Combo Preview

Image result for combo
So, the next big event is 8.5 combo.  Impressively, this has 10 teams for 2016 so I’m assuming they will have two flights of five each.  That’s a minimum of four matches each, which makes playing worthwhile whether you win or lose.  Since we know the DTA professes not to read this blog, I hope they won’t mind if I take a shot at seeding the flights.  My flighting assumes all captain were playing their six best players (and the captains know who those six are).  And now, the players:
Flight One
Team Sisk: on the 4.5 line he has Kelly, Vassberg, Le, Pollard and Davidson; with the 4.0 line being manned by Blumberg, Abbruzzese, Luh, Pearson, Nguyen and Russell.  That’s a wide range of talent at each level but I see three potential lines that have the ability to beat anyone else playing.  Not a given, but I’d make this team the favorite.
Team Bearden: on the 4.5s he has Baishya, Traylor, Bearden, Robinson and Todd; with Covell, Zambrana, Sweeney, Barr and Kemp as 4.0s.
Team McHugh: Kirkpatrick, Soda, Wildeberger and Powell at 4.5; with Ragle, Patterson, Rainwater, Sampson and Dawson at 4.0.
Team Arcaria: Arcaria, Glasgow, Mudsam and Gerber at 4.5; with Shahab, Teterud, Bennett and Smith at 4.0.
Team Mills/Kanchi: the 4.5s are Fess, Coffman and Thrailkill; with Salinas, Fenter, Mills and Thakkar at 4.0.  It takes two captains to manage seven players in a six person event?
Flight Two
Team Kingsley: the 4.5s will be Kingsley, Hill, Lafavre, Shreiner and Foster; with Kingsley (son) Rodriguez, Kingery and Hanna at 4.0.  Some good players here.   This team should challenge.
Team Kanchi: the 4.5 line has Vatum (that name sounds familiar), Benjamin, Foster and Bage; with Kanchi, Rivera, Valaparta, Kommineni, Agarwal and Mickey at 4.0.
Team Myers: Bhate, Barta, Bomar and Rossouw as 4.5s; with Andrulis, Offenberger, Dendy and LaMoy as 4.0s.
Team Entrekin: on the 4.5 line he has Herndon, Agan, Holcomb, Spellman, Alexander and Theimer; with the 4.0 line Hendrick, Entrekin, Scott, Browning, Graham and Jeffcoat.
Team Iyer: the 4.5s are Iyer, Jett, Rodriguez and Neff; with 4.0s consisting of Rajani, Ramasami, Dewan and Delgadillo.

    1. How can he dominate with a 4.5 that had a losing record at 4.0?

    2. Lol, well done. Funny how they forget how to play tennis...while they're self rates.

    3. I guess that competitive loss to Jack Sock in the finals of a NATIONAL tournament FINAL sent poor little Vutam into such a spiral that he popped out 3.5.

      Delete
    4. Quit lying about Michael. He was not competitive with Sock. The score was only 6-2, 6-4 and Sock wasn't even an ATP pro yet.

    5. Kinda like they said they would represent Dallas at nationals? Botched the big prize. Maybe combo will be a consolation

    6. They lost because they didn't have Vutam.

    7. Sisk , Le and Kelley on the same team????? Boy is that the tankers trio! Tony forgot how to play this year, fresh off a Dallas suspension all Kelley does is go to THREE national events in FORT WORTH and big John Sisk slowly begins to cement his status as best combo captain in Texas. THE THREE STOOGES!!!

  2. Surely they weren't counting on the DQ'ed guy.

    1. After the decisions our fearless captain made, I am not sure he knew DQ meant he couldn't play anymore.

  3. Nice try 4:16. Lost to Somabut in flight play. Suspect lineup. Lost to Sisk at cities. Suspect lineup. Lost to Austin at sectionals. Suspect lineup. Isn't it obvious at this point?

    1. Interesting point. After all that talk, they didn't win nationals, they didn't win sectionals, they didn't win cities... they didn't even win their own pool! Every high stakes match, they brain cramped with a strange lineup and lost.

  4. You don't build a team like that to lose when it counts. Right??

  5. Team with the largest disparity between talent of the 4.5s and the 4.0s goes to team Arcaria. Only true 4.5 is Mudsum, and all of his 4.0s were former 4.5s at some point in a past life.

In the other flight team with low level players at both rankings and therefore no chance is team Myers.

Good luck to all but esp us!!!

  6. Great analysis! Would have to seed Sisk 1 and Queensley 2 despite his captaining blunders of past. Sisk somehow prob has the two best players in combo w Davidson fresh out of school and Kelley who it seems has always either just been to a national event, just won a national event or about to go to a national event every year. Team Raja prob third best team but based on 4.0 debacle last week I think it is Sisks to lose. Of course he and Kelley already have one of these titles under their belt. Should be interesting. Good luck to all!

    1. There is no question Kelley is the mixed king of Texas and would have to be right up there nationally. His FW team advanced to sectionals and his Dallas team might as well. His resume is downright gawdy. Alan has created a winning robot. With nothing to do I looked up his mixed record since 2005. It is 153-6. That my friends is SICK!

    2. When Voldemort goes to nationals in men's 4.5 and nationals in 9.0 mixed I will then admit to him being the best doubles player in Texas, until then 8.0 dominance means nothing!

    3. I am pretty sure nobody really cares about Mike Kelly that is not named Mike Kelly.

    5. Here is a scary thought!!! If Kelley gets to 4.0 he and his mentor Alan a will have a 7.0 team that would prob win 8.0 or 9.0 league. Those guys playing 7..0 would be criminal bwahaha

  12. You sure you got the flights right? This is what DTA sent out:

  13. Myers has a self rate that plays d3 college tennis. Should be a 5.0. That's the rule. Will he even make it to the tournament, let's see.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I saw that. Only reason he would is bec Russouw prob begging them to overlook it . My guess is the DTA knows and just waiting for a formal complaint. I have seen him play. Sisk has two better players on his roster

  25. So....the dta will cancel combo instead of moving indoors. How many indoors are in Dallas? It just shows, screw tennis players. We have your money, why should we care about the event.

They would rather send no one to sectionals then give the best teams a chance to advance. I guess they don't want to see Kelly go to another sectional tournament.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If Sisk had all his players just send his team. BY FAR the best team in the event.

      Delete
    2. Yes, they took two national appearances from Kelley, manipulated his rating, suspended him for dominating and no one wonders why no backup plan? Gimme a break. Had he of not signed up for combo we would be playing indoors.... Lol

      Delete
  26. What???? Cancel instead of moving indoors in one of the largest indoor tennis cities in the world????? NO REFUNDS NO EXCEPTIONS. The DTA IS A COMPLETE JOKE. Ratings manipulations, bogus suspensions, letting a self rate college player who played a D3 match in April play in combo ? Yes, all of above and more. Completely incompetent!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Why are you people so surprised with the "give me money, no indoor court, no refund plan " the DTA has adopted? You really expected otherwise??? This is a money maker so why spend the profits on indoor courts for the players. Those that thought they would do that are in la la land. Can you imagine as a teaching pro keeping your members hourly charges if you were rained out? And being told "sorry, your loss we can't move indoors"? Criminal!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you do realize that DTA does not own the indoor facilities?
The clubs aren't going to kick members off their indoor courts to facilitate rainouts.

      Delete
    2. The members weren't using the courts. We were there. The courts were open. We could have started at 9:00. I know for sure that the clubs are ghost towns that late. You must be a board member of the Dumbass Tennis Association.

  28. Evidently being able to play at all is also a privilege

  29. Just checked. There are 10 teams in +.5 combo but only one country club team. Not enough to care about. Watch the women go crazy. Then they might care.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The men registered have pakd about $4,750 in combo fees. And the women have about three times as many teams.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Total it will be about $27,000 I am told. Not enough to book indoor courts but enuff to keep an attorney on retainer for certain individuals

    ReplyDelete
  32. So has all Combo play been canceled for the weekend? My captain says we are still good for Saturday morning matches?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ok DTA. Please consider this for next year. This way sooooo many people don't hate you.

When you see the forecast for rain all weekend long, this is what you need to do. Call lifetime and Brookhaven. Book 3 courts at each facility all day long. Place the men at one facility and the ladies at the other. Lifetime always has courts open and so does the barn. That shouldn't be a problem. Then you go from 7:00am to 10:30pm playing 1 set no add. Matces should take about 30-45 minutes and it might not even take that long. The clubs will charge you, but I'm sure each team would pay an extra $100 to get to play. I know my team would. And after listening to EVERYONE complain last night, I'm sure other teams would as well. This way we could have all played and enjoyed YOUR event.

You need to start putting the tennis players first and not the money. I'm glad we donate tons of money to the organization. It's a great thing WE do. But, the more you keep treating the tennis players and events like crap, the more people will play out of Ft Worth. And I can guarantee you that if Ft Worth combo was this weekend, we would all be at TCU playing matches.

From someone who knows how to run an event and puts there players first.

FYI, all clubs had indoor courts open last night at the time of the matches. Even if you just use 1 court and get things going, we could have played.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I heard team Alzuro played their matches last night despite the rain.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Why the quick presumptions that not playing this weekend = cancellation and no refunds? My understanding is that we are rescheduling to another available weekend: Sept 30 - Oct 2

    ReplyDelete
  36. It is. They didn't tell anyone that until this afternoon. What going to happen to tri level. That was schedule for that weekend. And tri level is a national event. Are they moving that?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Now there's no rain tomorrow after 9:00am. They could have waited to cancel the entire event. They should know the only thing that changes more then the weather is executive directors of the dta.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm really enjoying the pool party I'm attending, but you know what else I would be enjoying, playing f'n combo. A little premature cancellation.
