So who said we needed Mother’s Day weekend off from tennis, obviously you all are chomping at the bit to play some good matches. So we have a:
BLOG CHALLENGE BLOWOUT WEEKEND!
Friday night @ Springpark 6 PM:
Mitchell McGowan/Gene Davis v. Keith Robinson/Steven Brouer
Some 4.0 playoff players who can’t wait until July to get it on.
Saturday morning @ Lifetime:
Marc Klamecki aka OC BL v. Brian Morrison aka BMO
Some big forehanded 3.5 players who can’t wait until their regular season matchup. Lefty v. Righty. Both are in a tough flight so they are looking for some tough practice matches to work up their skills.
Saturday/Sunday afternoon @ site TBD
Corey Noel/John Sisk v. Bazan/Jeromiiii (aka Batman and Robin)
This has been talked about and forgot about and then talked about some more. I am glad to report it looks like it will happen this weekend. Still checking with Batman but I have some backups in mind if he can’t make it. Any 4.0s want to volunteer??
In the works:
Prather v. Marcus REMATCH coordinated by John Kraemer
Details to follow soon…..
Did I miss anyone, let me know and send pics of your matches if you can.
Big John wants to bet money but I deal in the monetary value of humiliation so I want him to take a picture after we beat him maybe holding a sign about how great I am. I think I will put him next to one of those guys that stands on the intersection of Alma/Spring Creek that has the new home signs. Any suggestions on the saying I should write on there?
“Lucky Thunder is my hero” “I wish Lucky Thunder was my DAD” “Lucky Thunder for President”
Hey Cary I saw Jeromii play mixed a couple of weeks ago you might want to get your back up 4.0 person.
ReplyDeleteMPearson
Any 3.5 want to step up and challenge some 4.0 players. This is your chance to play up a level and not have it count against you.
ReplyDeleteThe playoff format was just published. 4.0 6 teams divided into 3 team flights. This is terrible for the 2 best teams if they get put in the same flight. Especially if 2 teams go to sectionals. We should email Jane and see if this can be changed. It is a lot more fun to have a 6 team round robin and get 5 matches.
ReplyDeleteHow can you have 3 flights? Did you mean 2 flights and each team plays the other 2 teams in their pool and then the pool winners play in a final?
ReplyDeleteIs there a link?
ReplyDelete4.0
ReplyDeleteQualifying Tournament – In the QT there will a total of 6 teams (divided into 2 round robin flights of 3 teams each). The teams that qualify are the four teams that finish 2nd in their respective flights plus the two 3rd place teams with the best record (determined by TennisLink standings). If the fall league winner finishes among these six teams, then the 3rd place team with the next best record will qualify for the QT.
City Championships – The 4.0 City Championships will involve 6 teams (divided into 2 round robin flights of 3 teams each). The 6 teams are the four teams that finished 1st in their respective flights, the winner of the fall league from the prior year, as well as the wildcard (QT winner). There will be two wildcard teams from the QT competing in the City Championships if the fall league winner finishes 1st in their spring flight.
It would be AWESOME to see HP and Springpark in the same flight and watch them battle it out for a shot at sectionals. Will the DTA release the format (i.e., which teams go into which pool, etc...)?
ReplyDeleteyou are right that would suck if two strong teams got put into the same flight. I really like the round robin tourney because it rewards having a deeper team.
ReplyDeleteOf course i am excited about the two 3rd place teams getting just for fun sakes but my team would still need a small miracle to make that happen but it keeps some more teams in the mix. Maybe we could have a Qualifying for the QT, just kidding. But I think this is official, no emailing Jane for help on this one. I think they have to do it this way due to the number of teams involved.
The Fall 3.5 playoffs positioning was by their record. Best record went in 1 flight, 2nd best went in the other. This makes the flights - one flight will have teams 1,3 & 5 (by record) and the other flight will be 2, 4 & 6. I assume that the playoff winner will probably be #6, but mathematically they could be higher. This should be the same for the 4.0 championships
ReplyDeleteLooking for a Victim Friday Night 6:00 pm Oak Creek Tennis Ceter.
ReplyDeleteAny Takers?
Eddie, Lifetime might actually get to play in the playoffs or at least the QT so you'll get your shot at the big boys.
ReplyDeleteLooks like everyone would want HP to finish in 1st place so that 2 of the QT teams will make it to the playoffs.
ReplyDeletePotentially 11 playoff teams. That is nice and can really reenergize a lot of captains out there (i.e., Cary).
FYI
ReplyDelete3.5
Qualifying Tournament - In the QT, teams finishing 2nd or 3rd place within each flight (six teams in total – divided into 2 round robin flights of 3 teams each) compete to determine one “wildcard” QT winner.
City Championships – The 3.5 City Championships will be either a 4 or 5 team round robin. Competing in the City Championships are the three teams which finished 1st in their respective flights as well as the wildcard (QT winner) team. In addition, the winner of the fall league from the prior year also advances to the City Championships. If the fall league winner finishes 1st in their spring flight, the spot of the fall league winner is vacant in the City Championships.
ok who is trying to motivate me. My team has booked summer vacations and said it is OK for me to play line 1 single the rest of the way in order to work on my 3.5 rating so I become a big free agent in the Fall at that level. But to be selfish and totally all about me which is my natural tendency those two extra teams should come from flight D, no offense the rest of of you but seriously come on you all suck. :)
ReplyDeleteshot at the big boys. We will see about that. How come anonymous didn't step up to challenge me. I see Mitch went with the doubles. I would play in this SP challenge.. just no one ready to mess with this Big Boy. Did I see someone from Oak Creek looking to play. Eddie
ReplyDeletethat does suck Eddie that your "opponent" disappeared. I think he was an out of towner possibly
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteEddie,
ReplyDeleteWith the four players in the SP challenge you would be 5th pick and that would only be if we didn't count spectators...
I am open to play Friday at SpringPark.
ReplyDeleteMPearson
Eddie,
ReplyDeleteNow you would be #6, Better hurry or you won't even be in the "elite 8" at the SP match.
Whoops, I forgot to sign my post.
ReplyDeleteMay 7, 2:08 pm, the one calling Eddie out on his dismay at lack of invitations, was by Mitchell Jay McGowan.
I love when people talk person to person trash under anonymous that is funny. I use to talk team trash. If you are going to talk about a specific person. use your name. Mitch I think that is you about me going quiet.. sorry. I called SP for Gene the next day and he was out and I got busy and you moved to doubles. M Pearson lets play at SP Friday night at the same time as the others. Eddie
ReplyDeleteMikey, you can't play Friday night,
ReplyDeleteyou're serving drinks. ;->
mjm
Very lucky Gene was out
ReplyDeleteOops. M Pearson can we do 7pm??? my son has a basketball game at 6pm. Eddie
ReplyDeleteI just figured out where SP is. I played a #1 4.0 singles match there last year and beat a young kid. had to be 18 or so. he was pretty good just young.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to play you Mike. let me know if 7pm is ok.
Anonymous. Quit talking trash unless you want to take it to the court. Eddie
Carey. You are talking about how bad Flight A is. I bet we are the only flight with 3 playoff teams in it. By the way Lifetime beat the undefeated top team in Flight B Brookhaven 3-2 in the first week cross flight match. Just thought you would like to know. Eddie
ReplyDeletedon't start Eddie or I might have to come take you out this weekend too. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are probably right there will be multiple teams from your group because past you and TBar the teams are atrocious (no offense, ok that was meant to be offensive) I know I may be biased but I think the top 5 teams in our flight would finish right behind High Point in Flight A if not in front of them since Springpark is in that group.
Eddie,
We actually almost did play last year at cities, since Kyle couldn't play Friday, Trae and I played each other for the right to play you. He beat me 6-4 so he got the shot at you, you all had a great match that night. I am not sure you would be a good match up. I like to play overweight seniors they match up well with my singles game. yeah you heard me donut eating 50 yr olds come and get me!!
funny. Looks like I will play Mike Pearson Friday night at 7pm at SP. He seems to have a good record. I like to play good players. I don't mind 50 yo donut eaters every once in a while though. Eddie
ReplyDeleteOh, that's going to be great having Eddie and Mikey P play at 7.
ReplyDeleteKeith, Steven, Gene and I can drink beer and heckle.
Eddie, I spoke no trash under anonymous to you, just for the record. I did challenge you, however.
mjm
I know it wasn't you Mitch. I did try to connect. Another day maybe. You don't seem to play a lot of singles though. Mike looks pretty good. Maybe if I bet him, I can be ranked in the Top 8 in Dallas? Eddie
ReplyDeleteNo offense Eddie but I don't think you could hang with Mitch. I do think you and Mike Pearson will be a good match, I will take you in a close 3rd set.
ReplyDeleteIn that case Mitch when can you play this weekend? How about Sat Morning at 9 or 10 am at SP Eddie
ReplyDeleteCary. I think you are barking up the wrong Tree. e
ReplyDeleteHey Eddie,
ReplyDeleteI know I'm available Sunday, not sure about Saturday yet, I may be working. I've got several jobs going on, and I'd like to get them finished this week. I'll know on Friday.
Feel free to email me at
info@dotdirt.com

Does anyone know the 4.5 playoff format?
ReplyDeleteFYI (sorry forgot about ya'll)
ReplyDelete4.5
Qualifying Tournament - In the QT, teams finishing 2nd, 3rd & 4th place in their flight compete to determine a wildcard (QT winner). There will be one wildcard (QT winner) per flight. Within each flight, the 3rd place team plays the 4th place team. The winner of this match plays the 2nd place team; with the winner of this match advancing to the City Championships as a wildcard team.
City Championships – The 4.5 City Championships will be either a 4 or 5 team round robin. Competing in the City Championships are the two teams which finished 1st in their respective flights as well as the two wildcard (QT winners) teams. In addition, the winner of the fall league from the prior year also advances to the City Championships. If the fall league winner finishes 1st in their spring flight, the spot of the fall league winner is vacant in the City Championships.
Eddie sorry for the delay yes 7 works for me. I will see you then
ReplyDeleteMPearson
Enrique – You have a great idea about getting the court in the barn with the observation booth and viewing area.
ReplyDeleteDavid and Jonathan – Ok, we’re setup for Saturday, May 10th @ 3:30 pm at Brookhaven on Court 10. Coaching will be allowed during the match. Cheering by spectators will be allowed between points. I will cover court and guest fees. I will also supply drinks (Gatorade) for the both of you. I will also supply an assortment of soft drinks and beer for spectators. I’m currently working on getting an independent referee for the match. A prize of some sort will be given to the winner. Let’s plan to meet in the viewing area between courts 9 & 10 @ 3:20. In addition to being the sponsor, I will also try and be the official photographer of the match. Please confirm that you’re on for Saturday.
All – Please feel free to come on out to Brookhaven and watch the big match!
The stupid poll will only let me vote for myself once. Judging by the results so far Steven must have figured out how to vote multiple times.
ReplyDeleteDavid and Jonathan – Yes, you can have more than one coach.
ReplyDeleteJust got caught up on blog info (kinda like catching up once a week on all my DVR'd shows) and I must say - WOW! Cary, you have created an exciting and entertaining atmosphere on this blog while managing to keep it polite and inviting so most folks feel comfortable enough to post their names. Well done!!!
ReplyDeleteKraemer, Prather, Hill and all the rest of you guys are halarious :). I love it! Keep it up.
Kraemer, you are a great promoter.
I'm going with Hill, Prather and Brouer/Robinson (since I don't know the other folks). GOOD LUCK to all!
Freeman,
ReplyDeleteHow is your 4.0 team coming? You going to be able to repeat?
You are right, it is refreshing to not read bunches of four letter words like some of the Houston blogging.
Kirby
Mitch,
ReplyDeleteI need to know, how is beer handled at your club? Is it like my Muni. High Point, no beer AT ALL! Or like a Country Club, where I can just put it on Jim Walters account? These matchups sound interesting, I may just attend.
Kirby
Haha...sorry keith only voted once but for us. Not sure who's doing the voting, think I may know of some but we'll see how it turns out on Friday. Should be fun
ReplyDelete--Steven -- baldy #2
Kirby,
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I decided to captain a 4.0 and 4.5 team this year (sound familar). It has been fun and frustrating at the same time. I'm not really sure how good either team is just yet but I'm hoping they both compete well in the Houston playoffs (if they can get there).
For my 4.0 team I certainly don't have any Ahmed's or Veilluex's (Kern was decent as well but he was easily replaceable) but my team is probably deeper than last year. We play Rice (they made it to sectionals with us the past 2 years) this Thursday so I'll know more about my team on Friday.
You guys look strong as always. How did all you guys manage to stay down at 4.0? It also sounds like your 4.5 team is doing well.
David,
It is great to hear from you. While I'm sure you'll be in Austin in November at the "elite 8" I'm pretty sure the only way I'll be there is as a spectator. Maybe I can play doubles with every top player in Texas and hope that their regular doubles partner can't play that weekend and they are forced to play with me. First, I have to convince them to play with me and I'm running out of Exxon stock so that might be a hurdle I can't overcome. However, it does look like my friends Tuyen and Ismael will be there though so Houston should be well represented in Austin.
Sorry, that last post was me.
ReplyDeleteKirby,
ReplyDeleteYou don't know what you're getting yourself into. Now the match is interesting for me too. I need revenge from our team tennis loss. I'm actually excited to play with you since we have never played before. You and I can sit back while John and Cary hit balls at each other.
Hey Kirby,
ReplyDeleteBeer is handled mostly by me at SP. You ice it down, I watch it for you.
Actually, it's BYOB. There is icewater on the courts.
Should be fun, looking forward to it.
Mitch.
John,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for setting all of this up, it is much appreciated.
Coaches? No problem. I hope that Cary agrees to coach Dave, that could only help my cause.
I'll do whatever I "can", to make this a fun atmosphere, and if there is time for round robin singles afterwards, that would be cool as well.
Hey Jason F, Good to hear from you. I saw you on another court in corpus, but I was so pissed after my match I just left. I think you know the guy I lost to.. he was good, I was bad. You are a good guy man. I will make sure to connect next time I see you. Eddie
ReplyDeleteBy the way, did you draw you father in the 1st round there :-)
Eddie,
ReplyDeleteI'm so out of shape it really doesn't matter who I play. I go into every tournament praying for rain delays with short sets and no-ad scoring :)
Yeah, you played one of my guys on my 4.0 team. Robert is a great guy with a killer forehand. I picked him to win the tournament before it started; however, I had no idea that Robert was actually in worse physical condition than I was (I know, that doesn't seem possible) so he completely feel apart in his next match against the backbaord that is Scott Flores (nice guy). Robert vowed to never play another set of singles again.
Don't feel too bad, in my opinion, there was noone in the Corpus draw that would have come close to beating Robert in the first round. You were just unlucky to get him in the 1st round, 2nd round might have been a different story.
Good luck tomorrow night!
Freeman. "Killer forehand" does not do that justice. It was hands down the best forehand I have played against. Funny. I hit a good kick serve to his backhand and he step around it and blasted the ball so hard crosscourt I was still following through on my serve when it hit the fence. See you soon. Eddie
ReplyDeleteDavid,
ReplyDeleteDo you need a coach for Saturday?
Jacques,
ReplyDeleteCome on out and work with Ed Ratcliffe and Enrique in coaching me. The more the merrier.
David Prather
lol - now this blog IS getting entertaining! First,
ReplyDeleteMitch, I will bring the beer - you handle it, you watch it, while Keith hits you a nice sitter. But you better watch it well, as I can drink it pretty fast.
Corey, glad to give you a chance for revenge, but as I remember you ARE a singles player, and I a doubles, so that should almost even it out - that will leave my partner, whom is a true 4.0 player, 3.5 wannabe, to deal with the 3.5 Sisk. And As you ARE a singles player, I may actually hit a few balls to you at net, to see if you CAN volley, and if so, then Sisk will then see 80 % of the ball activity from then on. In the end just maybe I will let you win so you will feel better about the team woodshedding.
J. Freeman, yes, a Captain's duty is never finished. I co-captain for my 4.0 team, and Captain the 4.5 team, and it does keep you busy. I do two teams, actually 3, mixed doubles also, that way I just know I will see the post-season one way or another. Your team last season has given me plenty of motivation to improve my tennis. Like I told John Kraemer, alls I see now is a big "H" on his chest. ha! I think you sat your best players last year before the finals, so you must have had plenty deep even then. I see you put a needle in there for Kern, ha, he ain't replaceable in doubles, singles, or mixed.
Cheers to All!
Kirby
It doesn't look like it will happen this weekend Kirby. Cary can't play Saturday afternoon and John can't play Sunday afternoon so....the anticipation continues.
ReplyDeleteIt would be fun to be in Dallas to watch the match between Marcus and Prather!
ReplyDeleteI would like you to be in Dallas to watch the match between Marcus and Prather
ReplyDeleteThat last post was from Beaumont
ReplyDeleteWas that Michael Getz that just posted? How do you know it was from Beaumont?
ReplyDeleteDavid Prather
Michael, actually it was from Lake Charles, La. as it was my Lisa that posted.
ReplyDeleteDavid Prather
Hey,David
ReplyDeleteNot Lake Charles, Beaumont, it was me. Mike Getz
Actually, I would like to be in Dallas to play the winner of Marcus and Prather. MDGetz
ReplyDeleteJohn K. thank you for your support. David have fun and win it for me!!!
ReplyDeleteI would love to be there but I am not able!!!! may the best man win!!!
ReplyDeleteLisa
The polls make the HP-SP match dead even as to who will win. My betting line of 3.5 games was way off if half the people would take HP with no odds. Another good bet is the over under on how many beers Gene and Mitch will drink during the match. I would set it 5.5 and take the over.
ReplyDeleteJim
Dave,
ReplyDeleteWhat's even funnier about this match is that I just checked the 3.5 Rankings and you and I are tied for 22nd place.
And secondly, I just can't believe that almost nobody thinks I have a chance at winning this second match.
Well.............I guess we'll find out tomorrow.
Lastly, I should be able to arrive on time tomorrow, but I am coming from McKinney, taking a Texas Defensive Driving class that ends at 3pm. (Results of trying to make it to that Abilene MZ tournament a couple of months ago.)
John K., Mike, Jacques, Enrique, and whoever else is interested. If there is time for a round robin king of the hill match for Saturday or on a future date, let me know. I, just like Dave, love to play, and the more competitors we have, the higher the level it will be.
Hey Jonathan, I usually root for the underdog, but tomorrow I'll make an exception. Really looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteMichael, you can play the winner, let's just set it up for some time in the future when you're up this way or when we're down your way.
And thanks Lisa
David Prather
Sorry to hear my match is cancelled but sleeping in on Sunday and not leaving the house all day sounds good as well. We will make it happen soon.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what nights/days are good and I will do my best. Tuesdays and Fridays are bad for me.
Is anybody going to Volunteer to be Jonathan's Coach,
ReplyDeleteOr are you leaving that to the voices in his head?
Yeah, there's got to be one guy out there, who's got my back??
ReplyDeleteIf not, Dave has inspired me for my "newest" icon.
Who is going to Waco? I am looking
ReplyDeletefor a Mens and mixed 3.5 partner.
To the anonymous poster looking for partners.
ReplyDeleteIt might help to post your name.
Not sure who rigged the poll to bump Keith and I to the lead, but thanks!
ReplyDeleteShould be fun tonight, weather looks perfect.
--Steven
Michael Getz, congrats on the great results in Corpus. You are really playing some good tennis. I can't wait until we meet again. That should be fun.

Great icon Jonathan.
I actually prefer OC Bl's Icon.
ReplyDelete--Mitch.
I have no idea how it works but I am sure they have the best of intentions. If they are seeding, this year they could have done a better job. I am not familiar with all teams but in 3.5, there could have certainly been a better process. The Flight C looks more like a 4.0 flight while A is rather week once you get past Garland. HP and Canyon Creek are fine but other than that it is a ridiculously week flight. Flight B is easily the most balanced but I think four teams in Flight C could win Flight B.
ReplyDeleteIn 4.0. Flight D is the flight that stands out as the ridiculous flight. Do they put all teams that they consider seeding in that final flight? Flight C in 3.5 and Flight D in 4.0 are ridiculous while the other flights are rather tame. Like 3.5, Flight D has 4 teams that could win in B or C.
