So much for bad weather, it is actually great tennis weekend for playoff tennis. The guy in the sky must be a fan of the USTA.
So rather than reposting any thoughts I thought I would let all three levels just post up any interesting results or thoughts on this weekend.
I wish I could make it by but I am booked up with shopping, work and watching my wife running downtown in a half marathon.
Best of luck to you all but especially those teams that can't earn the wildcard, we stay at homers are rooting for you all the most.
Just saw the first results, sorry Lakes that I was right...so far, don't give up hope. I just found $20 in an old pair of jeans so only $500 more for my membership fee.
ReplyDeleteRusseisow,
WTF, you told me you were a lock. I am never going to spell your name right again. Wait did I ever?
What a thrashing Westlake & Huffines took today; guess they're done. Look forward to next spring-not
ReplyDelete4 tie breaks wow GTC, Greenhill lost?
ReplyDeleteBoth Brookhaven teams won......WOW..........
ReplyDeleteFretz beat Westlake 4-1.
ReplyDeletecary right about lakes, wrong on gtc predicted loss. 500
ReplyDeleteCary – You have way too many excuses.
ReplyDeleteGTC was getting absolutely hammered in 4 matches and came back to win 3 of them. Great tennis last night on both sides.
ReplyDeleteSam Grand gives grandpa a spanking beating him 4-1, almost 5-0 had a tie break go the other way. Do they have what it takes to knock out big John today at Noon ??
ReplyDeleteCary -
ReplyDeleteThe BMO/Gerber poll is too funny!! Where did you get those pics?? Did they actually pose for this?? LMFAO
Complete waste of time this morning. I'm so glad 50 guys could drive out to Brookhaven for no reason this morning. Very disappointed with the disorganization of the DTA/USTA. A simple e-mail/phone call/answering machine message/anything, could have saved everybody a lot of trouble.
ReplyDeleteNow we will drive out there at noon for the same thing probably.
You had 8am matches. DTA would have had to call you guys at like 630. Plus the forecast didn't really call for rain. Pretty sure the weather caught everyone off guard.
ReplyDeleteBe mad at Pete Delkus.
Sucks though that you all were in that predicament.
Why the complaining Corey, what happened?
ReplyDeleteAll this could have been avoided had they scheduled the playoffs the week or two AFTER the season. WAITING a month to schedule them mid-December was a total f-up on DTA. I really do not understand the reasoning behind it. It's like scheduling the World Series for December, or having the Super Bowl in April. Just doesn't make sense.
ReplyDeleteYou just equated 4.0 fall city playoffs with the Superbowl. They really need to make a "Dog Show" type movie about these leagues.
ReplyDeleteIt was really stupid to wait to mid-December to hold the fall playoffs. The DTA just lacks common sense.
ReplyDeleteThe DTA should have called captains around 7:00 am. Then the captains could have called their players. Or at least have a phone number at Brookhaven that everyone could call. The DTA is fat and happy and they don't give a shit about players.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the DTa being fat cats but you guys fail to realize how much you get for your $35 for league fees = No City Playoff Fee and no Sectional Fee to play. Here in Southern it is $23 for local league, $20 for Mid-Season, $25 for State, and then $30 for Sectionals. Not invluding balls and court times.
ReplyDeleteso what is the deal, did any games get played today or what?? I checked tennis link and see no updates. What is the word??
ReplyDeleteCheck again, the results have now posted
ReplyDeleteJust by going on the early results in 3.5, I would have to say Fretz is the best team
ReplyDeleteNo matches were played until 2 p.m. They could have called anytime until 8 a.m. The forecast I saw on Thursday said chance of rain on Saturday. Either way, all that was needed was a phone number to call in case of a weather delay, just like every other tournament in the United States.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually more upset that they didn't have a single indoor court reserved. Isn't that why they schedule the playoffs at Brookhaven?
ReplyDeleteOn a brighter note: Congratulations to Hai and his team for advancing to the finals. They outplayed us and deserved to win. Then they went back on the court with less than an hour break and beat an undefeated team (I think) 4-1.
They will be tough to beat tomorrow. I'm also thankful there were no issues with line 1 doubles. When I saw that matchup I was expecting fireworks that never came. Good sportsmanship all around.

ReplyDeleteYour right Coredawg. Who schedules an outdoor tennis tournament in mid December and just expects it to be sunny and warm?? Friggin idiots, I thought Brookhaven was chosen BECAUSE it was indoor????
ReplyDeleteFretz got whooped 5-0. So much for them being the best
ReplyDeleteLOL
Lakes vs. High Point in 4.5 final @ 4 pm.
ReplyDeleteTo me it is very easy for HP to win this match. Lineup decision is obvious against the Lakes. I will be interested to see how it goes.
ReplyDeleteI'm very surprised by the lineup that Royal Oaks put out against the Lakes, especially after the conversation I had with Rothwell yesterday. Maybe it wouldn't have mattered since it ended up 4-1 but I would have expected Joe to play singles and Rothwell and Oscar to play line 1 dubs. I can hardly say much though since my team went 0-2 over the weekend.
ReplyDeletebartlett is annoying as well as word verification.
ReplyDeletebartlett is an acquired taste to be sure, but he is fun.
ReplyDeletetaking out Garland is impressive, nice job Country Clubbers.
OC nice win at 3.5.
Word verfication was necessary, sorry guys, too many things slipping thru about male enchancement.
HP and Lakes 4.5 Final is very interesting. Battle of the best doubles teams. Edge to HP for having stronger singles though.
ReplyDeletecongrats to Highpoint. way to go guys!!!

First, as for the person hiding behind the Anonymous said...
ReplyDeletebartlett is annoying, not if you know him A@#Hole, and by the way,he WON THE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP. More than you can say, so SHUT-UP and stop hiding behind the anonymous signature. My name is Phil Lazzara and I play for Brad Bartlett.
Bartlett is annoying and even his own team members were apologizing for his "vocal" actions today.
ReplyDeletecongrats brookhaven. steady and solid all around
ReplyDeleteLast thing before I never visit this site again, Country Clubbers, you know it, maybe someday you can afford to be one, hobo...
ReplyDeleteNo reason to get so worked up over an anon, Phil. BH won in style, although it was very, very close. Congrats to Sisk and his crew to a really tight final. Excellent tennis and sportsmanship all around. And MVP to Chris Ellis!!!
ReplyDeleteWho let the 3.5s out of their cage?
ReplyDeleteHe is angry and elitist.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Sisk and your crew to a really tight final. Excellent tennis and sportsmanship all around, except for the hook on match point at line 1 doubles
ReplyDeleteBe a man and quit hiding behind Anonymous signature.
ReplyDeleteSigned City Champion
Brookhaven acting so classy, as usual....

ReplyDeleteHe is angry and elitist.
Don't forget rich and handsome.
Give them a break it's the first time they have ever won anything at 4.0.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget he gives great reach-arounds in the BH shower.
ReplyDeleteCongratz BH, but have some dignity and class. You make Lifetime look like humbled saints.
ReplyDeleteBTW, it was just FAll Cities. Take it easy.
Phil is not BH and BH is not Phil. Too bad that he doesn't represent BH with more class and style.
ReplyDeleteThis is Phil Lazzara and I just recieved a call from a team member and who ever is using my name, STOP.
ReplyDeleteYikes Phil, congrats on a win. I believe I was the one who said "country clubbers" didn't mean it as in an insult but strange you took it that way.
ReplyDeleteas I mentioned I like Brad, he is a little abrasive but I like that he actually cares enough to get excited about tennis, I know I can be the same way and why the hell not I always say as long as you are not being rude, etc.
Good luck in the Spring, oh wait you will be playing 4.5 Phil.
Brookhaven is tough and beat the best the city had to offer. They absolutely have earned it. I agree that Ellis should be MVP; furthermore Mattes is one of the best playing / nicest / humble players in Dallas. Congrats to you guys on a win well deserved.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Bartlett and Smith for a strong finish!! Bartlett was great, hospitable and passionate about his team, can't wrong him for that. We were the same, but they got more cheers than us, you have to rally the troops!
ReplyDeleteSmith pulled it out after being down in the breaker, GREAT JOB DON.
It was a great weekend, once we got started.
Mitchell Fix, great to have met you!! You have got a solid game, and your match easily could have gone your way.
Thanks to all my GTC men, email to follow. Great run!!!!!
Thanks John! You put together a great team and I'm sure your team in the fall will be a contender as well.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Brookhaven! Give my regards to Harlee.
See everybody in the spring!
Men's 3.5 FLight C wins --- Everyone gave shit to the flight C all season long as being the "weakest" flight. Shows you can't tell a damn thing by trying to determine how good a team is strickly through tennis link.
ReplyDeleteCongrates Oak Creek for the win !!
Will BH even be able to play in the playoffs in the Spring (this team anyway)? Isn't there some rule about players being bumped up, certain %, etc...?
ReplyDeleteNice coverup PL
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that I had a wonderful time playing this weekend in the city championship.
ReplyDeleteTo whomever said that our team apologized for Brad, I don't believe that happened on any account unless they were just trying to appease someone who was acting upset about it. Brad was verbally rooting for his team, and I don't think you can fault anyone for doing that. Brad is an amazing captain to play for, and does everything he can to give us all the best chance to win. Brad was responsible for putting our team together this fall, and I think he did an amazing job. If you look at all of our matches, we did not flip lines in doubles once when everyone was there. Brad never played any games with any team we played. He put us in straight up, and if we got beat then we got beat.
Second, during the fall I have gotten to know Phil Lazzara, and I can promise that Phil was not the individual posting the insulting posts. You can take that or leave it, but that is my opinion regarding those posts. Also, for those of you that are thinking it, I was not the team mate who called Phil.
Third, all year everyone has stated that we did not have a shot to win the fall championships. We all worked hard, and went out and won them. Even just before this tournament, the readers voted our team fifth to win the city championships. A team (Oak Creek) that we defeated in the regular season was picked to win the whole thing. It is not really fair to fault us for being excited that we won.
I know this was a book, and I hope that no one took offense at anything that has been said. It was not meant that way if you did.
I look forward to playing all of you in the Spring, and meeting and making more "tennis" friends.
Bobby Smith
Congratulations to all of the city championship teams this weekend. A quick note on Brad Bartlett: I have played against him and had numerous conversations with him and have never heard him say an unkind word about anybody, nor ever do anything unsportsmanlike. He does not deserve to be in anybody's crosshairs. Let's go back to talk about how I'm a liar or something.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I have to say it was an incredible accomplishment for John to have two teams in two different levels in the finals. Sometimes the chips just don't fall your way. I know John pretty much moved in at Brookhaven this weekend so it was still a lot of hard work and a great achievement for him and his teams.
High Point was clearly the best 4.5 team all weekend and they deserved to win the championship. That should make recruiting much easier, right Hai?
I vote no on word verification btw.
So will Hai's team be the frontrunner to take over a dominant OC run at make it to Sectionals?
ReplyDeleteHai is a great recruiter so I don't think it's impossible. It will be interesting to see if any of his players join Somabut's competitive 4.5 team though. I would think the fact that they won the fall would help him keep players and recruit.
ReplyDeleteGood to see some fresh faces in the 4.5 finals. Lakes/HP did it old school by relying on good doubles teams as opposed to having dominant singles.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all the Fall winners. For 4.5, it was nice to see 2 teams from the same flight battle it out in the finals. Lakes won the regular season match but HP won the finals. Team of Jeff J and Tom Wagner beat everyone as predicted and Hai/Jimme from HP proved yet again to be a serious playoff doubles team. Clint at singles and Hai/Jimme will give anyone from Branch a good match. Hai, your a phy pham away from taking down Branch. Thoughts???
ReplyDeleteCome on guys. While HP did a great job this weekend and nobody likes to see new blood in 4.5 more than me, we all know the same teams will advance to sectionals in 4.5 next year. Just look at the ratings and who did and did not play in the city championships. It will be a different story in the Spring. Branch's team has only gotten better since last year.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Dallas will get 2 nexts into sectionals next year. If so, it should be a really fun Spring watching teams fight for that 2nd spot.
Sorry but that HP team would not do very well against Branch's spring team. They might be competitive in doubles but Branch would be up 2-0 in singles most every time. You guys overrate Clint for some reason in singles.
ReplyDeleteWhere is Rossouw? He has been running his mouth all season and his team gets smoked in the playoffs and he dissappears! Losing 5-0 to BH????? Overall 1-2???
ReplyDeleteEpic Fail of the Week!!
Other Epic Fails!
ReplyDeleteJerry Defeo 0-3 this weekend!
Wiley/Clark lose to Leopard/Moore??
Huffines 0-2 and only win 3 lines!
Congrats to HP.
ReplyDeleteAll of the teams seemed to be pretty evenly matched. The tiebreaks didn't fall our way this time. Good tennis and good people all the way around.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I have "run my mouth" at any stage during the season about my team or their chances? I have been very cautious to not discuss my team at all. Also, I spend more time on the facebook page now where we know who is writing the comments rather than deal with cowards like you who make baseless accusations and don't have the guts to back it up with their name.
However, I will echo the post I made on facebook that Bartlett's team played great all season and deserved to win. Yes, they pasted us on Saturday night. They were/ are the better team and then went on to win against Garland. Well done Brad & team. (for the record also, I play at Bhaven with Bartlett and Co often and have never found Brad to be "abrasive" or inappropriate in anyway. They are all stand up guys and it was a pleasure getting to know guys like Bobby Smith & Bill Mattes a little better this weened. Cool guys. Phil Lazzarra also seemed to be a classy guy so I doubt he posted the comments attributed above).
Congrats to all the winners and participants yesterday. I particularly tip my hat to Oak Creek 3.5. You guys really came to play. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteJerry Defeo is a great player - he lost close singles matches against Guzman and Fankhauser, two of the best 4.0 singles players in the city - anyone who watched some of those matches knows it was not an epic failure on his part, he played well in both and his team still won both of those matchups. Prior to the playoffs, Fankhauser was undefeated at 4.0 and Guzman had only lost once. All three will be in 4.5 next season, it will be interesting to see if they can still be successful at that level. Good luck guys
ReplyDeleteIs BH automatically qualified for the playoffs for the Spring?
ReplyDeleteGreenhill lost 5 - 0 to Brookhaven. 4 of those matches were decided by third set tiebreak or one total break in the match (sometimes a lot of tiebreaks can go in your favor or not right Sisk). The scoreboard shows 5 0 but the scores were very close. Obviously Brookhaven was very good; but I wouldn't call that loss an epic fail either (much like that of Defeo).
ReplyDeleteDefeo is great but 0-3 is epic fail and losing 5-0 is epic fail!
ReplyDeleteHow many folks were tanking out there this weekend for hopes of 2011 ratings? A
ReplyDeleteWho is the favorite for the Tri Level?
ReplyDeleteThis weekend could be viewed as a good opportunity to tank since many of the teams competing did not retain enough players to get the free pass in the spring anyway. None that I know of though.
ReplyDeletewhat is the point of word verification? What is it supposed to stop?
ReplyDeleteCome on...Tank a year in advance? that's just moronic to even suggest something like that. People want to win, not manage ratings, Especially the play-offs.
ReplyDeleteSome of the problem could be that there was over a month since some of these guys played a match. That would be a great equalizer for the less talented. I wonder if there might be a few less upsets had this been played one week after the regular season. If the better players were not playing much in the layoff and the players that should not have won were playing, it could explain some losses.
ReplyDeleteInteresting theory, which match do you consider an upset in which a clearly better player lost a match?
ReplyDeleteNot sure as much upsets but Defeo going 0-3 is strange. I don't know anything about the other guys but Defeo has beat alot of players and then to go 0-3 is an epic fail.
ReplyDeleteguys i see some comments you all don't and the word verification is stop spam hacking, it was really bad on posting in the past and finally they were able to get into a current thread and I just don't want you all to have to sift thru junk like that.
ReplyDeletebtw if u are a registred user it shouldn't ask you for word verif.
ReplyDeleteI get your point, just don't think it's fair to call it an epic fail to lose playoff matches, unless you're losing to guys you should be expected to beat. Based on the records of the two guys he lost to (who I don't know either), I don't know how you could expect anything other than a close match - which both of them were, based on the scores. As for his doubles match, wasn't it a 3rd set tiebreak? Win some, lose some on those, hard to blame him for that loss.
ReplyDeleteI have been able to see most of the singles players in the 4.0 play-offs this weekend previously or this weekend with the exception of Montagard (Garland)and vanovershelde (Oak Creek).
ReplyDeleteI can confidently say that the 3 best singles players from what I saw were:
1. Pablo Guzman
2. Matt Fankhauser
3. Jerry Defeo
Jerry got tough match-ups and I was surprised that John didn't play him at singles in the final but I'm sure he had his reasons and more information than me.
I saw Guzman play Buford in November and man that guy is really, really good. I saw Matt play Defeo this weekend and they produced some really good tennis. He also twice played against 2 of the Greenhill guys.
As well as my good friend Chris Ellis played yesterday and also Zack, Andy Mac and Don Buford (yes I watched those matches) the 3 listed above are clearly better singles players.
So I agree, Jerry Defeo does not fall into the category of "Epic Fail". While in the NFL your record tells you what kind of team you are because on any given sunday any team can beat any other... that is not the case in tennis. Match-ups play a big role.... so do styles. If a captain plays his best players against stronger teams on the top lines they will have tougher matches. However, a smart captain plays his weaker players on lower lines and against weaker teams. My point is: you can't just look at the results on tennislink to see how good or bad a player is.
(and Cary, I am logged in but still have to do word verification?)
I would have to say, no matter what, it is the final results that matter. there is no barely lost in the record book. Especially since Defeo would be considered a lock by many on paper.

ReplyDeleterussuws gh team was overhype
ReplyDeleteGood captains are unpredictable and the top captains line 3 can beat all other teams lines 1. There are very few good captains and even fewer top captains.
ReplyDeleteFree agency begins! Both Greenhill and the Lakes captains got bumped to 4.5! Do both teams break up? Does Sisk and Somabut recruit from both teams? Who are the top free agents out there? Let the discussion begin!
ReplyDeleteTri Level question > which team has the best 4.5s? Bender or Feldman?
ReplyDeleteI would have to say the duo of Kiron/Slezak would have the edge over Durten/Feldman. Probably would come down to a 3rd set TB.
ReplyDeleteHow about a something on the Cotton Bowl
ReplyDelete
