Old Guy Roster Sign Up Is NOW

Year end ratings are done so that means it’s time to start thinking about getting the old guys out to play.  I believe you have until December 15 to have a minimum roster so get busy.

Here's hoping everyone has a nice holiday season before we all get started again.

Nothing says intimidation more at 4.5 playoffs than rolling onto the court with your cashmere Burberry overcoat, white patent leather dress shoes, and a wooden racquet.  Yeah, I can still beat you like this.  Note the guy on the left only has one racquet.  He’s not worried at all.

The 4.0s have the general idea.  If you want to be able to play up, first you have to be able to dress the part.

And in the spirit of more coverage of 3.5, these fine fellows were happy to pose for a picture in between sets.

  1. Personally, I'm working hard to convince Mr. White Cashmere Overcoat to be my 40s doubles partner. If we don't win it won't be his fault.

  2. The cashmere overcoat is over-the-top, but kinda like the dapper dandy look, particularly Rene Lacoste's alligator sport jacket. Better than a raggedy league or tournament t-shirts. If you can't play good, look good.

  3. Given the large number of 40+ guys that got bumped to 5.0, the rule permitting only 2 on a 40+ roster is absurd. A lot of guys that were expecting to be playing are finding out they don't have a team shortly before rosters due.

    1. USTA needs to allow more than two per roster.

  4. A lot of 40s teams with no one on the roster. I'm sure most will fill up but I'd bet the big bump up list and the short window force some teams to fold.

    1. I know a couple guys who said they couldn't get their teams to make so you are right. They are now looking to join other teams.

  5. I have an email into the District Office here in AR asking about the 2 limit on 5.0s in the 40+ league since there was a such a large nation wide bump of 40+ guys to 5.0's. Curious to here response, I propose a limit of 4 on the roster.

  6. Any chance they would increase roster spots for 5.0s before deadline, or is it just too late??

  7. District President said the 2 limit is a national rule and rules are placed 1 year out so 2016 would be earliest, but rebuttal is who would have seen National doing such a large bump to 5.0 of 40+ players. Believe someone mentioned PNW lost 20% of 4.5 to bump ups

    1. The USTA would have had knowledge this was coming and could have done something about it. A quick estimate shows that the number of Dallas guys that played 40+ as 4.5s in 2014 that got bumped to 5.0 is about the same as the total number of 5.0 roster spots available across all of Dallas. Good luck making a roster over all of the existing 5.0s and 5.5 bump downs.

It's not like you're asking for a radical change like increasing the number of lines. Just let more players on the roster than are allowed to play in a single match - like every other USTA league in existence.

  8. This is just Rossouw whining because he knows he stands no chance of winning with him at 5.0 so he wants to add additional 5.0s to his roster.

  9. Honestly, I'm not sure why there is any limit on the number of 5.0s on the roster as long as only two can play per match? So what if I have six versus four versus two? Its more revenue for the USTA (larger rosters), but doesn't compromise the current structure of the matches. I really don't get the limit on roster spots at all. The only real change to me is that it gives everyone a better chance of getting 2 5.0s out on a more consistent basis.

  10. It was originally put in place to place a premium on 5.0s that were willing to play frequently - rather than have a stable of 5.0 ringers that came out for the big matches only. It makes marginal 5.0s valuable to the team, as long as they're willing to commit.

The rule wasn't so bad when 40+ 5.0s were few and far between. Unfortunately that's no longer the case and the rule is going to prevent a lot of 40+ players from finding a team.

  11. Abbruzzese putting together a stacked 40+ 8.0 team this year.

How did Pollard stay a 4.5 with a 17-0 regular season and 7-3 championship record in 2014? That's far better than a lot of guys that got moved up. The 0 & 0 tournament loss to a mediocre 4.5?

    1. A stacked group of tankers.
Sad and pathetic really, but we have come to expect nothing less from that group.

    2. What's crazy is Pollard not even the best guy they have, maybe third or fourth. On top of that Kelley can play all out this year cuz last year he had an appeal by his name. Looks like he and Mary Zachary were winning open level tcd matches. Not sure how Alan does it but Kelley and his new partner may be better that his last one and they went 42-1. That 8.0 and 7.0 team are stacked.

  12. Alan also has a 40+7.0 mixed team with him, Keith Clark, Mike Pearson, Mike Zachary, and even 3.5 Greg Wiley from Houston. He must really want to go to Tucson!!!

    1. Can't see that 7.0 roster losing. Wiley should be ashamed of himself.

  13. I am on a green hill 8.0 team and we are waiting for Kelly and his 3.5. We have a little surprise of our own!!

    1. Awesome. Someone will finally beat Kelly locally at mixed. Wait...who wins the other line? One thing I know about team tennis. It doesn't matter if you don't win 2 out of 3 lines.

    2. Well. I will take the bet that Kelley does not drop a mixed match this year. He and his partner single handily help FW win their league last year. He is playing out of FW again so he will miss a few Dallas matches. He took down some very solid guys from FW last year and that league is tougher than Dallas. Btw, you are forgetting Alan now 4.0 and Gene Davis is also on team. Look for Kelly to lose a few if team is up 2-0

  14. My understanding is because Alan's 8.0 team decided they didn't want to travel to Hawaii for 40 and over nationals in 2013 that they were Not eligible for a year. I have a feeling you will see them make the trip this time.

  15. All hype, no substance. One decent 3.5 in Danielle white. No others. They finish in 2 nd

  17. 2 years ago Mary Zackary was 4.5, now she's 3.5.

In prior years Alan playing as a 4.5 was their one weakness, now that he's down to 4.0 they're unbeatable and a lock for nationals. Anyone that says differently is either clueless or affiliated with that team and trolling.

    1. Alan is just a POS anyway so who really cares? Cheaters are always cheaters and they always hang around other cheaters that way they can feel good about themselves and keep blowing smoke each other's ass's!

    2. Canyon Creekers getting their hate on early this year. I thought you had a chance last year and you blew it.

    3. I laugh every year at how much hate can be generated in mixed. Since it's always more than in men's I assume it's the women driving it. Then again some of the guys who play mixed bitch like little girls.

  18. So if you can't beat 'em, bitch about 'em. Hopes that's rewarding.

    1. Why is the person not to be named not playing 40's again. He is the best player out there.... Strange bec he is c rated now.

    2. Actually, I think the mantra is if you can't beat em, tank down to a lower level until you can beat someone.
      That's the Springpark blueprint.

    3. CC has been begging for SP to let someone else go to sectionals and give it a shot. How'd that work out last year? If you go all the way, move over.

  23. I Can honestly say if I was asked to play on SP mixed team I would say no. I only want to go to nationals if it was earned, not playing w a 5/0 5/5 tanker to help me get there!!!

  24. Whose going to take 4.0's mens 40's, there is like 20 teams? I dont see any super teams just a bunch of supertakers !!! LOL. You know who I'm talking about.

I hear bengay ultra strength is going on sale at CVS just before the season starts as the DTA is trying to give back. Some of you old guys might need Vicks as well. I'll check with GNC and see if they have any other things on Sales like Glucosamine.
