 1 gay guy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. wake up man _ this whole tournament is run by gay guys.

    ReplyDelete
  27. this is even more meaningless than the fall league itself

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'd say make a run for the border man. Taco Bell has the Bell Grande Meal. 10 tacos or bean burritos or any combination thereof for $7.00-8.00. Now that would go good with beer.

  29. GOT BETTER THINGS TO DO THAT WEEKEND

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is the same weekend as USTA Mixed Playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Have fun guys, but I'll be playing elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Only 4 teams in mixed playoffs so shouldn't matter too much. The reason I had it limited to USTA teams is because it was intended to be a tournament to prepare you for the regular season, since I know as a captain it is tough to get my players out for a regular practice in the offseason. But, as I said, I'm open to ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I know other captains don't have that problem. They can't keep their players off the court in the off season. Sounds like a leadership problem. What's up with that homie?

    ReplyDelete
  34. CoreDawg, don't take any crap from anyone. What you're proposing is an excellent idea if good competition, preparation for the season, and building camaraderie within a USTA team are the goal.

Cost will always be a factor with some people. I suppose you could at least consider allowing people to pay a reduced price if they're not attending the buffet afterwards although that defeats one of the purposes. Those who paid for it would receive a ticket for admission. You might also be able to reduce your costs marginally if you decided not to go with USTA officials.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Why do you need USTA Officals?? We don"t have them at league matches. Lower cost????

    ReplyDelete
  36. why do u need a buffet?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Besides some players not wanting to participate because of the cost, another factor for some people could be the time commitment.

I think that may be the reason why many don't play tournaments. Since this event might only take place once or twice a year if it catches on, players and their families would hopefully be able to make an exception for those limited times and particularly if they're given enough advanced warning. Friday evening and much of Saturday shouldn't be too much to ask. Sunday would still be completely free.

Ironically, cost (and travel) is probably the other primary reason for more players not entering tournaments. lol

The dates also create a possible problem for availability since it's right around the time that kids head back to school. People could be trying to fit in their last vacation of the summer. If the dates could be given out many months in advance next time, people who were interested in playing could better plan around them. Most would've booked their vacation plans for August well before now. Turnout and interest should improve with further advanced notice.

I really like the idea for the event and the format, but wonder if players' availability might be an issue this time.

    ReplyDelete
  38. We expect it to be small the first time but I hope it is something that can be a bi-annual event. I did think about not having USTA officials but I feel like it's better safe than sorry in case some issues arise. Any time you are in a competitive situation it is good to have a mediator.
I don't take much on this blog seriously but somebody who wants to propose reasonable ideas will be taken seriously.

I agree that tournaments in general are dwindling because of the time commitments. League is so much better with one match per weekend. If you are lucky enough to have a team that likes to practice year-round with the same guys than more power to you. I don't think that is the majority, and I think it doesn't benefit your game in the long run.

Good luck to all this weekend!!

  39. Cory wants this to be a Bi event

    That's funny

  40. nancy does keep us all in stiches. I doubt that there will be much of a turn out for this event.
