Final Countdown... Last week of the season!

I don't have much time or motivation this week but my captain is pushing us really hard to finish matches.  Apparently the DTA says if you don't have your matches by the 28th entered into Tennislink, they will double default teams.  Also, for those matches on the 29th, you need them in by the 29th or a double default.

This all seems a bit harsh but it is their world and their rules.  It is a little reminiscent of the nice neighbor who gets in control of the HOA and becomes a tyrant.

Be sure and get your matches finished or the DTA bogeyman will get you.

  1. My captain went nuts yesterday about some makeup edict from the DTA. Don't know the details but said they gave teams one week to make up last weekends rain out, then ONE DAY to makeup this weekend's match if there was a problem. Sounds a little crazy.

  2. You both forgot the No Exceptions clause. Our captain is bitching too.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Only exception is Tony Le's team. DTA knows what those scores will be so they don't even need to play.

  4. I don't get it. Doesn't the DTA set the calendar for these leagues??? Why do they need to make last minute changes when they decided the schedules to start with???

  5. In the event you didn't know, our Citizen First Class Hero Klamecki was never the nice guy that got a hold of the HOA. He was Jackass First Class and whoever made that decision blows my mind.

    1. He was a jerk for years then disappeared to play in FW so evidently people forgot about him. He should have stayed in FW and screwed them over.

    2. FWTA is clearly smarter than the DTA. That is clearly a pretty low bar.

  6. With all due respect guys, I never even mentioned Klamecki. I really do not know the guy and don't know if he is even cognizant of the scheduling. I was just making a generalization about the organization. In reality, I think they are good people but sometimes they do things without a great amount of thought to how it affects the rest of us.

Captains have it hard and it is not a job I would ever want. It is hard enough getting 8 guys out every week much less working around weather and then unreasonable timelines. I can't tell you the number of times I've been on teams that couldn't get 8 out and I received a call at the last minute with a captain talking about so and so unable to play. Fortunately, I am one of the guys that can usually play.

I am unsure the people who do scheduling understand that captains are essentially unpaid DTA volunteers trying to manage unpaid participants all at the whims of countless external factors such as weather, court availability and other captains.

    1. Agreed, but I'd say its worse than that. Captains are unpaid volunteers but they are also the DTA's biggest customers because they drive participation. I've never seen a company that is crappier to its biggest customers than the DTA. Maybe that's why they aren't in the business world to start with.

  7. Murray, I am a captain as well as this is the memo received that applies to M4.0 ONLY. Other levels have different criteria and dates.
Any make up match necessary prior to the 6/29/2014 match MUST BE COMPLETED by Saturday, 6/28/2014.
If a make-up is required due to inclement weather for the Sunday, 6/29/2014 match, then make up match MUST BE COMPLETED by Monday, 6/30/2014.

Seems reasonable to me. Playoffs start 7/11. 7//4 is a holiday weekend and captains will want the schedule by Monday 7/7. So, this gives them just 3 days to finalize the playoff schedule for men and women for various levels and various locations. Why are you complaining at the DTA?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Clearly the DTA is chiming in!!!

      Delete
    2. How can they only have 3 days to finalize playoffs. They should already know the format and schedule. The only real issue is the teams playing in those slots.

I can't tell if you are trying to be funny and making fun of the DTA buffoons or you are really a DTA apologetic.

      Delete
    3. Klamechi, being a captain in Fort Worth complaining about the scheduling in Dallas makes your empathy sound a little disingenuous.

  8. The DTA does a crappy job of seeding teams in each flight and now makes it hard for captains to get matches made-up. I think a number of teams will probably choose not to play next season. Many captains are unhappy with there rules and regulations. Losing teams will be the only way things might get better or they just don't care.

    1. Rumor has it that Canyon Creek and Brookhaven have asked the DTA brass to make the rules so ridiculous that all the captains quit USTA tennis. That's the only way they can get to sectionals.

  10. Direct quotes from the DTA email regarding the 4.0 makeup issue.

If a make-up is required due to inclement weather for the Sunday, 6/29/2014 match, then make up match MUST BE COMPLETED by Monday, 6/30/2014

As a reminder, per the 2014 CAPTAINS ANSD PLAYERS HANDBOOK regarding reschedules::

MAKE UP MATCHES (Due to Rain/Championship Advancement/Extreme Weather):

8G. The League Coordinator may reschedule a match at his/her discretion.
    he DTA email

As we know you all understand, there is ABSOLUTELY NO FLEXIBILITY in the dates listed above. Please DO NOT REQUEST to reschedule matches outside of the dates outlined above. The answer will be NO.

    1. I'm giving you two days to get the match in whether its a monsoon or not. I have the authority to reschedule matches at my discretion. Don't even think about questioning me because it is going to be no. Sounds more like the IRS than the post office.

    2. Thanks 5:49 for picking and choosing what to post from the email. Here is another piece.
We understand the tight window and appreciate everyone’s efforts to work together to get the matches completed within the window provided. Hopefully, the matches scheduled on the final day will play as scheduled. If so, QT schedules will go out end of day Monday, 7/7/2014 for M4.0 and up and Monday, 7/14/2014 for M3.5

If they needed more time to make playoff schedules they should have started season one week earlier or eliminated these Mother's Day/Father's Day holidays.

  14. Final week 4.0 round up
Flight A - High Point cruises into cities as the favorites, McKinney to QT, GTC gets the automatic QT bid from the fall, Oak Creek crossing their fingers
Flight B - everyone said there were four teams that could win this flight and with one week left there still are. Any of the four could win it and any of the four could miss the playoffs altogether.
Flight C - Village has a two match lead with one to play so they advance to cities, Oak Creek to QT with TBar who edges out Brookhaven
Flight D - another toss up with five teams tied with two losses. Huffines and Village have the easiest matches but are at the bottom of the lines. Brookhaven leads the flight but plays Fretz who is in third. One of them will be out.

Non-profits are typically defined by your ability to lead & inspire volunteers and raise money. He wasn't qualified to do any of those things. Flight 1
      1 Canyon Creek/McHugh (2nd in B, 8-1)
      4 Village/Jacob (2nd in D, 7-2, 27-18)
      5 Greehill/Ohl (3rd in B, 7-2)
      8 Garland/Sisk (5th in A, has the automatic bid)

      Flight 2
      2 McKinney/Bazan (2nd in A, 7-2, 34-11)
      3 Oak Creek/Rich (2nd in C, 7-2, 33-12)
      6 Huffhines/McIntosh (3rd in D, 7-2)
      7 TBar/Snow (3rd in C, 6-3)

Let's see if DTA will really follow through on its "NO EXCEPTIONS" mandate on the deadlines of when matches should be completed. If they hold true to it, then Somabut should get a double default for not getting his score in before Sunday morning ... as should a number of other teams. And there are still matches that haven't been finished since early June. What's the point of rules if you don't have the backbone to enforce them???

  46. Here's proof right here: From Sherri's email on 6/23: "Any match or line not completed and recorded in TENNIS LINK by the date set below by the Dallas Tennis Association will be considered a double default, NO EXCEPTIONS."

    2. But that's just it -- even the cellar dwellers should have to follow the "rules." We're all expected to do so, and the DTA should be expected to enforce.

While it might not make a difference for this season with Somabut, the double-default rule would come into play and affect his team for the next year. Think about it that way.

And don't get me started on the playoff format for cities -- that's a whole other complete eff-up on Sherri and Brandon's part. I mean, come one -- you play more matches in the QT than in the cities? You could still have two flights in the QT, make the winners play it out, then have a five-team round-robin at cities -- giving team four matches apiece to duke it out rather than two. Only makes sense to have all flight winners play each other.
