4.0 QT Tourney
I want to make sure Alex and Eddie have a good 4th of July weekend so I thought I would go ahead and breakdown the QT Tourney that starts next weekend.
Teams:
#1 Seed: Lifetime (Team Eddie)
Returns again to the playoffs touting they are the "best" and based on seedings they are, so the DTA has decided to forego the matches and award them a trip to the DCC. But then Andre was DQ'ed and they decided to make them play it out. They do boast an impressive roster as they did in the Fall now with a rejuvenated Myers and improved Mudsam. New recruits like Studey, Gonzalez, Shahab, McAfee and Moore will need to contribute because temps should be hovering at 100 degrees and Brandon most likely cannot play 4 singles matches since his opponents will be much stronger than the early rounds of the East Texas MZ. I am guessing Hill and Studey will anchor some other singles lineups and that is where it might get tricky. They are the favorite to advance but then again weren't they the favorite to win the Fall and we all know how that turned out.
#2 Seed: HP/Bazan (SWAT)
I didn't even realize we were the #2 seed, our season has not gone as planned with some setbacks and injuries along with the way. I am proud how my guys escaped at the Lakes and then after a tough loss at Brookhaven turned up the heat to finish strong. After getting beaten by Bob in the Fall I realized we needed to get deeper and we did but unfortunately I feel I could always use more. We relied heavily on singles in the Fall and now I think our team has actually become stronger in doubles and our singles crew has grown with Victor and Mark Carter being added to that part of our team. I am confident we will do well next weekend but I am not making any insane predictions. I know there will be 4 tough opponents in front of us but I feel we are a team peaking at the right time.
#3 Seed: Oak Creek/Smith
This team was a sleeper in the Fall playoffs but there are no secrets this time around, they have very solid doubles play and singles play that can scratch out victories when needed. The addition of Campbell was big as well as Myrick. Galnares has had mixed results as a new singles player and got double bageled in the season finale v. Lifetime. The rest of the crew returns from the Fall. The roster size of 12 seems small but all 12 should play although I am guessing some players like Webb and Barnhard may have to help out at singles which will leave some gaps that players like Galnares and Kelley cannot fill. While I can't call them the favorite I am all but certain if one the "favs" falters it will be because this team stepped up and took them down.
#4 Seed: Brookhaven/Bartlett
Our team knows firsthand not to overlook this team. They may have stumbled hard against Garland but so did most other teams this season. Don Buford will be a huge key, just how many matches can he play for them. They have a bye Friday night so that means he would have to play two back to backs. Past Don the singles options start to get questionable with Moore, Archer, Deutch and Lazzara. Archer is probably their best 2nd option but yet again he would have to play four times. Moore is someone who is not your normal singles player and his playing style might actually be good for the heat since he either aces you or double faults. Doubles are the strength but they are little thinner than years past and at this level since Buford is not a guarantee as he is most weeks I am not sure I like their chances to win 4 matches.
#5 Seed: Village/Johnson
This is the surprise team for sure but I for one am not shocked because looking at their roster compared to LBH/Hicks this team was just better and I am glad they have joined the QT dance. With that said now we have to play them on opening night. For them it will start with John Vacalis who has never lost a singles match in league or tourney play. Yep you heard me right and he took out Renwick (2 and 2) He is a force to be reckon with and by the way they guy doesn't lose at doubles either. Along with him they tout some good doubles players like Burt, Gregory, Smith, Deitrick and Sestak. Bebb and Montgomery are not too bad themselves although not quite to the level of the previous ones listed. My only apprehension in putting them high on the list is their lack of playoff experience and the fact that after this top 8 they drop off considerably. The rest of the roster are good 4.0s but not playoff caliber and in round robin play you need some bench strength. They do still have a shot at scoring some upsets and most of these guys are young so who knows maybe they will just play all the matches.

Cary,
ReplyDeletecan you give us the match times and matchups. You mention it and i think the rest time will be a big factor for a few teams.
5 good teams should make for some close and exciting QT matches!
ReplyDeleteHouston gets a 4.5 mens wild card invite today.
ReplyDeleteDallas gets hosed again!
ReplyDeleteDallas has 20 level 4.5 teams Houston has 14. I wonder how they decide?
ReplyDeleteWhat about 4.0 wildcards?
ReplyDeleteAnybody know when mid-year ratings come out?
ReplyDeletemid-july
ReplyDeleteWildcards are given on a lottery based draw. From what I was told each city gets 1 "name in a hat" for every 4 teams. So the bigger cities definitely have an advantage but won't always get the WC.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cary.
ReplyDeleteY - I am officially bored of ur pic. Can u get another one?
ReplyDelete"Y - I am officially bored of ur pic. Can u get another one?"
ReplyDeleteSure I will see what I can do.
wildcard system explained above sounds fair to me.
ReplyDeleteCary,
ReplyDeletethanks for putting a picture of me up on the blog.
Picture being the one shown in (-Y-)'s avatar?
ReplyDeleteCary, we will be looking for YOU in that first match.......bring it.
ReplyDeleteSorry guys but if you want to see a screw job just check out the seeding/ranking for the mens 4.0 dubs in S.A. Last year I promised myself that I would not sign up and play unless something was done about the t.d because I came close to getting screwed before I got a chance to pick up a prostatute in San Antonio. Glad I elected to stay home. Those gals are crooked bitches & I will stay home next year too. DON'T WASTE YOUR $$$.
ReplyDeleteYou been tipping a few glasses this evening Anon @ 11:13pm?
ReplyDeleteMy 2cents as I know a little about 4 of the 5 teams. Depth at singles counts here more than at cities. All 5 teams have good doubles players and there will be a lot of tiebreakers. But the singles should tip the scales for LT. Cary has decent depth but I don't know if his top two competes with Brandon and supposed ringer Eddie has been hiding (way to learn the system)
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comments about depth. But a team only needs to win 3 lines. I think Cary's team has the most talent and will get their 3 lines each match and win the QT. Anyway it will be exciting.
ReplyDelete"way to learn the system"
ReplyDeleteEddie has the only DQ of the year and has a few others sitting on 2 strikes. Seems like Eddie missed a few classes on the "system."
only self rates have strikes. Who are you taliking about?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteDo appeals get strikes?
ReplyDeleteI believe if ur at a certain level with an A or appeal rating then you can be disqualified and/or receive red flags. Cary, is this correct?
ReplyDeletePlayers who have appealed are treated exactly the same as self-rated players.
ReplyDeleteCary has decent depth at singles, but more importantly, I think his top two singles players are better than any other QT's top two singles players.
ReplyDeleteya, if everyone plays well SWAT will take the QT. but they'll have a tough time aga garland and hp in the dcc.
ReplyDeleteYep A, M and T ratings are eligible for DQ.
ReplyDeleteQT Winner will not see Garland or HP/Bob. They will play TBar and Brookhaven/Pearlman. I don't think there needs to be a poll to tell you SWAT or LTF and maybe even OC would beat both of those teams and head to sectionals. QT has big prize at the end of the rainbow.
It will all come down to the captain's lineup for LTF, OC, and HP in the QT.
ReplyDeletetiebreaks may be the key
ReplyDeleteYou’re correct! Eddie has a lot to learn about being a captain of a winning USTA Tennis Team. The biggest issue Eddie has is his ego. Once his ego starts to swell, all rational thought disappears. Eddie needs to slow down, listen to what others have to say and evaluate the responses. Eddie has a very good chance in winning the QT as long as his ego doesn’t get in the way.
ReplyDeleteAgree _ Eddie ia a little bit of a nutcase.
ReplyDeleteEddie's a nutcase. Eddie's a bad captain. Eddie's ego hurts the team. Eddie needs to learn the system..... Lots of people worrying about me. nice to be so important??? Truth is we do have the best team at QT on paper. still have to go out and perform. I am confident we will. If we don't, it will certainly be the captain's fault. I am fine with that. "To whom much has been given, much is expected."
ReplyDeleteEddie I think you do a fine job.

ReplyDeleteTo our Houston fan, I think Dallas put the Houston 4.0 team out of the Sectional tournament last year.
ReplyDeleteI had to work late last nite and slept the morning away. When did Wimbledon start playing a super Koman in the fifth set?
ReplyDeleteLubbock,
ReplyDeleteI would rather be the second best team in Texas than have to live in Lubbock.
9:13,
ReplyDeleteI agree, Lubbock does kind of suck.
(.Y.) Need to change the pic to "I would like to be supported by Single Rich Mom's.
ReplyDeleteWhat a Wimbledon Match.
ReplyDeleteIf you get a chance and you have DVR'd it. There is the women's doubles finals tagged onto the end of the Men's singles Match.
The 3rd game of the 2nd set is incredible with some great digs and volleys including a racket behind her body volley. The full match is pretty impressive. (Obviously, the men's final goes without saying).
If you have it DVRd, still, definitely check it out.
Friday Night Results
ReplyDeleteLifetime wins 4-1 over OC
Village wins 3-2 over SWAT
Lifetime won 4-1 with last week with Hill tanking a line to keep his rating.
ReplyDeleteVillage had best 2 players out for both losses this season. If they are in they will beat Team Bazaan.
What about Saturday matches??
Not sure about Hill tanking any line, but Lifetime won a hard fought match and should win again.
ReplyDeleteTeam Pirate is in trouble though. Village can win both singles lines, which means big problems for "Unlucky Thunder" and crew.
It is so nice to be getting the playoffs started again. Not sure about Cary's blog entry though saying that LTF was the favorite in the fall. Hill was out, Mudsam and Myers both had arm injuries and were not close to being at full strength. Those 3 guys are at top of game right now which makes a huge difference. BMO, Brinkman, and Kennedy are 20-1 this season. 2 late additions look to be strong. (Y) and Bennett seem to add depth they did not have in Fall. Looks like a City Championship for Lifetime to me.
It didnt appear that Hill was on top of his game last week against oakcreek when he got his ass kicked by an average singles player... cant speak to mudsum but it does appear that myers is in top form based on his major zone victories.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that (Y) is decent but not very fit. Is that the same bennett that plays on the ltf 3.5 team? If so who is he going to be playing for in QT's?
Eddie,
ReplyDeleteI could go back and pull entries and comments but all I remember was how amazing you all were but then lost twice in flight play. I seem to remember a certain statement, the only two losses we had were against the two sectional teams and so we are now in the top 3 then you all ended up 3rd in the Red Flight??
Bennett, I would be shocked if Kaiser let you all use him. You will see Chris Jones as well. :)
I am hoping the Black Panther and any other scorned Lifetimers will come out on Sunday afternoon and cheer us to victory.
Make sure and not deliver too many bagels or you may not have 8 players for the DCC.
What's the use? The winner of the QT is the lucky one who will get strummed by The Big Boys at DCC.
ReplyDeleteScorned Lifetimers can come out and root for your team to win your first or Second match of the weekend Sunday afternoon or maybe root for you to get a line off Lifetime. That will be the extent of the cheering.
ReplyDeleteIf HP/Buzzard bring the A or B team they should win without a doubt. If he bring the C team, now that will get a bit shakey.
ReplyDelete"I have heard that (Y) is decent but not very fit."
ReplyDeleteVery true statement I am very out of shape.:(
HP/Buzzard is more like HP/brateworst. Thay have the heart, guts, muscles and tongue to get it done, and you know they will be good.
ReplyDelete"(.Y.) Need to change the pic to "I would like to be supported by Single Rich Mom's."
ReplyDeleteLOL I did not see this post until now. This also is a true statement.
HP has way more tongue than heart or muscle
ReplyDeleteOverheard a lady saying her husband would play singles all four matches for Brookhaven - Bartlett. Looks like Buford and Lazzarra are out for the tournament... Big blow to their chances
ReplyDeleteIf that is true that would be a big blow but I find it hard to believe unless there is something Don couldn't get out of but since he plays tourneys almost constantly I find it hard to believe he wouldn't be ready to go.
ReplyDeleteLazarra out, hmmm not sure anyone would notice.
stay hydrated boys its gonna be a hot one. keep the iv close in hand.
ReplyDelete4.0 flight 2 at sectionals:
ReplyDeleteDallas
Austin
Wild Waco
Lubbock
QT
just received my schedule
I for one cant wait to read next week the excuses Eddie comes up with for why ltf lost the QT! He always comes up with something good (at least in his own mind)! They will really miss Forest and Takashi in the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteLifetime is so overrated!
That is a very weak pool for the Dallas champion. Looks like you won't have Somabut tanking this year. That pool is very attractive.
ReplyDeleteWhere is Houston and San Antonio?
Is there a Dallas Wild? If so, who is in their pool. Cary needs to know who he will be playing.
Flight 1 Teams
ReplyDeleteFort Worth
Wild San Antonio
North Houston
Corpus Christi
Wild Dallas
First match is at 7am. Yuk.
Ft. Worth is supposed to be very good.
Question about line calls:
ReplyDeleteLet's say it's a pivotal point in the match, and the other team hooks you on a call. Per USTA rules, is the opponent allowed to challenge the call and request a replay of the point, or do they have to request a line judge who can actually see it happen on future calls? Some guys out there have a bad habit of hooking at opportune times...
Thx
I know and LTF is the worst......
ReplyDeleteThere really should never be a reason to replay a point (unless there is a let due to outside interference like a ball rolling across your court). If you got hooked - too bad it happens (hopefully on accident). If you feel it was on purpose you can request an official but it is for future points only.
ReplyDeleteI got hooked bad with a couple bad calls by a guy named Getz in a 3.5 tournament a while back. The bad calls were all at critical points in the match. It was really obvious and really pissed me off. You can call for an umpire but the damage has already been done.
ReplyDeletePlease no Getz Talk on the 4.0 blog. Thank you in advance.
ReplyDeleteIt does look like a really good Sectional draw for the Dallas 4.0 winner (GTC) and a tough draw for the 4.0 Dallas Wildcard team(HP/Somabut).
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have played all the teams, and I really don't know any teams that make bad calls at this level. There are always going to be balls that look in from your side of the net, but I don't see bad calls. I really don't
ReplyDeleteWasn't Takashi 2 years ago? How many more years do we have to go before we can officially stop "missing him" on the courts?
ReplyDeleteI just need to know so that I can mark my calendar.
Maybe you need to see the folks at Key-Whitman.
ReplyDeleteThat sectionals bracket looks good. that means we have a great shot at getting to Nationals after winning QT and City. Things really seem to be coming together for us.
ReplyDeleteB. Mo. if tennis link is correct then it appears that takashi last played for your 4.0 team in July of 08. You better get your dates and facts straight!
ReplyDeleteI doubt he keeps a calendar. He probably just over heard someone else saying that a thought it sounded good so he wanted to try it out.
ReplyDelete"MORRISON"
ReplyDeleteWell Shit, Damn, Hell! You Are Right!!! Okay - I stand way corrected.
ReplyDeleteI really thought I was too young to be having senior moments...
Did somebody just frame one???
ReplyDeleteIf I had won 2 major zones in a row and, during league season, my captain screwed up so bad that I couldn't go for 3 in a row I would quit that team!!!
ReplyDeleteNo - Those are called a "Hill" I think there was supposed to a challenge match about that.
ReplyDeleteBesides I still stand by my unofficial stats that most of my frame balls go in... with just a few occasional ones that go over the fence.
ReplyDeleteor into the pool
ReplyDeleteGood luck everyone!
ReplyDeleteBlame Eddie if you like for Myers not going for the 3peat, but I think Myers would tell you that he had that SP match on his racquet in 3rd set tiebreak. that would have been the 3rd win and sent LTF straight to cities and Brandon to defend his Back 2 Back titles.
ReplyDeleteNo matter Lifetime will just have to get to Nationals the hard way now.
That's nice coming from a guy who has only been to sectionals as a spectator.
ReplyDeleteThe Dallas winner should easily make the semis where they will probably play Fort Worth or possibly Wild Dallas.
ReplyDeleteOutside of Dallas, who are the top 4.0 teams this year???
ReplyDeleteHouston (both teams), Fort Worth, San Antonio (both teams), NETX, Waco, Midland, Austin
ReplyDeleteAll good teams
It will be quite a battle!
ReplyDeleteIf size of ones appendage is related to ego... my vote would be for Eddie!
ReplyDeleteAre you talking inversely proportional! I'm also a little afraid of how you know that ...
ReplyDeletewww.vaseline.com
ReplyDeleteThose playing in the QTT today will need a hefty supply! Borrow Eddie's stash if you run out...
Lifetime will need a lifetime supply!
not sure what these last few posts are about. seems like we are going off the deep end a bit.
ReplyDeletei don't get it either.
ReplyDeleteSomeone has seen Eddie's dick and it apparently isn't impressive!
ReplyDeleteany updates on the QT???????????
ReplyDeleteLT won 4-1 I think and Brookhaven won 3-2.
ReplyDelete*Village won 3-2
ReplyDeleteNice match with the Village tonight. I can't say it was pretty tennis but Dwight and David got it done when they had to.
ReplyDeleteI cheered and picked for them to make the playoffs but I knew they would be a handful and unfortunately I was right.
Good luck the rest of the way for everyone, we are going to lay it all on the line in the morning and try and stay alive and avenge our regular season loss to Brad and the gang.
Liftime won 5-0. Told Unlucky Thunder to watch out for Village. Bad match up for Cary and Crew due to the strength in singles Village has.
ReplyDeletebig Match in the Morning for Cary. Bigger match with Village and OC meeting.
Go LTF!!!
victor didnt play well - to inconsistent. trae and cary played well and had a shot but village was better at the end.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to LT for winning 3 tiebreakers in doubles against solid OC teams. OC is a singles player or 2 away from competing for the cities.
ReplyDeleteJohn Vacalis of Village must be good based on his record and beatdown of Noaman. If he can play four good matches, they have a chance but still an underdog to LT.
Congrats to OC. They were really a much better team than the score indicated. 3 tie breakers again in doubles. Some incredible doubles players they have though.
ReplyDeleteThanks Yoda
ReplyDeletemay the force be with u.
ReplyDeleteHigh Point Bazan destroyed Brookhaven this morning 5-0. All straight set wins.
ReplyDeleteLifetime Beat Village 4-1. Vacallis is real deal beat Hill 7-6 6-1. OC beat Brookhaven 3-2. looks like showdown for a chance to challenge lifetime for OC & HP at 11am.
ReplyDeleteLifetime is looking really good. Clearly the best team in the QT this weekend. I think they'll come into the DCC as the favorite this coming weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe favorite? Get real man.
ReplyDeleteman, lifetime is soo good. people better watch out at sectionals
ReplyDeleteHP was definitely overrated this season. If LT plays to win this afternoon, HP will probably finish fourth of five.
ReplyDeleteLet's slow down here a bit on the LT talk. They won all three doubles lines against OC in three sets, so didn't exactly dominate all the teams they played. 14-1 in lines won so far though is pretty impressive although I think that may be a statement about the other teams in the QT. I just don't think LT has what it takes yet to compete with the top few teams in the DCC.
ReplyDeleteWe will see about that. Lifetime was 14-1 in the matches that counted this weekend. that is what i would call dominant. We had two tough matches with OC in the past 2 weeks, but came out 9-1. Several 3 set wins or not. 9-1. OC is better than at least 2 teams that are in the DCC next week. can't wait to get started. See you at sectionals.
ReplyDeletewhich two teams, Eddie?
ReplyDeleteMost teams that are good don't have to keep telling everyone how good they are. LT only chance at city is to be opposite side of both GTC and HP.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, the best two or three teams could be in the same half of the DCC draw. I don't see LT beating either HP, Garland or SP. If either of these three teams are in LT's half, LT will not make it to the final day.
ReplyDeleteAre we going to petition the DTA against a major and minor league flight bracket? This outrage cannot stand! lol
ReplyDelete>Are we going to petition the DTA >against a major and minor league >flight bracket? This outrage cannot >stand! lol
ReplyDelete>July 12, 2009 4:54 PM
What? Just get out there and play!
Ok! The fun really starts this coming weekend when the really teams are going to be playing!
ReplyDeleteDraws are out. 3 best teams in one bracket. HP, Garland and SP. Either LT or TBar on the other side. I would make LT a slight favorite.
ReplyDeleteWhay are they playing Friday night?
Is SP really among the top three teams? I'm very skeptical.
ReplyDeleteYes! DTA conspires to send LT to Sectionals. Any room left on the bandwagon Eddie I'd like to hop on for the ride. I can carry the water. Corey and Phy are out so a lot less trash talking on the 4.5 side so you'll have to carry the torch as my favorite blogger. Go Eddie!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Lifetime and Eddie on an impressive weekend.
ReplyDeleteHP and LT do seem to be the teams to beat on paper for next weekend considering the draw. LT will need to continue to find those Doubles victories. They have an edge in singles but will get their run for their money. The other teams have some strong doubles players so it will likely be more challenging then this weekend.
Good luck!
would be better for the DCC to be a round robin. more matches aga top teams = more fun.
ReplyDeleteI think the LT TbarM match could be very interesting. If Tbar can get a split in the singles I think they could take two of the three doubles matches. LT has one very good doubles team and the other two will be good, but beatable.
ReplyDeleteI think the QT tournament showed that LTs doubles teams are not any different than any of the other good teams doubles teams.
Eddie and LT,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your QT win.
Looks like Tbar gets a free ride to sectionals.
ReplyDeletearent the city's round robin?? dont you have to win your group to advance
ReplyDeleteYes, two groups of three. Have to win your group round robin to advance to the finals.
ReplyDeleteMost teams play only 2 matches at DCC. We used to play a lot more.
ReplyDeleteWE PLAY MOST OF OUR LEAGUE MATCHES AGAINST WEAKER TEAMS AND WHEN WE FINALLY MAKE THE DCC WE PLAY 2 FREAKING MATCHES.
ReplyDeleteJust win and you'll get your third.
ReplyDeleteHow come the 4.0 winners do not have a picture????
ReplyDeleteBlue Flt: If TBar can win one singles they have a good chance to win 2 doubles. Sam gives them that chance. BH has no chance.
ReplyDeleteGarland has the best 2 singles players, but can they win a line of doubles? Terrell is their best doubles player and will want revenge against both SP and HP.
The 5.0 guys play: winner 2nd vs 3rd vs 1st. That really sucks! There has been a concerted effort by the DTA to play fewer playoff matches at all levels.
ReplyDeleteYep no pics for LTF, you guys were gone so quick. Maybe I can find one for you all.
ReplyDelete(Y) no picture because between your fat body and Eddies fat head they couldnt fit the rest of the team in one!
ReplyDeleteI have lost a little weight:( I think I could have fit in the shot.
ReplyDelete-Y- did look a little slimmer this weekend, but he appeared like he had no energy.
ReplyDeleteThat's because I am still fat:(
ReplyDelete
