COTTON BOWL CLASSIC Registration Deadline is Sunday the 14th
Just a friendly reminder that the registration deadline for the Cotton Bowl is Sunday. If you want to play tennis in 2008 this is pretty much your last chance.
I just want to make one response to a couple of previous posters. I always hear people talk about how great Dave runs his tournaments at Brookhaven. I really like Dave and I like playing his tournaments, but I have never once played a tournament where my match did not start after the scheduled time. At times, I have even waited up to an hour for open courts. I think people just get distracted by the fancy club and comfortable waiting area. If you were sitting outside in August and waiting an hour to play you would feel differently. I have run many tournaments and our number one goal is always to get matches on and off the court as quickly as possible and keep players' waiting time at an absolute minimum. In my experience, Brookhaven tournaments do not accomplish this goal.
However, I agree that his tournaments are 100 times better than DTA tournaments. They only use volunteers and many of them have no experience running tournaments. Once at Fair Oaks there was a shift change at the tournament desk and the new person was left alone to run the desk without ever running a tournament before. It became a disaster with 50 people in line in the shop and up to 6 courts being left open at a time.
Ummm, well, I don't know about that but the indoor courts at brookhaven sure make it hard to see the ball. Are they trying to save $$$ with low voltage light bulbs or are they on the cutting edge of being green?
As far as I can tell, J. Narcus never won a major at 3.5 or 4.0 and he is now entering this tournament as a 4.5?? Won't that just screw up the draw for legitimate 4.5's? I can understand a player wanting to test his ability against higher level competition but until Marcus can demonstrate that he is competitive at 4.0 (or 3.5 for that matter)it seems absurd for him to be testing the waters at 4.5
If anyone really cared about what you think about J. Marcus playing in the 4.5 level, then we'd all have to worship you for all of your great knowledge and wisdom; not to mention how great a tennis player you are in the 2.5 level. shut up
Look guys, it was an honest mistake. I thought I clicked the 4.0 box and hit 4.5 by accident. I contacted DTA and they will not allow me to change it so here I sit.
For the Record, there are at least 40 other Men in the 4.5 draw all worth more discussing in this thread than me.
Am I a 4.5? Not at this moment. Will I get killed? Possibly. Possibly not. Who knows? But the whole point in playing tennis for me is to get great exercise, have fun and do what I can to win the match. The majority of y'all out there are taking stuff like this WAY too seriously.
On a serious note, I did win three matches this year in 4.0, but two of them, I had to bribe to let me win and would have been four wins, but towards the end of the third set, Trae B. gave me my money back at Waco after having second thoughts. :-D
Lastly, this is my one and only comment I will make on this subject. I'll see everyone next weekend.
Jonathan you DO NOT need to explain yourself!!!! You CAN DO whatever you want/need to because you are a FREE MAN and the anons can kiss your a**. Please don't defend yourself (to the anons) over something this petty.
Jonathan you DO NOT need to explain yourself!!!! You CAN DO whatever you want/need to because you are a FREE MAN and the anons can kiss your a**. Please don't defend yourself (to the anons) over something this petty.
I would have gave you that Waco victory if you would have offered me more than $1.02! That wouldn't even buy me anything on the dollar menu at Mickey D's after you add the sales tax?! As it was, I gave you a set while Forrest and Eddie were distracting me - what more do you want?!
Assuming Wescoup has been playing he and Huffman are clear favorites. Jason is a great player but doesn't have the results of the other two. Wescoup won his last 4.5 major zone he played in Houston, which happens to be the biggest of the year. Huffman usually doesn't play 4.5 and we will see why when he rolls through the draw.
To the guy that thinks he can beat 3.5 olayers left handed - I don't care if you are a 4.5 or a 4.0, if you are right handed and think you can beat any of the top 20 3.5 players left handed, you must be on crack
What is your beef with Getz? I have played him in tournaments and he was a nice guy that does not have the best strokes in the world but runs everything down and gets it back.
Coredawg, unfortunately I totally agree with your prediction. Wescoup and Huffman are the clear favorites of those mentioned. Wescoup should thrive on the indoor courts at Brookhaven and be very tough to beat but Huffman has the ability to do it. I will be very impressed by the player who takes them down. I was very fortunate to have beaten Justin at Sectionals and I know he would love a chance at revenge.
To whiney poster at 1:30 If your opponent is making bad line calls, get an umpire or say something at the time. Don't get on the blog a year later and complain. How pathetic. Did Getz kick your butt? Probably
I agree it wouldn't be surprising to see an unseeded player win 4.0 and I'll bet good money that an unseeded player will win 4.5 with JD probably not in top form. This is actually one of the toughest draws in 4.5 this year that I have gone to. If Vik was playing I would say it was the toughest. In addition to those already mentioned, Matlock and Kiron are tough players as well although I don't know about their singles prowess. I'm guessing a lot of seeds will get knocked out early. All I know for sure is that the #2 seed will not win the tournament. Little surprised Coredawg is missing out on the competition but he probably has holiday plans. I wish Huffman/Wescoup and Branch/Kiron would have played 4.5 as well but I guess they wanted more competition in doubles. The doubles draw looks pretty competitive without them still. Looks like it may be worth driving out Sunday to watch the later rounds after I get knocked out. Looking forward to seeing a lot of good tennis even if Brouer is out there bringing down the level of play.
Are you kidding, I love Marcus. He gives me entertainment in life. What with those beautiful breasts and pulled-up shorts, he's a treasure. And then when he starts mentioning his "4.5" forehand, he makes me smile. I can say this cause I actually have beaten him. But why post my name and ruin the fun? -Anonymous Chicken
Kern, you are too modest when it comes to your results..you should walk onto the court in a leather jacket with a giant boombox over your shoulder blaring, "Welcome to the Jungle"..that would hysterical.
Kern is definitely a 5.0 player and should fair very well in Cotton Bowl Tourney. He pretends to be a slow old man on the court but has cat like reflexes and a lot of HEART on the court.
This is absolutely amazing. 72 posts to a tournament that hasn't even posted a draw yet.
Well since we are looking at "Favorites" in different draws, I like Lynn Khaing, Jonathan Renwick and as a darkhorse, my main man, Cleve Walker in the 4.0 Singles Draw. Proving you do get better with age.
Let me start by saying I haven't looked at any of the draws.
Jason, thanks for your input. Had I known that you had beaten Justin I would have given you more credit. I would have loved to play but I go out of town at the end of December every year so I haven't played this tournament in years. From the sound of it I wouldn't have had much of a chance anyway. I can't see Wescoup losing this time of year when stamina isn't a factor, assuming he's been practicing.
In 4.0, I don't think Brouer or Phelps are expecting to do well. Phelps admittedly can't play more than one match in a day, thus will not make it to the semis. Steven has the ability to make a good run, but he faces the same issue. He doesn't play much singles so one long match and he's done.
Good luck to all and I will be checking the results in Missouri. Let's try to keep these posts somewhat clean or related to the topic so I don't have to delete anymore.
I actually can't delete any posts in this thread because I didn't create it. Check the tri-level thread. I just looked at the players signed up for open and the economy must be better than I thought. Half of the draw would not even win a game off of the players who will make the semifinals. A lot of you like to criticize my ego but if you want to see ego, check the open draw. I don't understand why these guys are playing open. Many of them are kids that could be playing in the junior divisions or adults that couldn't win the lower divisions. T.J. would beat all of them 0 and 0.
The sad thing is that this many players will make all the real open players play two or three pointless matches before they get any competition.
Seems odd that the face of Dallas tennis would leave the state when the areas largest tournament comes to town with the best players from across the state. I guess lossing out in the first round would be embarrassing. 8-:{}
to the 12/17 @ 8:44 am anon poster- There's only one thing you can beat left handed and you'd have to have a magnifying glass and tweezers to get ahold of it and since you can't find it any other way, well at least when you do find it, that makes you feel man enough to post your shit on this blg.
Most of this is too damn funny, but ummm that last one fell a little short.
You must feel pretty stupid, kind of like when George left a VM on the machine and wish he could take it all back. You know if you would create yourself an anonymous login you could go back and delete dumb post like that.
You don't know me but my first name is Kirby and I usually post under anon, but anyway,I was just wondering what it would take to have one of my post deleted?
Sorry 9:20. I was talking to 7:53 because he referred to me at 7:38 and all I wanted to do was the same thing as 7:35 who was disappointed at 5:02 because he was confused with 8:55. Please accept my.....
I'm glad I could raise the quality of this thread by threatening to delete posts. If I wanted to read immature posts with no merit I would go to the Houston blog.
Very funny Kern, thanks for clarifying on your prediction..I'm changing your boombox entry song suggestion from "Welcome to the Jungle" to "Hit me baby one more time"..and you just won yourself a new on court heckler buddy.
Look, there's no greater motivator than being made fun of. I really feel this will be a net positive for Jonathan, although I know the manzierre company where Jonathan shops will be sad to see him go.
The DTA needs some volunteers to help work the different Cotton Bowl sites (Brookhaven, Canyon Creek, Las Colinas, Bent Tree and Northwood). If you have an interest, in helping out, please contact Ngoc (office@dta.org) for details.
Wow in the 4.5 Draw they put Huffman/Kiron vs. Matlock. any of those 3 could win the tournament but 2 will be out by the end of the 2nd Round!! Also interesting 2nd Rd will be Hillsmeier/Pollard. A sleeper will be Tom Murray if he has been practicing with his son.
One last, One last thing. I never brought this up, but USTA called me and DQ'd me 2 weeks before GTC went to Nationals, letting me know I could not play anymore 3.5 tourney or league play.
This tournament is run by the DTA.
ReplyDeleteSo you know that it is the best run tournament around.
[Sarcasm mode off.]
DTA runs tourns better than league -> different people involved
ReplyDeleteNot so secreative ->std seeding and draw processes
I can not wait to play in the tournament I have not played tennis in a long time so hopefully I will not do to bad:)
ReplyDeleteCotton Bowl is still a DTA event and it is not run as good as Dave Ware runs his tournaments at Brookhaven
ReplyDeleteAgree, Dave Ware is very good at running tournaments _ nice guy too
ReplyDeleteMarcus, Jonathan - Plano, TX - NM4.5s
ReplyDeleteUmm, did you hit the wrong button Jonathan? You would have probably lost 1st round at 4.0.
In my experience, confidence is a huge part of playing winning tennis,
ReplyDeletePlaying above your level and getting your ass handed to you does not make you a better player,
While it can provide a measuring stick to where you need to be, it won't improve your game.
Just my 2 cents
I just want to make one response to a couple of previous posters. I always hear people talk about how great Dave runs his tournaments at Brookhaven. I really like Dave and I like playing his tournaments, but I have never once played a tournament where my match did not start after the scheduled time. At times, I have even waited up to an hour for open courts.
ReplyDeleteI think people just get distracted by the fancy club and comfortable waiting area.

It became a disaster with 50 people in line in the shop and up to 6 courts being left open at a time.
I've played several tournaments at Brookhaven and never had a match start late except for inclement weather. Maybe Dave just doesn't like you.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know when the draws will be posted?
ReplyDeleteThe difference between a Fair Oaks tournament and a Broohaven one is about 300 more entrants, for brookhaven.
ReplyDeletewhen nancy runs a tournament he requires all the guys to wear pink panties. otherwise he runs a decent tourn
ReplyDeleteDave is better than Nancy at running tournaments plus he runs much bigger tournaments _ which are more difficult.
ReplyDeleteNancy is still in Fantasy Land.
Ummm, well, I don't know about that but the indoor courts at brookhaven sure make it hard to see the ball. Are they trying to save $$$ with low voltage light bulbs or are they on the cutting edge of being green?
ReplyDeleteI would sign up to play the Cotton Bowl but over the hollidays I don't plan on being sober that long.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I can tell, J. Narcus never won a major at 3.5 or 4.0 and he is now entering this tournament as a 4.5?? Won't that just screw up the draw for legitimate 4.5's? ReplyDeleteOK enough with the namecalling (although I agree that Marcus is going to get his butt kicked) Any other predictions?
ReplyDeleteAt least he has the guts to play at a higher level than he is, unlike all of the sandbaggers that we give a hard time to. Good for him.
ReplyDeleteYou know, one day Jonathan will win one and when he does it's going to be half of the Anon's laughing at the other half.
ReplyDeleteHas JM ever made it past the 2nd round of a 4.0 tournament? Does he feel he would not be challenged in this 4.0 draw?
ReplyDeleteThe fact is he is playing up 2 levels. His 4.0 rating is not official until Jan 1, 2009.
Look guys, it was an honest mistake. I thought I clicked the 4.0 box and hit 4.5 by accident. I contacted DTA and they will not allow me to change it so here I sit.
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate all the attention though.
I was once going to enter the open draw in the Grapefest tournament, back when they offered prize money.
ReplyDeleteI figured it would probably be the closest to pro level players I could play with.
I have hit with pros at the challenge at Tbar before, But have wondered what it's like to play a match vs a pro level player.
For the Record, there are at least 40 other Men in the 4.5 draw all worth more discussing in this thread than me.
ReplyDeleteAm I a 4.5? Not at this moment. Will I get killed? Possibly. Possibly not. Who knows? But the whole point in playing tennis for me is to get great exercise, have fun and do what I can to win the match. The majority of y'all out there are taking stuff like this WAY too seriously.

4.5 contenders - Berg, Montgomery, Kern, Huffman, Wescoup.
ReplyDeleteAll others are playing for consolation.
Anons are fair and kind people.
ReplyDeleteAgree with that list - but no JD Miles?
ReplyDeleteAssuming Wescoup has been playing he and Huffman are clear favorites. Jason is a great player but doesn't have the results of the other two. Wescoup won his last 4.5 major zone he played in Houston, which happens to be the biggest of the year. Huffman usually doesn't play 4.5 and we will see why when he rolls through the draw.
ReplyDeleteanons: the heart and soul of the blog
ReplyDeletei am really surprised that trea b. did not sign up to play 4.5
ReplyDeleteCorey - Kern beat Huffman at sectionals. How's that for results?
ReplyDeleteJM--great that you're playing tennis for exercise, have you thought about mixing in a salad and an ab routine?
ReplyDeleteWESCOUP RULES - what has he ever done to deserve the slam

NTRP Men's 3.5 Singles
ReplyDelete#1 seed Getz, Michael
Who wants to jump this guy in the parking lot?
Anon: 8:35
ReplyDeleteIs that supposed to be funny? Why don't you see if you can beat him on the Court instead of making yourself look like a moran
I would but I would have to play left handed to get down to the 3.5 level.
ReplyDeleteWhat's a Moran?
ReplyDeleteLike a Mormon
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?
To the guy that posted that he would beat getz with his left hand, you must be a joke how about you tried beat someone in your level if you even play.
ReplyDeleteTo the guy that thinks he can beat 3.5 olayers left handed -
ReplyDeleteI don't care if you are a 4.5 or a 4.0, if you are right handed and think you can beat any of the top 20 3.5 players left handed, you must be on crack
I know several players that are right handed, but play with 2 forehands and thus would smoke any 3.5er left handed.

ReplyDeleteGetz calls bad lines / he did it against me last year. also he's an arrogant turd

ReplyDeleteIf your opponent is making bad line calls, get an umpire or say something at the time. Don't get on the blog a year later and complain. How pathetic. Did Getz kick your butt? Probably
More whinny ass 3.5's
ReplyDeleteThere should be a height restriction to get on this blog that starts at 4.0.
^
ReplyDeleteFunny :)
4.0 singles is wide open. I don't see any clear favorites.
ReplyDeleteJust being factual _ Getz is an ass and he makes bad line calls - always on critical points
ReplyDeleteWouldn't surprise me to see 4.0 won by unseeded Brouer or Phelps.
ReplyDeleteI agree it wouldn't be surprising to see an unseeded player win 4.0 and I'll bet good money that an unseeded player will win 4.5 with JD probably not in top form. ReplyDeleteWow, you are carrying around a grudge about that Getz guy making bad line calls on you over a year ago? You need therapy

And then when he starts mentioning his "4.5" forehand, he makes me smile. I can say this cause I actually have beaten him. But why post my name and ruin the fun? -Anonymous Chicken
ReplyDeleteThere we go again with talking mess about getz give it up talk about something else.
ReplyDeleteThere we go again with talking mess about getz give it up talk about something else.
ReplyDeleteI wonder which trailor park or senior citizen center Getz will stay at while he is in town?
ReplyDeleteKern, you are too modest when it comes to your results..you should walk onto the court in a leather jacket with a giant boombox over your shoulder blaring, "Welcome to the Jungle"..that would hysterical.

ReplyDeleteGood question. It seems to say that Dallas 3.5 players suck. Especially those whose last name is "anonymous"
Oh Getz IS a senior citizen. You can tell by his posts?
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely amazing. 72 posts to a tournament that hasn't even posted a draw yet.
ReplyDeleteWell since we are looking at "Favorites" in different draws, I like Lynn Khaing, Jonathan Renwick and as a darkhorse, my main man, Cleve Walker in the 4.0 Singles Draw. Proving you do get better with age.
lifetimer I agree I think Jonathan Renwick will do well in 4.0's
ReplyDeleteWho is Ryan Montgomery. He's got to be the favorite in the 4.5 Draw. He won it last year in straight sets.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe based on that fact he didn't get seeded.
You obviously don't understand how seeding works.
ReplyDeleteLet me start by saying I haven't looked at any of the draws.
ReplyDeleteJason, thanks for your input.
I'm I missing something? I have not seen one post that has been deleted.
ReplyDeleteI actually can't delete any posts in this thread because I didn't create it. Check the tri-level thread.
ReplyDeleteI just looked at the players signed up for open and the economy must be better than I thought.
The sad thing is that this many players will make all the real open players play two or three pointless matches before they get any competition.
posts have all been very "clean"
ReplyDeleteI seriously doubt Cary would threaten to delete any post(s). He just doesn't seem like a guy that needs to feel that important.
ReplyDeleteAnd from what I have gathered, OCBL would put it up for a vote before deleting anything.
You must be special.
Seeds are out for the tourney
ReplyDeleteSeems odd that the face of Dallas tennis would leave the state when the areas largest tournament comes to town with the best players from across the state. I guess lossing out in the first round would be embarrassing. 8-:{}
ReplyDeletejust like nancy to threaten to delete posts that he dosnt agree with. must make him feel important. what a loser ...
ReplyDeleteThe new thread is who can post the most obscene tennis related comment.
ReplyDeleteto the 12/17 @ 8:44 am anon poster- There's only one thing you can beat left handed and you'd have to have a magnifying glass and tweezers to get ahold of it and since you can't find it any other way, well at least when you do find it, that makes you feel man enough to post your shit on this blg.
ReplyDeletehow was that one oc bl?
ReplyDeleteYour momma had no trouble finding it. The stank that experience produced makes me vomit at night - sometimes twice.
ReplyDeleteSorry Warren didn't see that the seeds had changed. It is the #3 seed who will definitely not win.
ReplyDeleteI wish Trae B. would wear Jonathans cloths style. I would love to see his shorts ride up his crack. PURRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
ReplyDeleteJessica
Sorry, your mamma didn't see the seed had changed direction either. It caught her in the eye and across the cheek.
ReplyDeleteMost of this is too damn funny, but ummm that last one fell a little short.

ReplyDeleteLMAO - Come on now Cory this blog has been setting new lows since its inception.
ReplyDeleteWhile humorous - this blog aint worth shat.
Very funny Kern, thanks for clarifying on your prediction..I'm changing your boombox entry song suggestion from "Welcome to the Jungle" to "Hit me baby one more time"..and you just won yourself a new on court heckler buddy.
ReplyDeleteCertainly I agree with you in the offseason. With no tennis being played, there is little to talk about, resulting in threads like this.
ReplyDeleteyou got to admit, that was pretty damn funny about J Marcus.
ReplyDeleteNo it wasn't funny. Jonathan is a very nice guy and does not deserve this type of treatment. Put yourself in his place. Now shut up
ReplyDeleteHe should put himself in my place,
ReplyDeleteOn the treadmill!
This thread aint nothing compared to the Houston Tourney Blog. Houston and Austin league blogs pretty tame. Somebody need to spice them up.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know where the 3.5 doubles play? I have been told that the tournament is held at various locations?
ReplyDelete3.5 will be played at Kiest tennis center.
ReplyDelete"3.5 will be played at Kiest tennis center."
ReplyDeleteWow that is not close to brookhaven. Thanks
I hope you don't take anonymous seriously. Kiest isn't one of the sites.
ReplyDelete"I hope you don't take anonymous seriously. Kiest isn't one of the sites."
ReplyDeleteI was wondering why the hell we would be playing all the way down there.
Look, there's no greater motivator than being made fun of. I really feel this will be a net positive for Jonathan, although I know the manzierre company where Jonathan shops will be sad to see him go.
ReplyDeleteJonathan has a big ego and it can take a few blows.
ReplyDeleteThe DTA needs some volunteers to help work the different Cotton Bowl sites (Brookhaven, Canyon Creek, Las Colinas, Bent Tree and Northwood). If you have an interest, in helping out, please contact Ngoc (office@dta.org) for details.
ReplyDeleteI will gladly assist in putting together what I feel is an unbiased and fair draw.
ReplyDeleteOther than that you have my $40, so pay some people.
The DTA sucks thats why more people dont volunteer. DTA league administration is particularly arrogant and obnoxious.
ReplyDeleteThe DTA does a good job on limited resources. Be nice. It’s the holiday season.
ReplyDeleteWhat do u mean "limited resources"? The DTA wastes a ton of $ on very expensive offices which are not needed and underutilized.
ReplyDeleteIt kinda of like the auto CEO flying to DC in their corporate jets asking for a tax payer bailout.
I would have chartered a jet to D.C. to ask for a bail out if I thought those scum suckers would have handed it to me.
ReplyDeleteI don't like football, there are too many brutes that play it.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the football beacause the Cowboys suck!!!
ReplyDeletedraws appear to be posted, can you start a new thread for the actual tourney?
ReplyDeleteBrookhaven is not hosting any of the adult events. Thats a shame.
ReplyDelete"Brookhaven is not hosting any of the adult events. Thats a shame."
ReplyDeleteI believe the open level plays there.
Is there no consolation bracket for doubles?
ReplyDeleteWow in the 4.5 Draw they put Huffman/Kiron vs. Matlock.
ReplyDeleteany of those 3 could win the tournament but 2 will be out by the end of the 2nd Round!!
ReplyDeleteDamn, wrong thread.
