Regular Season Homestretch...

The season is about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the way through so your team needs to make a statement now or be prepared to watch other teams at playoffs.

5.0  I was wrong as TBar takes down Perkison 2-1.  I see Loren Collins didn't play so that probably cost him.  I was pretty sure Johann Jooste wold win any line he played considering he is one of Baylor University's historical best players.  He beat Timmy Allin, another 5.5, by a mere 2&2.  TBar and Lakes are still undefeated  Lakes have both Village and TBar to go.  I guess I will take TBar but still think Village has the best team.  This is one tough league.

4.5
Flight A:  JCC and Fretz are both undefeated.  They play on June 7 so a lot will be determined there.  Corey's crew still has the Greenhill makeup that could be tough but I think Greenhill with 2 losses is just giving everyone playing time.

Flight B:  Lakes and Oak Creek are both undefeated.  Oak Creek is usually pretty good but their usual geriatric lineup oftentimes makes winning difficult.  They have added a few younger guys and it is paying off.  They play TBar this week and should be a tough match.  I like Oak Creek to win 3-2.  Lakes still have both TBar and Oak Creek in the next few weeks.

Flight C: Village is the last undefeated team and they have beaten 2nd place Brookhaven already.  They have the lighter part of the schedule remaining so they should win this flight.  I picked BH then Village but looks like I mixed them up.

4.0
Flight A:  Two cpatains of which names I have never heard lead this flight and are undefeated.  Oasis and Oak Creek are undefeated.  They play each other on 6/6 for what appears to be winner take all.

Flight B:  Everyone's favorite whipping boy High Point leads this with an eye popping 6-0 & 30-0 on lines leads this with second place Greenhill at 5-1 with losing 7 lines.  (5 of those lines were to High Point).  This one appears to be done.

Flight C:  3 teams with 1 loss.  Oak Creek has another captain's name I have never seen with  loss and a win over McKinney and Brookhaven.  Brookhaven and McKinney hook up this weekend in a likley win or go home.  I take Oak Creek and this weeks winner for 1st and 2nd.

Flight D: Garland is the only undefeated team but they still have 1 loss Oak Creek remaining.  I think everything gets decided on 6/6 as lines will be very close.

I got a ton of views and responses on the mixed posts.  I may go to exclusively mixed with all the attention you gave it.

  1. interesting that Corey's 4.5 team has not played that makeup match yet. Original match was scheduled for 4/26 and everyone else seemed to get their match in that day.

  3. DTA email to captains about playoff formats said - "However if faced with inclement weather, as the tournament organizer the DTA maintains the right to alter post season play (i.e. number of advancing teams, format, etc…) or possibly even cancel the QT.”
Can I decide to play my matches at season end, or wait to see if I want to pay? And the DTA wonders why they don't get the love they think they deserve.

    16. While Kyle is probably best singles player Kelley is best mixed player. Kyle is not a 5.5, not even close. A solid 5.0 maybe. I don't think SP will bring a strong lineup today. Rumor is Kelley out of town and their best 3.5 is hurt .

      Delete
    17. First of all I don't think Alan will take his 3 weakest teams. Secondly no doubt Kyle is solid but he actually lost the last 8.0 match he played at nationals. Should be fun. If Corey brings his best I can see an upset brewing.

  7. Let us bring back Le talk again:

I checked out the records of the High Point team:
    Tony Le - Fall (0-2) 40’s (7-0) Spring (3-0)
    Shawn Arcaria - Fall (0-4) 40’s (6-0) Spring (4-0)
    Ryan DelaPaz - Fall (0-2) 40’s (7-0) Spring (3-0)
    Tim Newman - Fall (0-4) 40’s (3-1) Spring (2-0)
    Doug Voss - Fall (0-3), 40’s (4-0), Spring (4-0)
    Stephen W. Bennett - Fall (0-2), 40’s (1-1), Spring (1-0)
    Owen Wilson - Fall (0-5) Spring (1-0)
    Victor Tran - Fall (0-3) Spring (4-0)
    Ryan McClanahan - Fall (0-4), Spring (1-0)
    William Scott - Fall (1-3), Spring (4-0)
    Mo Mahmoud - Fall (0-7), Spring (6-0, 1/2 at 3.5)

    Andrew Alarid - Spring (3-0)
Ajay Srrinivas Krishnamoorthy - Spring (1-0)
    Hai Nguyen - Spring (1-0)
    Brian Gilson - Spring (2-0)
    Carlos Aguilar - Spring (1-0)
    Jorge Aguilar - Spring (2-0)
    Matthew Lenz - Spring (1-0)

    Steve Kemp - Fall (4-0 at 4.0, 0-3 at 4.5), 40’s (4-0), Spring (3-0)
    Jarad Kemp - Fall (0-2 at 4.5), Spring (4.0)
Andrew Kinson - Fall (0-1 FW), Spring (1-2 FW)
    Paul To - 40’s (0-7)

Interesting that in the top group of 11 guys, they were a combined (1-39) in the Fall, (28-2) in 40’s, and (33-0) in the Spring. Apparently they all got some new racquets for Christmas, or maybe started taking lessons, because their games really improved.

    1. Analysis of Tony Le's 7.0 Team (guys):
Jorge Aguilar – 3.5 – is probably a 5.0 player but at the worst a top level 4.5 player – see history below
Tournament history from 2014 in Open division:
      - Cotton Bowl singles – won 1 match and lost 2nd round match
      - Cotton bowl doubles – lost opening match – pleayed with Jean Nguyen
      - Charlie Weaver – lost opening match; won one and lost one in consolation rounds
      - Looks to have played Boys 18s tournament in 2009;
      League history from 2014:
      - Played on Oak Creek/Erbe 4.0 division – Played 4 doubles matches with Carlos Aguilar – Lost all 4 matches – scores were 6-4,6-4; 6-1,6-4; 6-0, 6-2; 6-2, 6-1;
Carlos Aguilar – 3.5 –Now Carlos is not on the team but most likely he will join – he is definitely a 5.0 player – is currently the #2 ranked player in Men’s Open Doubles – see history below
      Looks to have played Boys 18s tournaments in 2010;
Tournament history from 2014 in Open division:
      - Charlie Weaver – Open Doubles – Won the Doubles title with Ferny Avila
      - Played in Poke-Jos Top 8 Mens Open Doubles – won 1 match – no other matches played
      - Cotton Bowl – Open Doubles – won 2 matches lost 1 match – played with Ferny Avila
      - Charlie Weaver –Open Singles - won 1st round match and lost in 2nd rd
      League history from 2014 – losses I mentioned above and singles loss 6-2,6-2;
Ryan McClanahan - 3.5 - it looks like he might have played for something called Tennis on Campus while he was in college at OU. So must be a younger guy. His team seemed to be good and they seemed to have gone far in USTA competition. For him to be playing USTA recreational tennis while he was at OU, he must have played in high school and was probably pretty good. He probably wanted to keep playing competitively. He is most likely a mid-level 4.5 player
      Victor Tran – 4.0 – is probably a good 4.5 player
      Tony Le - 4.0 - probably 4.5
Mo Mahmoud - 3.5 - lots of 6-0,6-1,6-2 defeats in 4.0 in the fall - however regained form this year - its a miracle; probably a 4.0
Thanh Tran - 3.0 - this is a straight up joke - Thanh won Brookhaven Mixed 4.0 doubles (4 matches); he is most likely a 4.0
James peter burger – 3.5 – was not able to find much on burger – plays mostly 3.5 and mixed – has a lot of wins but nothing out of the ordinary –probably a top 3.5 player
Chuck Lee – 3.0 – was not able to find much – he played in one match at #3 line and won – anytime a guy is self-rate 3.0, we can call bullshit on that – let us be conservative and call him a 3.5 player
Jose Aguilar – 3.5 – not much history on Jose

      Delete
  8. Start with 4.5's playing 4.0:
    Tony Le
    Shawn Arcaria
    Owen Wilson
    Ryan DelaPaz
    Tim Newman
    Andy Alarid
    Andrew Kinson
    Doug Voss
    Steve Kemp
    Jared Kemp
    Hai Nguyen
    Brian Gilson
That's more than half the roster and doesn't include players rated 3.5.
So let's see, 13 4.5 players that tanked down to 4.0, and 4 3.5, players that are better than them. Nice roster. Dallas should be proud. This is not an isolated incident but a multiple season manipulation that has also added self-rate ringers. Regardless of where you stand on the ethics, you have to applaud the effort and commitment, not to tennis, but to bastardizing the system.

  9. We need to bring back Le Player of the Day talk:

Le player of the day: Andrew D. Alarid (next alphabetically after Aguilar(s)
After several years of winning records at 4.5, Andrew joins HP/Le in Spring 2014 and loses all of his matches in straight sets. Bumped down at year end to 4.0, just in time to join Tony's 4.0 Spring team.
Next alphabetically is Shawn Arcaria -
after going to 2013 nationals in 40+ and sectionals in 18+ and getting bumped up, he didn't tank well enough in the Fall and was still 4.0 for Spring 2014, he then tanked every match in Spring and Fall to get back down to 4.0 for Spring 2015. Very solid player especially when paired with a ringer.
    Comments?
Skipping Bennett, not out of level
    next is Ryan DelaPaz
won all 2011 4.0 spring matches until he played Houston, won three major zones
started tanking in 2014, bumped down to 4.0
    undefeated at 4.0 in 40+ and 18+

  12. The real issue is much bigger than a self rate here or a fall tanker there. The raw quantity of blatantly cheating on self rates and all the players that were coordinated in their efforts to tank back down to 4.0 is mind boggling. While you might hate the actions, the dedication and commitment to be the best at all costs is impressive. Tony Le as the ring leader will either succeed or fail while daring greatly.
This will either be a USTA slapdown or the end of league tennis as we know it.

    ReplyDelete

    1. What is the appropriate number? I guess you only have 1 or 2?

      Delete
    2. Maybe one self rate is appropriate within a half point variance. Tanking to manipulate your rating should not be tolerated, especially since it is blatant.

      Delete
  13. The other huge concern is the lack of action by the DTA to police its own leagues. It doesn't take much looking to find the problems. All you have to do is look. But that is hard to do when your eyes are closed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Please, the dta doesn't care. They just want the league fees. It happens almost every year. They just don't care.

  14. I hope the Usta does nothing and they get beat at sectionals. That would mean they spent the last year or two playing crappy tennis for nothing. It would at least make me laugh a little.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Nothing will be done as we have done everything by the book and legal and we will not lose at sectionals.

    ReplyDelete
  16. How can you self rate a 5.0 a 4.0 and say it's all legal? It states anyone who mad Nationals at college on campus must self rate a 5.0. Carlos A won college on campus nationals while at Baylor. At least have the guts to say your team cheated and we hope we get away with it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Tennis on campus shouldn't count towards your rating to begin with. Even at Nationals there are less than 5 guys in the whole tournament that are true 5.0s, if any, and it varies greatly from year to year.
Not to mention that it's college i.e. just about everyone at the tournament is from out of town and there to have a good time. The first day is competitive, after that those who roll out of bed and sweat out the night before the fastest will win.

-Someone who played Tennis on Campus.

      Delete
    2. But that's the rule. So breaking the rules is cheating. If you play high school singles you have to rate a 3.5 and some of those players are horrible. Just follow the rules, that's why they are there.

      Delete
    3. 3;12, that's actually not the rule anymore. so i guess its knowing them AND following them.

  18. thank you, "Anonymous on May 27, 2015 at 7:36 PM" for your analysis:

So, if this is a situation of such an obvious game manipulation, can USTA Texas Section DQ the whole team like Le's or the likes from Houston? And in addition to DQ, they should freeze the ratings of involved players at 5.0 for the next 10 years.

I think this kind of punishment would serve as a good precedent for other captains and players not to follow in the footsteps of such greedy captains... I mean everyone is trying to get some sandbaggers on their rosters but few accomplish a feat of having 16 of them on one team...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, an entire team can be DQ'd. Only in theist egregious cases. Usually takes awhile to get the okay to do it.

      Delete
  19. The most the USTA will do is make all of the self-rate 3.5 players either 4.5 or 5.0 and penalize Tony Le for the pattern of illegal behavior.
They should also penalize the obvious tankers because even though they are using the Fall league loophole, they are blatantly manipulating their ratings down. Likelihood is that nothing will be done about the tankers.

What do you think should happen?

    ReplyDelete
  20. In regards to tennis on campus, my doubles partner played and won the national championship. He currently plays competitively at 5.0, and he was not the best player on his TOC team. So I'm pretty sure there are more than a couple 5.0s in the whole system.

  25. This is a little bit trickier than the petition filed on kelley some years back. Just about every 4.5 captain in Texas was in on it. In this case it is just a few captains and certain players who werent asked to be on Le high powered team. I think these guys will have to win something before the hammer comes down. In kelleys case he was dominating mixed tri and combo and mens the year he took it serious and played for Thickett. I have a feeling something brewing at USTA office and it aint the morning coffee. Kelley has been moved up twice in 5 years, once by computer and once by manipulation of computer. All t's crossed and i's dotted before USTA will try this again. My gut feeling is season will be played out and then decision will be made. Tony Le is a very bright individual and knows every move will be scrutinized so he will be careful.
