Noel/Sisk Prize Money Tourney III

Here is the info, per request from the anon. Of course the prize money is paid in bubble gum not dollars for the obligatory person that will tell me to change it.

Sisk/Noel Prize Money Tournament III

When: March 12-14, 2010

Where: Sites: Garland Tennis Center. Another nearby location will be chosen if necessary.

EVENTS: Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles

FORMAT: This is an old-school format. There are no divisions by level. Everybody signs up for singles and/or doubles. Seeding will be determined by Corey Noel, John Sisk, and an objective third party and will be based primarily on NTRP ratings, USTA results, and previous Noel/Sisk tournament results. Maximum draw size will be 32 players/teams for all draws. If there are more than 32 players/teams, the players will be divided into multiple draws (max size=16). Example: 45 players sign up= a draw of 22 and a draw of 23. Seeds will be placed using the wave method if multiple draws occur. There will be a consolation draw for each event.

NOTE: Many of you are already thinking, how can there be no levels? What makes our tournaments special and different is the handicapping system. We have used a handicap scoring system in our last tournaments, making virtually every match competitive, when it may or may not have been under normal scoring rules. The way it works is, players receive one handicap game at the start of each set (one point in third-set tiebreaker) per 0.5 difference in level, based on the players’ NTRP ratings, including the option to start serving or receiving. For example, if a 4.0 plays a 4.5, the 4.0 would begin each set with the option to serve or receive, and a 1-0 lead. Same applies in doubles. If two 4.0s play two 4.5s, the 4.0 team would begin each set with the option to serve or receive, and a 2-0 lead (8.0 v. 9.0). We had a lot of positive feedback for this format and we look forward to using it again. We will only accept players in the 3.0-5.0 range, and a maximum of 4 games will be given in any set. If players do not have a USTA rating, the tournament committee will assign one based on available information. We will use end-of-year USTA ratings.

SCORING: Regular Season—Two out of three sets, regular scoring, with a 3rd-set super-tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. Finals can be played under full two out of three set format if time allows or both players agree.

ENTRY FEE: $29 per event or $50 for two events. Maximum two events. Preferred method of payment is by mail or PayPal. All players will be invoiced by PayPal on Monday, March 1 and payment is due by Saturday, March 6. Players paying via PayPal will be assessed a $3 processing fee.

PRIZE MONEY : This is a prize money event. No trophies, no t-shirts; we’re playing for cash, and for fun of course.

PAYOUT: 1st place: 25% of all entry fees for that draw (12.5% per doubles team member).
2nd place: 15% of all entry fees for that draw (7.5% per doubles team member).
Consolation winner: 10% of all entry fees for that draw (5% per doubles team member).
Example: if 20 people sign up for singles only for a total prize pool of $500, winner would receive $125, 2nd place would receive $75, consolation winner would receive $50. Split those prizes in half to determine doubles prize money. More than $1,000 has been paid out in previous tournaments.

SCHEDULE of Play: Singles will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, 12 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. Sunday. Doubles will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday, and noon Sunday. Mixed will begin Saturday at 6 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. All times are dependent upon draw sizes.

SIGN-UP: Sign up by e-mailing noelcarter91199@yahoo.com. List the events you would like to sign up for and you will be invoiced accordingly through PayPal.

DEADLINE: Players must be signed up and paid by Saturday March 7.

  1. why wouldn't you do this tourney in a more central location? Just because you and Sisk live in a shithole does not mean everyone has to drive there.

    ReplyDelete
  2. yes GTC is a shithole and in the middle of the hood. the draw is really gonna be skewed because its for cash.

    ReplyDelete
  3. It is a shithole, but it's Sisk's shithole! How did he get 56 players to play out of there in the Fall?

    ReplyDelete
  4. We have done this twice before and nobody has complained about illegitimacy of the draw. Garland is in Dallas County and within 15 minutes of Highways 30, 75, 635, and Bush. If you want it closer, run your own tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Why don't you call it "The White Trash Open"?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Brookhaven has a tournament the same week-end. What do you your chances are of out drawing it.No chance is my guess!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. All – This tournament is really bogus. It’s a scam. Hold on to your $$.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm not expecting to outdraw Brookhaven. It wasn't the ideal weekend for us but there are tournaments pretty much every weekend for the next month so we are always going to be competing with somebody. It's going to be mostly Garland guys anyway so I doubt there will be much conflict with Brookhaven.

Yeah, it's a scam. Brookhaven's running the same scam that weekend but they don't give you any of your money back.

  9. I'm not white and I enjoyed the last tournament.

  10. Price out renting a tennis center for 500.00/weekend plus 3 cases of balls and prize money.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Andy, I didn't even know you knew the blog existed. I'm planning on challenging you for your title this time around.

  12. lets just call it the trailer park open

  13. Worthwhile read in this issue of Tennis Magazine. Entitled "Getting Bumped", page 14.

Briefly addresses the nation wide move to re-rank players. Touches on our favorite topic of "sandbagging", and even mentions Dallas tennis, quoting Brian Modic who states that 3/4 of the teams advancing to the playoffs are repeaters from the prior year.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It's a fair tournament? Has a 3.5 or a 4.0 ever won your tournament? I know for sure no 3.5 has and if a 4.0 did it is because he was out of level to start. The handicapping system is a joke.

Do not compare your tournament to Brookhaven. At least at Brookhaven you play guys within your level, you may not win money, but no 3.5 or 4.0 is going to win money in your tournament with that terrible capping system. They are basically throwing money into the pot to play a couple matches.

Corey Noel (4.5) vs John Sisk (4.0)
John gets 1-0 leads in each set and can serve first, he still does not have a chance to beat Corey.

  15. brian modic should shut his fat mouth. brian modic did nothing to help improve our leagues. he kept the secretive dta methods for seeding and flighting league teams. consequently we had the major league vs minor league approach to 4.5. hell, brian was not smart enough to seed branch's team.

my hope is that john kraemer will at least give us more transparency to the "behind closed doors" mtheods of the arrogant dta.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ok fine. Let's call it the "White Bee Trash Open".

The Bee covers yellow and black. Did we miss anyone else before setting the final name?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lol---Kiron won cotton bowl, true 4.5? Ben Oberto 4.0 vs Atul Rajani4.5, ben gets 1-0 and serve. Who do you take? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I totally agree. Who the hell is Brian Modic! That article is just the USTA trying to justify the travesty of their collosal ratings screw ups. No explanation of why 4.5's had no bump ups. If their logic applies to 4.0's that same logic should apply to 4.5's. But in fact it did not. Why, you ask? Because your USTA and their local flunkies (DTA) are assholes.

  19. OK, I was told I have to come on here and set you guys straight so here we go.

This is the fourth time we have run this tournament. The first time, a 4.0 defeated a 5.0 in the singles final. John and I (8.0) defeated a 9.0 team in the final.

The second time, a 4.5 defeated a 4.0 in the singles final. Can't remember who won the doubles.

The third time, a 4.5 defeated a 5.0 in singles. A 9.0 team beat an 8.0 team in the final. We also had a 4.0 that won money by winning consolation.

So, of these 5 finals, 3 of them were won by the lower-rated player, so don't tell me the system doesn't work. I have the evidence.

Plus, as a 4.0 when do you get an opportunity to play a 4.5 or 5.0 in a competitive setting?? It is supposed to be a chance to have fun and play tennis in the offseason against new people, the money is just a bonus.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The handicap clearly does not work if a lower level player like a 3.5 or 3.0 plays a 4.5.

    ReplyDelete
  21. There is no handicap system that makes a 3.0 beat a 4.5. Who plays 3.0 anyway??

    ReplyDelete
  22. The handicap system does work. If you are strong player in your NTRP rating (basically a sandbagger acording to this blog) then you will have a good chance. Just like in a regular tournament (sandbaggers) have a better chance. If you are a low end player in your divison then its going to be tough, but it would be tough in a regular tournament also. So stop crying about it and if you don't like it then don't play.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Great idea, John, however I'll be hitting the ski slopes in Colorado that weekend otherwise I would've signed up.

  24. I AM PLAYING BROOKHAVEN

    ReplyDelete
  25. GARLAND vs BROOKHAVEN

    Duh ???

Play at a great club which is nearby and has indoor facilities in case it rains.

    - OR -

Play in a cesspool with a few nets strung up at an inconvenient location _ and you can scratch your ass if it rains.

    Real tough choice

    - Dave Ware

    ReplyDelete
  26. COUNTRY CLUB TEAM TENNIS
Why do the head Pro's & managers at the various country clubs always kiss the ass of the arrogant DTA?

We should form a team tennis league which involves only COUNTRY CLUBS. Include teams from Brookhaven, T-Bar-M, Canyon Creek, Royal Oaks, Northwood, DAC, DCC, Gleneagles, JCC, Hackberry, Stonebriar, Lakes, Eldorado, etc. We do NOT need the USTA to have a great time playing team tennis. We can easily organize a very nice 9 or 10 team league at all the various NTRP levels and we do not need "help" from the DTA or USTA.

    Benefits:
    1) We can play at nice facilities every week. No need to play at shit holes like Garland.
    2) We'll have competitive matches every week. Nearly 100% of the cheaters play at Garland, High Point, Huffines or Oak Creek. Country Club players are much more honest about playing their correct NTRP level.
    3) We can socialize with individuals that use words with more than one syllable. No need to play with trailer trash.

Come on guys. Let's get this organized!

  27. Country Clubbers:
    "A League of Our Own"

    FANTASTIC IDEA!

Although I see the trailer trash are already starting to whine.

  28. This blog has taken a real nasty turn for the worse. Why don't we have a group hug and promise to be polite and civil in the future. Remember Valentine's Day is only two days away.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well one thing's for sure, Kramer and Gilpin will be hugging for valentines.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Country Clubs league? Is that like being the best sucky team?

    ReplyDelete
  31. John Kraemer seems like a good guy. Hopefully he'll make some improvements in league admin _ at least with transparency.

Lets all give John a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Modic and Gilpin are the same person. Anybody ever see them in the same room together?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dave Ware runs a great tournament. He knows what he's doing and he always has a plan B when weather or schedules run interference. He has it down to a science. I have played in several of Dave Ware's tournaments and everyone was run extremely efficiently and professionally. If you are looking for the pure tennis tournament experience that will be well run then play Brookhaven. If you're looking to beat some of your buddies for a little cash then play Garland. Both should be a good time however my recommendation is Brookhaven.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm don't know what a "pure tennis tournament experience" is, but MF is right about Dave Ware. Nobody runs a more efficient tourney. But I have heard some good things about the upstarts Noel/Sisk. I've heard that nobody runs a better tourney in Garland than those two.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Can we get some of our captains from country clubs teams interested in our Country Club League for the fall???

It really is an excellent idea.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thx Mitchell! Have fun on the slopes! Pehaps we can play some dubs when you return? I'd like for you to meet Coredawg(Corey) Have you decided on a Spring team? Do you know David Jackson? He's been a pilot at Delta for 30ish years.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mitchell has signed up for JCC. They have the start of a very good team with Reiman, Lutes and Fix. They will need a lot more depth to contend at the City Playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  38. John,

I signed up with the JCC. I've been friends with Reiman and Lutes since the 90s and Michael is trying to build a competitive team by bringing in a few outsiders. Brian Morrison is putting together a pretty good team also. If you want to do some preseason scrimmages email me. Weatherby has my email if you still have his contact information.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I know of him. He's a 777 captain out of Atlanta.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If you 4.0 guys wanted to get out of Dallas, you should have signed up with Somabut. You'll have a good run but he'll beat you all in the DCC. JCC will NEVER make Sectionals and you all know it.

It's sad to see talented wasted.

    ReplyDelete
  41. He domiciles out of Atlanta, but lives here. He was on my fall 3.5 team and will be joining my "B" team 4.0 team in the Spring. We've been buds about a decade. Let's do the scrimmage, we can host and supply the beer if you want. Playing at JCC is fine too, actually closer for me than GTC, but whatever works.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Somabut always put together a great team so you're probably right that he will be the front runner. However, I'm sure John Sisk and I know Brian Morrisson are putting together solid teams so there will be some good tennis played this spring. There's more to life than going to Nationals, like, say, friendships.

    ReplyDelete
  43. How exactly am I a "true loser"? For the record Somabut never asked me to play for him. So, I'm supposed to go begging certain captains to please let me join their team at the chance that will be the team that goes to nationals?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Somabut won't be the team to beat in 2010. He will be in 2011 but not this year.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Is that you tooting your own horn Morrison ?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Fix: I'm glad you've learned not to respond to every moronic comment from us anons. We are dumb, cowardly and lonely people who derive a perverted thrill by trying to bring people like you down to our level.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Do you have to be gay to play in the Nancy/Sisk tournament?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey, not all anons are pathetic losers. I for one am perfectly normal except for my OCD, ED, and ADD. We need an Anons Anonymous program with a 12-step recovery so that we can become productive members of society.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It's strictly a don't ask, don't tell event.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sadly that's true. But it would be delicious fun to have a fashion contest during the tourney in which participants don their best retro short tight tennis shorts and strut their stuff down a catwalk.

    ReplyDelete
  51. You don't have to be but it's preferred. We have a clothing optional party in the pro shop hot tub after the tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I would rather go to Garland and see John Sisk in the hot tub wearing only a speedo, drinking a Miller High Life.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah, but you don't count Nancy.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The people playing in that night tourney this week at Fair Oaks will be popsicles. The temperature will be in the 30's with fairly strong winds.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Brookhaven is looking better and better for Mar 12 - 14.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Tri Level Sectionals is this upcoming weekend. Tifortified see if Team Bender is all hype or are they as dominant as everyone says they are.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Bender has a good Tri-Level team. But SETX is just as good and Houston is definitely better. Look for Houston to win a trip to Nats.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Where is the Tri-Level tourney?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Tri Level Sectionals event is in Kingwood Tx.

    ReplyDelete
  60. How is SETX just as good? What are u smoking? I can see Houston, but SETX? Mike Getz, is that u?

    ReplyDelete
  61. In one bracket it will be between Houston and Ft Worth and in the other it will be between Dallas and Setx. Still don't understand how Ft.Worth should be eligible since all they did was play tiebreakers to decide the winner. Still sounds shady to me.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Who are the strongest players at 4.5, 4.0 and 3.5 in the tri level?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Houston has the best players at all three levels. It will be a big upset if anyone beats them.

    ReplyDelete
  64. If a player hasn't accumulated ATP points since 2005, can he come in at 3.5?

    ReplyDelete
  65. He is welcome on a Bender or Sisk team.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I was on the Dallas tri level team last year and watched a team from SE smoke Feldman and Thompson. I don't know who they were but it was like 1 and 1 and they were pretty darn good.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Setx 4.5 line Jacob Vernon and Brian Mills is the team that beat Feldman/Thompson last year. They pretty much dominated 4.5 last year, and even went undefeated at league sectionals last year. They will give Dallas all they can handle at Tri Levels this weekend. Kiron/Slezak are as tough as they come in 4.5. That will be one heck of a match to see if they match up.

    ReplyDelete
  68. SETX also has very tough 4.0 players. Kevin Bohm was undefeated all year including 3-0 at Sectionals in 2007. He played Mixed only in 2008 & 2009. Craig Fox is another very strong 4.0 player who also played some 4.5 last year. Their 3.5 line is good but not outstanding.

SETX vs Dallas will be a shootout. But Houston will beat either team.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Don't underestimate the power of a bender/somabut combo. Those guys are old school players and recruiters. Team bender will mow through the competition at sectionals this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  70. You don't think any of the Dallas 4.0's on the trilevel can compete with Houston or SETX?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yes, I think the 4.0 lines at Tri-Level will be very close. Slight edge Houston over Dallas. Slight edge Dallas over SETX. But we'll find out this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Houston and Dallas appear evenly matched. Since the event is being held near Houston, you have to go with the home team. Sorry Bob B/BobS

    ReplyDelete
  73. Bender's team was very lucky to win the local tri-level competition. They'll get smashed at Sectionals. Look for them to be 1-2 or 0-3 in the round robin.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I don't like spped skating. They don't have pit stops.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Midland out Feldman in possibly, if they can get the players. 2nd place Dallas couldn't field enough players to make the trip.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Team Feldman is out too. Not enough players could commit last minute.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I heard Waco was in. They are gonna play all their league matches the night before sectionals like they did in USTA league

    ReplyDelete
  78. They had no idea until today? Didn't the other team let the USTA know a little earlier?

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think Dallas had 2 days to try and get it together. That makes 1 bracket a little easier now.

    ReplyDelete
  80. We had 26 hours ----- we got close--- had 4.5's and 3.5's ready to go.

    ReplyDelete
  81. That is unfortunate but it does seem to happen in these events since they are deemed as worthy by some. I hope everyone still gets plenty of matches this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  82. dallas beat college station 2-1
3.5 and 4.5 won and the 4.0 lost

    setx beat san antonio 2-1
4.5 and 4.0 won and the 3.5 lost

fort worth beat east tex 2-1

    ReplyDelete
  83. John Sisk is a cheating SOB and I'm glad his team didn't make it to tri-level Sectionals

    ReplyDelete
  84. How original . . . You douche.

    ReplyDelete
  85. King Bob's are in the final after winning this afternoon! Go Big D!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Dallas vs Houston for a trip to Nationals in Palm Springs. Dallas has been the more dominant team this weekend. Should be a fun Competitive match.Too bad Dallas couldn't get another team to Tri level sectionals. Could have made things interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'm very impressed that 2 Captains are actually on the court for Dallas contributing to their teams effort.

    ReplyDelete
  88. This just goes to show how weak the 3.5 and 4.0 divisions have become if Bender is in the lineup and beating another sections best 3.5s 6-1, 6-1.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Hoston is much better than Dallas. They will win the finals easy.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Branch, Somabut, Sisk & Bender are all cheats. Their guys tank matches and manage scores. I know that for a fact.

Noel is a princess. Also beyond question.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Houston edged Dallas 2-1 in a close one. Houston won the 4.0 line in straight sets. 4.5 and 3.5 came down to 3rd set supertiebreakers, Houston won the 4.5 line and Dallas won the 3.5 line. Some great tennis played by both teams.

    ReplyDelete
  92. With all the bumps, how is Knutson back to 4.0? That is impressive domination on that 4.0 line in the championship. I expect no less from Mr. Freeman.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Good question. Congrats to Kern on making it back to Nationals.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Kern back to Nationals again, the fix is in.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Cary,

Knutson lost every match at 4.5 last year. He has a tough lefty serve, but his partner Ellingsen was the one that killed us with his great hands. Ellingsen has been playing 4.5 and 5.0 tennis the last few years. He also got bumped down.

They were just much better than we were and kicked our butt.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Ellingsen has never played 5.0. Don't confuse HTA 5.0 w/ USTA 5.0.

He's the perfect example of how screwed up mixed doubles rating can get. Just played mixed for a year or two and you are almost guaranteed to get bumped down.

    ReplyDelete
