Tri-level Update - Rebirth of an Empire?

Will All Bow Down Before the Mighty NOHO?

As you are all now aware, Tony Le’s team back-doored into a city championship in tri-level but will be representing Dallas nonetheless.  Also no surprise that Jason Freeman won the Houston berth.  Fort Worth was won by the Sisk's Dallas West squad.  Austin will be represented by the Matthew Grant squad, although I’m not sure how good a team a 3.5C captain can put together.   San Antonio was won by The Borg.  They seem to take care of SA year in and year out.  And for any of you who may be new, don't fall asleep on the SETX team this year.  None of this is really much of a surprise so why the post?

NOHO is now represented by Freeman North, otherwise known as Woodlands-Spearman.  It is basically Freeman’s Houston team (the 3.5s and 4.5s are identical) plus some 4.0s extras, plus Red Benzon.  I’d say being able to add Red is worth starting another team, and they are abiding by Texas Section rules.  But how can they do it and Dallas can’t.  Well, for all of you who have heard that you can only play on one tri-level team, evidently that’s just a Dallas rule and not a Section rule.  Feel free to discuss with your local DTA rep if you like.

So kudos to Freeman for finding a way to strengthen his team.  That definitely makes his 4.0 line a lot stronger.  It also makes the potential sectionals matchups more interesting.   Fresh off losses at 4.0 18s and 40s, can the Houston boys have rebounded this quickly?

This story line is too interesting to drop.   More to come.

  1. Evidently Freeman is considering the outfit above for tri-level team uniforms. If that's true I'm glad I won't be there.

  2. One of Sisk's 3.5s won Cotton Bowl 4.5 doubles. I do not think Sisk 3.5s will lose at tri-level. That gives him the edge for Nationals. The 4.0 and 4.5s are a toss-up between Houston/NOHO/Dallas/FW. The 3.5s will be the difference for Sisk winning Tri-level.

  3. If Kelly wins the Sisk will go to Nationals..

    1. Then you can mark it down. Kelly never lose!!! Zackary and Faris win at 4.0.

    2. Zackary wont smell the court at tri level.

  4. I thought Sisk and Tony were working on a team together for tri-level. What happened?

    1. Kelly and Alan A were suspended from Dallas. Went to ft worth so they could play.

  5. Can someone please explain why in 4.5+ 40 and over there are two flights where one flight has nine teams and the other flight has 5 teams?

    1. Likely so that each team gets 8 matches. Hopefully they have a better plan for playoff qualification then just top 2 teams from each flight.

  6. Here is a topper for that 4.5+ 40 and over flight with the 9 teams. Look at last year's results. The top 3 teams from each flight ended up in the 9 team flight this year. Seems like a good idea to put the top 6 teams from 2015 in the same 9 team flight in 2016. That is what you call a group of death. The 5 team flight is the group of cake (especially if you take the top 2 teams out of a 5 team flight for playoffs). Would be nice if DTA let us know how divisions are determined. Are the flights determined by: seeded teams, random drawing, order of signup, which stair you land on when the entries are tossed to the floor, coordinator's choice/put all the good teams in the other flight and all the so-so teams in the coordinator's flight?

  7. This has been a consistent problem since I joined the DTA leagues in 2002. Nobody knows the process even though there is a "system" in place to determine flights. Last I was told there are various seeding requirements which typically result in only 1 or 2 teams being seeded if any. Meaning the rest of the teams are "randomly" placed. But consistently the best teams end up in the same flights. You would think at some point things would randomly work out fairly.

  8. Who cares which teams are in which flight? There usually are only 2 really good teams anyway, and they will both make the playoffs.

  9. 3:06 must be the DTA

  10. Haha that was a very DTA-like response. Well if there are only two really good teams and they are both in the same flight then normally one would be relegated to QT, which the DTA has proven can be canceled arbitrarily.

  11. Has the DTA released the playoff format?

  12. In the past they seeded at least one team in each flight based on the past spring and fall playoff results. Of course they'll never tell you how they do any of it.

  13. If you went to the captains meeting you would know. They seed one team in each flight based on last year's result. The rest is a random draw (only exception is not putting 2 teams from the same facility in the same flight) which you can watch if you want. Might even be the one to draw the names if you ask Brandon. But it is more fun to sit home and complain.

    1. If that was the case Sweeney and Harlee would not be in the same flight this year. They each won their flight last year and finished 1 and 2 in the playoffs.

    2. 6:09 verifies that the DTA does read this blog. We know they are aware of our issues but none are ever addressed... Unless it is a woman's league complaint.

    3. Yeah that really explained a lot 6:09. Thanks for clarifying. So they seed two teams. Doesn't tell me how they seed them, how many players you have to return, what the date is for having that number of players on the roster, etc. And why would you only seed 2 teams? Why not seed every team or half the teams?

I also work evenings so I haven't and won't attend captains meetings. I pay them to get this stuff right. It's not rocket science.

  14. Did they return 50% of the team?

    1. Hopefully the DTA is not short-sighted enough to use a 50% return criteria prior to rosters locking, that would be meaningless.

On a side note - Chris Hill self-rating as a 4.5? I don't see that lasting the season.

  15. My pick is NOHO. FW team has solid 3.5's, studs in Faris and Kelley but no help. No offense to the other 4.0's and 4.5's but I don't see Pollard or Shriner doing any damage at 4.5 and Faris a very solid 4.0 but next best 4.0 is Nguyen and Alan A. NOHO has manipulated the system enough to win it. Kelly already been and won so not sure how motivated he is either. Sisk will have to pull a rabbit out of a hat this year.

    1. NOHO has no chance. Sisk owns 3.5. Faris and Zackary beat anything NOHO has an and Kelly/Pollard are better.

    2. Good chance Sisk sweep!

    3. Zackery and Faris?? you have to be kidding. Faris not playing with Zackery . He would be behind Alan A and Nguyen. Zakery only plays if Sisk has it won or they are out of it. NOHO would be drooiling to face Zackary in 4.0, even Faris couldn't carry him. I think Alan or Nguyen playing will be playing NOHO, probably Nguyen.

  16. Don't forget Tiny Le!!! He has Chavez who is unbeatable and crew. a 4.0 legit Voss and maybe a hidden 3.5 or ringer. Even Tony may make an appearance. Look out for us!

  17. Toni's team not even in the running.

  18. Sad that it's come down to whatever captain cheats best.....

  19. Fort Worth has an unbeatable 3.5 line for. Doubt they lose a single set.

The 4.0 line is a toss up depending on who does the line up for Fort Worth/Dallas come clutch time. Zackary being considered as a formidable dubs guy is a joke. Dallas Le/??, Fort Worth Faris/Alan A. are really the strongest team at the event.

At 4.5 NOHO has the slight edge.Green owns Kelly and has every bit the experience to beat all the Top Dallas and Fort Worth teams.

Pools come out later this week so we will have a better idea of how tough the event will really be.

    3. That's funny, but I thought there were guys on the court in mixed as well.

    4. 12:49 is Zackary sucking up to Kelly. You tell bye grammar.

    5. Is Alan still beating women?

  20. NOHO wins this year Tri-level. Kelly to old to carry is partner. period

    ReplyDelete
  21. If nobody owns Kelly then why is he 4.5? He only wins in 4.5 and 8.0 mixed. He will lose more than he wins at Tri sectionals. Alan is a mixed specialist. Still will be very tough to beat. He will run circles around Tiny and his 4.0 line.
